I feel I needed to finally make a training diary because I've had the nastiest losing streak. I didn't even know what I was thinking trying to fight tjgamer. I can't even beat everyone in quick match. I feel like I'm getting worse than better. I'm slower than usual, I can't finish combos, and I could never combo off of pokes. I don't know if the opponents going to grab or not, everything's hard as hell to predict, and everyone uses dp assists.
One of the worst parts is me trying out these elaborate, original combos that are extremely inefficient, but everytime a better player does a crappy-looking combo they get perfect execution. It's very hard for me to fight zoning characters because of my rushdown attitude, even with PEACOCK!(although I've been trying out her zoning tools)
To be honest, I don't ever like using DP assist because of my hipster-like behavior and the thought of being original. I sometimes fell like crying(YES!!) because of how much I love this game, but I'm shitty at it and I've been playing for 9 months. Can I get some help please?

yo, if you wanna practice with me On PS3, i down with that. i will be home at around 8-ish cuz i have boxing today. i dont know if you got the request though... im not that good, but hey im in the same boat as you.

This would probably be a good time to take a break and breathe for a little bit.

sorry I couldn't play. I was shopping with my mom. I also forgot to mention my problem with the PS button. Everytime I'm gonna get a good combo in, QC motion ruins it all! How do I avoid this problem other than an expensive arcade stick.

You're having problems doing quarter circle motions, is that the question? If so, there is literally only ONE answer : practice. Spend a lot of time in training mode just grinding out your combos and shit until you get them consistently, everyone with good execution had to go through this to have good execution.

My QCs are great, but the PS button gets in the way.

Well, I'm switching to Stick myself, and one of the main reasons for it is because supers are hard to pull off, especially ones with the Dragon Punch. I also made a thread asking about what stick.I should get, so check it out.

The great thing about dp assists is that anybody can use them!

Add BronzeXephyr on steam if you wanna play sometimes, I'm not very good at tips but I can try if you need anything.

As for your troubles, not doing optimal combos or picking a more invincible reversal assist is going to make the game more complicated. This isn't to discourage you, because power to you for playing the game the way you want to play the game, that's more than some people can say, including myself. There are people who can make really odd assists and combinations work and that's a lot of what makes fighters so hype sometimes.

That's in terms of assists, but leaving damage on the table is never a good idea. Personally I would say if it's more than a ~1000 damage difference between your combos and the optimal ones that are common, you should probably look for some better options because you're leaving too much damage on the table to be competitive with some of the better players.

And as for quick-match...you're never going to win every quickmatch. SG is a smaller community, so you're gonna run into the guys who play a LOT and are simply better than you, since there is no real skill matchmaking, persay. I still get a beginner directly after some guy like SoupySwan or MastaCJ who has the ability to perfect me on command, so don't get too salty over quickmatches, is all I'm saying.

Follow everyone else's advice and above all, follow advice once given to me in a similar situation.

Keep playing.

Sometimes those plateaus feel much longer than evidenced in the graph. I feel like I've been treading water for at least 3 months now.

What do y'all think about players like me fighting people like mikez, cisco, tj, sonicfox, or anyone in Expert? I mean just to learn something and maybe win. Also, what do you think about online experimentation?

Make sure to play multiple matches with them (not just one or two), and ask them for advice while playing if you want to make it as worth your while as possible

I usually do -10, but me and cisco did -15 and recently I've been asking many people what i've been doing wrong.

Hey, if you got some time now and my internet feels like acting like a good person, i'll play you. I don't know what type of advice i can offer, but I can try.

i don't have skullgirls on steam. I'm waiting on the sequel but this may be unlikely.

Even if there was a guaranteed sequel it probably wouldn't even go into development until like...next year.

Do explain this logic.
since when does logic apply to Skullheart? have i missed something?

It just occurred to me what I'm most afraid of is losing my one OTG

What, like...changing to a combo that requires an OTG so you won't be able to use it later? Why is this an issue?

The problem with your team is that whenever you get the high/low unblockable with Filia assist and confirm it into painwheel you get incredibly scaled damage, that was one thing I picked up on, was that even though I was getting hit it was doing no damage.
Ummm other than that my team is a tough matchup for painwheel all around and you did a pretty good job of evading stuff with painwheel. A little too many raw tags.
Thanks Xephyr
My first tourney was shit! I lost twice. The first two times: ping was in the way. The others: I just had a bad strategy.
I've learned so much from these fight.

I just learned something awesome: Whenever you're trying to get a poke, just know that what ever part of the attackers' body is moving, that whole part has a hitbox, everything else has a hurtbox! Also, I've decided to quit quickmatch! I don't care about my score anymore, as long as I fight the single-digits!

I personally think MMDS is legitimately one of the best Skullgirls players ever. He has a strategy when I comes to playing Painwheel, and he's really awesome with Parasoul. His combos are very beautiful and his resets are effective. Although, I feel his best character will actually be is Fukua. Combos, resets, and trickery: he has all three when using Fukua.

I haven't played Skullgirls in 2 weeks because my mom punished me for no reason. However, I plan to get back on this Saturday, becoming better than before practicing the practical combos first, then reset options, and lastly, the impractical "hype" combos! I will find a way to beat those who are better than me very soon.

Also, if Duckator stops by, I won't be able to ever play scrubbyscum999, even if I wanted to, and I would if I weren't super poverty. On that note, it would be enticing to know if the Steam version of SG:E UBE(Unfinished Business Edition) can adjust the controls for me to have a PS3 controller.

Fasterlaned: I think the reason I get combo'd in the corner is because I back-dash instead of block. How should I fix that?
Duckator: Stop backdashing
Fasterlaned: I think it was Peacock I backdashed with too much, I want to play her but rushdown Peacock isn't easy at all, all the more reason to play her!
Fasterlaned: I still get tripped up on burst baits though and I can't perform them

awww <3

I have a stalker... *yay*

What if I wan't to improve my character's game by playing solo with someone of the same character. Say, I would like to be a better Painwheel, so I have a few general matches, then I see I'm beginning to lose, so I play a mirror solo with you or Elda Taluda, because you're both great with her? Would having solo matches to see what I'm doing wrong be a great idea?
@dekillsage

If you can figure out why your opponents do what they do, and why you're losing to them then yes.
Probably. I dunno

dude dont go chasing waterfalls this will take a loooong time to get used to if you are relatively new to fighting games.

I'm a little new to Skullgirls, but I sure learned FGC terminology pretty quickly! I feel like for over 6+ months, Skullgirls has taught me more about how to play fighting games than any other game ever, especially MvC3, my online experience there was awful I lost every fight, plus I didn't know about inputs at all.

In other News...
I was able to play Skullgirls these last few weekends and I feel like giving up so GODDAMN BAD...but I can't let Skullgirls be another fad game for me when I put my time and commitment into it. These weekends, I've been fighting people that were on Expert Mode because I could not find anyone in Beginner or Casual at all on Friday. I had this huge match with this one guy and I was awful, I won only one out of 20+ matches, then I fight this other guy who's using a really FUCKING ANNOYING Peacock(a great-ass Peacock but annoying for me) and I could barely touch him because I was constantly flying with Painwheel because I was desperate and upset.

This Sunday, I had a whole bunch of Quick Matches because I was very impatient. Every single Quick Match me and my opponent was evenly matched, but the problem was I was losing like crazy. I only one once today. So in all, I won 2 out of 30+ MATCHES.
What I want to know:
I'm always afraid to fight or get close because I'm afraid of the outcomes of my choices.

When I'm afraid I make shitty choices and inputs, like, for example, the Sunday fight, I block Parasoul's Sniper Scope and I'm right in proximity to beat her ass, but I fuck up and jump instead of running after her.

I feel I don't know enough about how to reset, especially with Painwheel, and I'm afraid to grab because I'm thinking I'll miss the opportunity and get grabbed or the other person will read my mind.

I make some of the most "hipster" choices in assists, so I need to find better assists and make better choices.

My combos are honest shit.

What did I actually learn:

Reseting on Big Band with Painwheel can be very righteous like I would use j.LK, MK, HP, then next rejump, I would use j.LK, MK, HK and I would hover right over Big Band to the opposite side. Great Reset!

@PKStoopKid I want to know you most honest, deadliest opinion on how I fight because I think I was total shit that time, so I want you most honest observation on our fight, and whether you think were pretty evenly matched.

Seeing as your still a beginner your gonna make beginner mistakes. First and foremost, imo, Painwheel is a difficult character to pick up esp for people who are either 1.new to fighters or 2. Still learning the basics of fighting game mechanics. She'll take time to learn so expect tons of frustration. A couple of things I noticed in our fight
.While I'm not sure if you knew, my patterns were repeating and we're not properly recognized or punished granted I was rushing with Filia using Big Ban's Brass Knuckle (H).

.Patients, it seemed to me you were more worried about hitting me than seeing what I would do. With all the rush down I was doing when you finally connected would you have continued the combo or have panicked not expecting to hit me

.Obeserving the situation would've helped, more or less for next time observe the situation and act accordingly don't play into my game make me play yours

I wouldn't say you were shit, the skill levels are different (which answers one of your questions) also I've been playing since day one and pretty much is all I play but even I have my opponents I can't beat such as *edit* Emuchu and I even faced Keninblack a couple days ago both whooped my arse

All and all my closing statements keep practicing You will get upset you will get frustrated you may even consider quitting or putting it down for a minute but whatever you do DON'T QUIT promise me that much. I've been in worse way worse matches ie no blocking fresh out the box new type matches and ive been in matches where i have to question if I'm tourney ready, you sir or miss (no discrimination here) have potential.

Shameless plug time
Check out my "article" in the beginner forum though it's rather outdated

I have an announcement of my pledge:
I have been attempting to learn the different tricks and every thing else in Skullgirls and I want to officially say that I will never-ever ask for nerfs or buffs ever! I will learn how to play this game an adjust to whatever I see that's new. I promise!

Damn, it's the first time I ever find someone on skullheart saying that.
