Hello forums I come humbly today for some help. I play solo Valentine and I have around 200 hours so far. I know the basic stuff like when it's my turn to hit buttons, pushblocking, resets, throw teching etc..

I have one problem. I can't get in on people. As soon as the match start they ALWAYS run away and I'm left to chase after them. Sometimes I get bored and throw shurikens all day but I don't like that. If I try to dash in from above they just either jump back and hit a button and win or anti air me.. mostly the former. If I try to run in and hit a tick throw or something they just slap me with a long range normal. (or Big Band assist) After my futile attempts to hit them, they use an assist that keeps me still in one place while they freely get to walk up to me and do as they please.

Everyone I talk to says how Valentine has good neutral but I don't see it. So how exactly do I play against these people that run away all game and hit assists? btw outlaw_spike is my idol

throw shurikens and keep distance until opponent gets impatient and starts mashing buttons, then do bypass i guess when these attacks dont hit you and they're in recovery?
or you can try to keep distance and do neutral stuff like j.hp and if it hits just..bypass into combo into reset

Have you considered picking up a second character for an assist? While solo Val is viable (as Outlaw has shown), she does benefit from assists a lot. A horizontal (lockdown) assist (e.g. Bomber, Brass, Butchers, H LnL, etc) may help you get that initial hit/blocked attack you need. Other than that, watching other Vals (e.g. Cloud, Duckator, Outlaw, etc) may help you get a better idea of her neutral even if most of them use assists.

Val's dead crosses are pretty important, and even more so if you're going to stick with solo. I use it to get my opponent blocking, giving me more control. I also try to use it to establish a pattern, so then I can break that pattern and hopefully catch my opponent off guard. Most of that is done with running away and dead corssing. But if that isn't appealing, you might want to consider adding someone else, like Lex said.

When you're chasing someone down who is upbacking, Val's airthrow is a real good option. Other advice I'd offer is trying to stay above your opponent and to change up your timing when you come down with normals. Dead cross also changes how you fall, which can mess with timing. And if you're finding that you're getting anti-aired a lot as you're coming down, adding in an empty jump or just blocking after a dead cross can help.

Don't think I'm the best at explaining things, but hope that helps. Good luck!
