Hypothetical Filia talk: your thoughts on six Ringlet Spike distances?

Sorry if this has been discussed before/is in the wrong section, I didn't think it belonged on the Filia board since it's not about actual gameplay. Before I start, here's a photo to use as bit of reference: our old pal Anakaris from the Darkstalkers series (Vampire Saviour in this example).
His "Sarcophagus Drop" special has six distances the player can use, as shown in the photo above. The Jab, Short, Strong, Forward, Fierce, and Roundhouse buttons give you these attack distance options when the move is used (for consistency's sake, they were all done while backed up at the edge of the screen). The kick button is always a bit further ahead than the punch button of the same strength.

Now, what I've been thinking of for a while (I was going to bring this up right before Skullheart fell down a well) is this: how would Filia play if she had these options? Instead of three spots to pop a Ringlet Spike out of the floor, she now has six in a similar formation to what Anakaris uses in the photo above. Adjustments are probably needed, of course [edit: actually nope, as seen below in the photo] .

An example of what I mean - (shown from 2P side only due to the video I grabbed stills from using it). The transparent Spikes are the existing positions, and the red ones are new, labels included for clarity on which button would do what.

I'm not a pro player by any means, and also this isn't a case of somebody saying "the character should have this!", but more of a question to those most familiar with playing Filia, either solo or in a team where she isn't just an Updo assist. Would she benefit from having six Ringlet positions to choose from? Would it not change her game too much? Would it be a useless addition, or would it even make her too powerful?

Even though I'm not all that great using Filia, I can see that her Ringlets have three useful positions already. Well, I actually don't see much of Strong. Jab Ringlet after a throw in the corner is what I see most on Salty Cupcakes/etc. streams, and Fierce is pretty much the perfect distance to hit a thrown opponent when your back is to the corner and they've got a decent distance to fly back. Mostly it's Jab in the corner though. Part of me thinks, "this would be useful and could give her more control and spacing options, and maybe see more use out of the move overall", but then another part of me thinks, "wait, this could wind up giving her too many control and spacing options...". What do you think?

[I haven't played the PC version yet, so I almost forgot the "fake Ringlet Spike" she got a while back - if that's still in the game, then you can also base your answers using that if you like, one fake and five attack positions.]

Heh you know honestly I could have a lot of fun with that kinda set up, heh maybe someday when the games practically done they might make EX versions of the characters who fight with augmented versions of the fighting styles we know so maybe she might get that function later? Or if were lucky they might add that later, but I get vibes people are happy with things as they are now, but who knows ya know?

It would definitely be cool and, as a 1/3 Filia player myself, I think it'd definitely give the move more uses outside of rare surprise attacks and corner combo extensions, but it would be a tad odd to give a rush down character a good zoning tool. Can't know with any good amount of certainty unless it was tested though.

Lunerstep - Hmm, never thought of EX versions of the cast; that might be something they'd possibly consider after Robo-Fortune (if it didn't cost a whole heck of a lot, anyway).

DARKNESSxEAGLE - You're right, the new farthest Spike distance I put in the photo (HK) would probably turn out to be a better zoning tool than she should have. It'd maybe be for the best to leave the punch button Spikes where they are, then slip the two in between them and leave one button as the Fake Spike? I could see new combos blossoming from those with the right assists.

At that point, I'd rather just see Ringlet track as if Peacock's 3 item drops.

  6. Alternatively the extra distances could go on QCF+Punch(hold) Like Warachia's tornado's from MB.

holy moly that would be a little much.

i like the idea of the 6 fixed distances though, not sure if filia needs more tools but its cool in theory

dama624 - like GirlyStyle, I also think tracking would make the move a bit too good for something that comes out so fast. Something like, say, Blackheart's HP Inferno can get away with tracking in the Marvel games, because it's way slower to come out than the Ringlets. If the move had different strengths based on how long it was held (small, weak Spike for tapping the button, large, damaging Spike for holding it down a considerable time), then tracking might work, but with Peacock, she's mobile while charging, and Filia'd be stuck in one spot. Either the move would have to change a lot to balance the new ability, or it'd just wind up being far too powerful.

Jet Set Dizzy - Hm, I wasn't aware Warachia could do that (never played MB, just watched it), it seems like a viable solution too. Only problem that arises is the HP distance would probably have to be ignored to keep the move from being too good of a zoning tool, or have its tap-the-button distance shortened so that the hold-for-distance reach on the screen was the same as it is now. If it works in something fast like MB, then my other worry of players getting one distance when they meant to use another during hectic play shouldn't be an issue at all in Skullgirls.

  10. It works fine in MB. Wara only has four distances since C moves are EX, but his tornados are also much wider.

Seeing how current Ringlet eats projectiles and is a good counter vs obvious projectile patterns when paired with the cancel into Gregor, I'm going to say no. Unless every character is gaining something, in which case Peacock should have a Potemkin George that tanks three hits and Bella should have Heat Knuckle so mid-screen Excellebella is good for something.

View619 - Good points about current Ringlet uses, although this shouldn't really be a matter of "if somebody gets a change, they'd better all get changes" when discussing one change to a character. To be fair, other characters have already gained new moves/gotten drastic changes made to them though the course of the game, especially during the beta period, where others have been left out/given much more minor changes. Fortune's got her new head-attached HK, Painwheel's Pinion Dash special got upgraded to a level 3 super, Double's old dash became a special and she got her normal dashes replaced by I think Squiggly+Parasoul's (this may or may not still be in the game, can't remember any mention of its removal since the Salty where it was announced), and Cerebella had Pummelhorse as an assist for about a week until it was deemed too broken and removed. Some stuck around, others got booted.

This looks sorta funny but the last thing Filia needs is buffs, so it's kinda moot.

Filias like guile, she's got all she needs, so just because she hasn't received any super major upgrades she doesn't need them.

Also, she got 3 hit updo on point to the above poster, so she has gotten some stuff.

The point I'm making is that while useful, Filia does not need a better Ringlet. It has its uses which work really well for a character who should be about getting up in your face and not about competing with you at long range. It's not something she actually needs to make Ringlet more useful and if we're going to give her this, we may as well boost the moves of other characters which have good use but could be made better with a similar buff, like Heat Knuckle Excebella.

I thought she was already considered amongst the best in the game? I don't think she needs a boost to her zoning, she shouldn't excel at everything.

lol she does not need that. She is already top tier. Plus you would lose the fake one which is really good for mind games and tricksies.

Well, firstly, she'll loose Ringlet Psyche, which is pretty useful all around. And yeah, Filia doesn't really need help with her zoning considering how good she is already. While I think adding the three extra versions will make Ringlet Spike much more useful, increasing the range on it like in your example would be really strong.
