Gaming General Discusison

you could always go for the other thing >u>

To be honest, I'm considering downloading Smite, only hoping if they fixed the update thing that I've heard of

It was time to uninstall that years ago.

Hard to do that when you've been a player since 2007 D:

I guess you don't hate League as much as I do.

Played a bit. Felt it was too easy. Then I quit

I only hate the kids on the community. I'm like "gl/hf" and they're like "report you for being positive"

:PUN: I revel in being positive.

I always thank my Jungler, I compliment my marksman, and I wish everyone good luck and fun.

I am so bad!

I uninstalled LoL and Dota 2 the moment I realized that point and click hitscan combat would always be worthless to me.

Not that they're bad games (for anyone who likes them), but I just can't stand that kind of combat.

I want some tips on "must have" 3DS games for future shopping.

I acctually only have "Zelda: ALBW", "Pokémon Y" and "Fire Emblem: Awakening" to my 3DS (acctually, 2DS) unit!
My wallet had/have a though time in some monthes now becous of my car (been forced to do long distant travels in a while and doing freaking car reperations lately + buying new tires) soo I havn't been able to buy games in a long time.
But now I did have some money left and acctually ordered "Kid Icarus: Uprising" recently, and I have been looking forward to play it in MONTHES. And soon I will be able to build up my money pile.

I have target "Pokémon OR/AS" next month and maby planned to get the newest "Super smash bros" and "luigi's mansion 2". But then I don't really know what title I should target next!

GoG.com is going to launch Galaxy, and they are giving away Alien Vs. Predator to the ones who subscribe to the beta until October 17th on morning. I just signed up and I'm waiting for the CD-Key. Galaxy seems interesting

Hello! I'm streaming NES Battletoads at http://www.hitbox.tv/drewski just for funsies.
I am really bad (actually bad, not just humbly bad), don't expect to see a cool-ass speedrun. More like some dude who can barely get past level 3.

edit: more like fumbling to get the stream to work

I gave up on that game rather quickly. And I've beaten a lot of very hard NES games like Ninja Gaiden and TMNT.

The other person was me and I wasn't laughing so much as wincing at a your pain in navigating a level designed by Joseph Goebbels.

I feel the same way. I think Battletoads is almost a good game, but IMO it's just poorly designed in a lot of ways (obviously including difficulty, telegraphing, etc. but also other non difficulty related issues too) that drag it down and make it not worth struggling through.

2 players Battletoads makes 1 player Battletoads look like Kirby's Adventure though. I remember struggling through that with a friend using a stage select code. Good times.

For connoisseurs of stupidly hard nes games, I actually have to recommend Holy Diver as a game that's insanely ridiculously hard (beyond anything else I can think of on the platform), but is actually kinda sorta good. Plus the back story is all about "knights of magic justice" and all the character names are heavy metal references.

I actually think Battletoads has some of the better design among hard NES games, aside from the limited continue system (which is the only thing I feel that warrants actual frustration), but emulators fix that problem. :) Like... it's difficult and cheap, but it's never really tedious or boring either.

The only real issue I have is that it places too much emphasis on memorization+execution rather than reaction+execution (Mario 3) or planning+execution (Castlevania). The game was clearly rushed in some areas (collision detection on some enemies and platforms is just awful) and the bosses suck, but I still think it gets more flak than it deserves.

I'll give that Holy Diver game a try.

What would Ninja Gaiden fall under? As abusing the boomerang shuriken is pretty much how I beat it.

I've never really played past the first or second level in that game, but that sounds like planning to me.

EDIT: I should also really note that I don't mean to imply that an entire game can be boiled down into one design principle (even though that is totally what I did in that last post). I just shortened it for brevity's sake.

Nothing in Ninja Gaiden is really cheap until the very last stage, or possibly even just the last boss. Jaquio's fire balls + deleted checkpoints are pretty much the main reason people think that game is so hard.

That being said, said fire balls are very random IIRC so you can't really memorize it. It's pretty much a reaction thing.

Jaquio is a pushover if you use the fire blossom, however the stage before him is a bitch to navigate without the boomerang shuriken. Choices...

Thankfully the bosses that book end him can both be put down with the sword alone.

Problem is that the game actually cheats and takes away your sub weapon once you kill the Masked Demon lol (had to look that up to remember why I didn't do that in the first place). You can skip the Masked Demon the second time, but that still means replaying the stage again and losing a chance at a 1 life clear. A friend of mine has a 1 life clear of the game on Youtube, and the Jaquio battle was pretty rough lol.

My no-miss clear was done long before the days when Youtube existed.

Oh you no missed it? That's pretty great. I should probably go back on that game and try to play it more "seriously" some time. Bil vouches that it's actually pretty great when mastered like that.

Will have to wait though, right now I'm on a Contra binge. Currently trying to 1 life clear Hard Corps.

It was a genius stroke of amazing luck and perseverance that I expect I'll never be able to repeat.

On one hand, I'm happy that JonTron is giving exposure to my favorite horror game (Clock Tower). On the other hand, he spoiled like... EVERYTHING in his video. :(

If you've never played it then I highly recommend you grab a SNES rom, translation patch, a walkthrough (try a blind run first but trust me: it's dang cryptic) and get in the Halloween spirit. I adore that game and think it gives Super Metroid a run for its money in terms of 16-bit atmosphere.

I finaly finished Fallout Tactics. Only took a month or soo for me to finish it from start to end :P

Speaking of 1 life clears, I got a no death/no damage/1 life clear of Contra Hard Corps (I made a thread for gaming achievements but I don't feel like bumping that right now, heh)

I also added strategy guide/commentary via annotations. I recommend turning them off if you just want to see the game, since the presentation is really great.

Youtube description:

Hard Corps, roll out!

Annotation commentary once again! This game has a GREAT presentation though so be sure to turn it off if you're just here to get a look at the game.

I've found myself liking this game a lot more lately. Personally I still think Contra 3 is a more challenging and well designed game, but Hard Corps is still massive fun. It could use a bit more level/boss design polish and some better balancing on the characters and weapons, but that doesn't stop it from being an experience full of manic fun and excitement.

I've also grown to really love the aesthetic in this game as well. Its dissonant mix of quirky humor and bio/cyberpunk menace lends it a uniquely engrossing and vibrant atmosphere quite unlike the rest of the franchise. The character designs were handled by anime/manga artist Yasuomi Umetsu, and the music was created by a dream team featuring Michiru Yamane (Castlevania) and Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill) among other high profile video game musicians.

One of the games big gimmicks is that it has a number of player characters and a few branching paths for stages. I'm playing as Sheena because she has some nice aggressive strategies that make her a bit more interesting to play than Ray, without being quite as over powered as Brad or Brownie. I went with the Super Bahamut route (rescue research center, then don't fight the doctor) because the end bosses there are some of the most random and reflex driven.

This is also not a very heavily practiced or researched run, I belted this one out in about 3-5 serious attempts (read: not dickering about and resetting on the first stage) after 1 credit clearing it (which didn't take more than a play session or two of casual credits). There's probably a lot better speed kill strats, but I'm not exactly trying for a speed run here.

Anyway play it if you haven't already. It's Contra! And if you don't like Contra, you're a terrible person.

If you've never played this game, play it. It is SO good. Definitely one of the hidden jems of the PS3s earlier days.

SEGA HATE GAIJIN!

Heheh, that reminds me, I recently was struck by the glitch in PSO2 that prevents English players from connecting to the servers. At first I wasn't able to connect to the proxy server, but managed to get around it by trying again on one of my computers alternate partitions. Must've been a ninja fire wall or something (I know we talked about this in the PSO2 thread. I'd recommend giving it a try on a different partition or something too, if you're still interested in the game).
