Even at this late hour on Christmas day, news continues to trickle in. Peter Bartholow of Lab Zero Games recently took to NeoGaf to answer a few questions about Skullgirls' future, including the impending PlayStation 4/Vita launches and upcoming DLC character Robo-Fortune.

Peter said:
  • When's Beowulf hitting?
We wanted to have him out by the end of the year, but hit some snags. Mostly with story mode and stage music.

  • When's Robo-Fortune going to be released?
Robo-Fortune will probably hit with the PS4/Vita release. Her actual character is pretty far along, so it'll be mostly down to stage / story mode. Because that version will need another round of testing, etc. we can afford to split them now.

  • What about the PS4 version?
We're hoping by the end of Q1 for PS4/Vita release. They'll be simultaneous.

  • Will there be crossbuy for the PS4/Vita versions?
Not ready to talk pricing on the PS4/Vita versions yet, crossbuy, etc. Still not fully decided, but we have a direction we want to go. It's pretty safe to say that it will not be free for existing PS3 owners, though - we're spending a lot of money on the upgrades and additions and we can't just give that away.

  • Will the PS4 version be at a higher resolution than the PS3 version?
It'll be native 1080p, but the assets likely won't be upscaled - too much increase in file size / loading times for no noticeable benefit.

Robo-Fortune has been worked on in semi-secrecy for the last several months across both Eliza and Beowulf's development, and little more is known about her beyond an assortment of wild concept art, a "detonation mode" gameplay concept that lead designer Mike Z enthusiastically discussed at Salty Cupcakes last year, and several leaked placeholder palettes found in the game files. Beyond these tidbits, fans will have to wait until 2015 for more info.

As mentioned above, Skullgirls Encore releases early 2015 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. To read more about the upcoming releases, click here.

Oh, and happy holidays!
(Thanks for the tip, @Zazz!)

Oh my.....cant wait for beowulf to be finish. And Robo F. XD

Convenient SG on-the-go during my constant airplane trips sweet.

Would SG Vita/PS4 themes be possible? Thought I ask since technically not about the game itself.

Great news! I really hope that new version will sell well, it's about time Skullgirls takes it's place among the best! EVO will have no choice but let you in now!

Happy holidays to everyone out there! And thanks to all the team for all the great works you did so far! You definitely go beyond the call of duty since the very beginning and it's really appreciated!

Fingers crossed for PS+. It would be totally sweet to have every PS+ owner download it! F'ing ginormous population increase :D

Yeah, but if it's PS+, they won't get a single penny from it, unless there's something i don't know about how PS+ deal works for publishers...

The old version sold really well, so I'm not too worried. Didn't they sell their life time expected copies in a week or something?
Fingers crossed for PS+.
It's funny, I'm now imagining a person who got the PS3 version for free through PS+ waiting for the PS4 version to hit the free period.

I just hope that the team finally start to rake in some money from the game. I remember that recently they finally started making money from game sales, so I hope the PSV and PS4 make them a good profit. They really deserve it.

Well, they wouldn't have to wait long to find out. The PS4 PS+ games, especially the, "indies," have almost always been new games. If SG were ever going to be on PS+ on PS4, I imagine it'd be at launch.

By the end of the year? We don't even have voices for him in the beta yet and L0 are probably on holiday. Didn't BB miss expectations by a long shot too? I forget.

Well Beowulf already did the missing expectations thing- they said he won't be ready by the end of the year.
And from the sound of it music and story mode are his main problems, which might mean they've made some progress as far as voice acting if they're not considering it a problem.
I don't think any character will run into the delays that Big Band did

End of 2014 was their orginal estimate, which they've long-since revised based on:

Bruh... why you bringing up delays? This is Skullgirls. We coined the term "Two Weeks". I'm personally expecting PS4 Q2 2015, and if it gets delayed to Q2 I'll expect it Q3. Not cause I don't trust them, but cause I know the ride from "done" to "published" can be bumpy.

They certainly get money from it, otherwise no sane publisher would ever allow a game to be put on PS+.

Sony negotiates a deal with each dev, but some form of compensation is normally included. For larger games, it's flat fee to the publisher, but I know that some super small indie game have taken little or nothing, banking on the hope that the much higher exposure will translate into DLC sales (Velocity 2X, for example). Devs aren't supposed to talk about their deal, but they give plenty of hints as to the way the system works.

If I had to try and guess at a possible rationale behind making Skullgirls a PS4 PS+ game, I'd say it's to build interest for SG2, whether that be to sell the IP or make a new game. Those two options are the only way Skullgirls can continue after the IGG characters are done, so while I am talking out of my ass with a complete guess, I think it's a reasonable guess.

PS4/Vita SG Encore Complete will have all characters.

I know Sony foot the bill for the Complete Edition ports but I would be super surprised if it launched as a PS+ Instant Game Collection title. Wouldn't be surprised if it did several months later.

That's a good thing then. I thought that maybe games got free on PS+ so that people would then buy the DLC and/or the sequel of games they wouldn't have bought in the first place.

Are they? I thought it was Autumn.

Any chance we could see something of the Robo-Fortune's progress?

Beowulf is a pro wrestler, and therefore doesn't like sharing the spotlight with anybody under any circumstances. My guess is that he'll continue hogging the limelight until his release, then it'll be time for everyone's favorite exploding kittybot to step in and shine.

I think they're going to surprise us with Robo-Fortune, she'll definitely be more done than any other character when she hits beta.
I theorize she might launch in Beta nearly completed on April 1st (like her fellow joke character Fukua) and after she's been played and balanced they'll add her story mode (also like Fukua)
But what do I know?

  5. Aigis (Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series)
  6. T-elos (Xenosaga series)

I'll go out on a limb and say to not get too used to any of these palettes. Everything is subject to change + Lab Zero never wanted these to get leaked.

I thought some palettes, like the Aigis one, were actually shown at some convention by the staff.

Some (can't remember which) palette ideas were indeed shown during the Robo-Fortune reveal panel. Still, there might be some additional selection among those, and even if a palette was both in considered ones and then in the game files, it might be dropped by the time the character enters beta in favour of other ideas. Best to be cautious with having our hopes up + not take anything for granted just yet.

It would be a shame if some of those palettes got scrapped just to spite the leakers.

I doubt L0 would do something like that, but still.

Yeah, L0 ain't Capcom or Bando Namcai.

Still feel gutted about both Darkstalkers Resurrection "not selling enough for DS4 to ever happen" and the whole Lucky Chloe incident

I'd like to remind you (and everyone else here) that Mike referred to the leaked R. Fortune palettes as months-old placeholders. None of them are guaranteed to stay, and we technically weren't even supposed to see them yet.

I'm fairly certain that Lucky Chloe is still coming to America

Yeah, Lucky Chloe is coming, i think they just feels like bitching that day, to answer the american bitching of Chloe in the first place. As for DS4, well i don't think they even had the intention to do it in the first place. They just mention 'Darkstalker is not dead' sometime in order to keep these fans in check so that the reprint will sell more and that they will keep buying streetfighter in the meantime. Heck, it's exactly what they did with megaman once : for an anniversary, they suddenly sponsored one of the fan game. Instead of sponsoring one of the best(there were many that year!), they choose an ok one (megaman vs streetfighter) only because street fighter was featured in it.

So, yeah, don't count on capcom to resurrect darkstalkers. And even if they do, it would be in 3D(which goes against the very principle of the serie in the first place) and done in an average way at best.

I'm impressed, how can you guys keep pulling out all this stuff? I'm usually worried sometimes that you guys might not make it at one point.

Could anyone please clarify this part for me, I don't get it? What does "assets likely won't be upscaled" mean, since they have original assets with bigger size why would they upscale current ones, and how could they get "native 1080p" with current assets?
