Introduction to PW (a guide)

Pbgc thresher is obvious...

Pbgc deathcrawl is the sexiness as well. Raw reversal deathcrawl... Not so much.

PBGC Thresher is super solid vs just about any lockdown that you get stuck in (Copter and Fiber Upper come directly to mind) as there is usually a reason they have you locked down ie they are likely jumping in on you.

I like DC too, but I find it to be a tiny bit more niche.

Also PBGC into fly can be super solid, but I don't use it nearly enough.

And I'm definitely trying Caio's suggestion to see how often that works out for me.

taluda does it all the time if you wanna see it

When? I've seen him play but i don't think i ever recognized it if i did see it since I'm only just now aware of it.

Yeah i pushblock into fly sometimes... But i dont think i pbgc into fly much... That generally means that I'm canceling into fly in situations where i would be in need of more immediate invincible frames.

Weird question:

Would it be possible to pushblock into fly into unfly into block which would in theory net us the faster blockstun recovery with the recent discovery/change?

Yes of course, but you would still have your 10 vulnerable frames of fly startup.

Ahh... right, right.

Leaving us with the unfly predicament... there's still better shit to do after getting into fly than putting yourself back into blockstun.

One interesting thing about unfly is using it to lower pw in the air and then do an air attack... Rather than just flying downwards and then doing an attack.

Jumpsquat?

Typically a PBGC Thresher works like this.

Get caught jumping back by copter assist. Get put in block stun. Opponent jumps in. PBGC Thresher. Hits assist who leaves and catches point who is jumping in. Cancel into combo. Profit.

You can also use it for baited assist calls (chickenblock a fiber upper that you know is being called) or multi-hit jump normals (can't think of a specific example off hand... maybe PWs own j.mp?).

He means prejump, jumpsquat is the smash community term for prejump.

PBGC Thresher is mostly used when air blocking, I believe, from where it is actually a fantastic option.

Ah ok, thanks! Somehow, I completely forgot that PBGC could also apply to air push-blocking. Yeah, I'm primarily a Smash player so I end up using a bunch of Smash terms, like 0-to-death and jumpsquat, in other FGs. >_< Theoretically, since HI has invuln start-up and no lag, couldn't that also be used as a successful grounded PBGC?

It actually does have some recovery, not none. If you do it raw and they pushed a button you might get hit, PBGC Hatred Install DHC out is legit though.

It is what it is.

Goal with this guide:
It is pretty bare bones and is designed more for someone that is completely new to Painwheel. I wanted it to be kind of an all-in-one, get up and running type of guide. This won't benefit a lot of you.

Help:
Keep an eye out for things I say that are unclear, dumb, or just plain wrong. I'd like to get it as accurate as possible.

General notes:
Nothing is really optimized. That's what SH, Krackatoa vids, etc. are for. I chose the easiest route I could, when possible... not the best route. Among good Painwheels, there will be disagreement on some of what I say (I already got some). I couldn't alter the video too much without a full recording and delaying it for even longer which I didn't want to do.

With that said, in the future I'd like to get some one-on-one vids going. I'd like to flesh out some tech if someone else doesn't get to it first (there has been some interest shown by other people). And I think that's about it. In any case, hopefully this is the just the start (and the largest) of my hoping to contribute something to aspiring Painwheels.

All comments and criticism are welcome, but keep it constructive.

That green text is really hard to read. Try red or something else.

I'll mess around with it.

I had it as black but that was even harder to read.

I couldn't find shit that was great.

white with black outline is always readable

Thanks Caio, that looks great.

Related, is there a way to upload a new edited video to youtube in place of the this one? Or do I just have to upload the new one fresh and delete this video?

Fully charged sweep is better to combo into fly f+mk otg rather than buer. There were lots of small things, but in general i think the beginners guide here is really good, and makes way for a more advanced guide done by whoever, in the same spirit.

The advanced guide would be more of the same except more in depth with movement, assists, hit and hurtboxes, superjump applicability etc.

Yeah you can't really replace the video. Just delete the current one and reupload the new one.

As a person who knows nothing about painwheel but wants to learn some things, I'll post my thoughts about it when I go through this.

I have the easier-to-read video uploading while I'm at work. Should be 100% done by tonight.

Alright, went through it, and I split up my critiques depending on how much work you want to keep putting into it at this point. Sorry if I get a bit picky, it's kind of a thing I have to do normally.

Easy Fixes:
-Raw cut of the Apology. As a new viewer I didn't have an context about it and it went on for quite a bit longer than it should've I felt. It would work well to just be like "Hey, this is the Painwheel guide" and go into it, saving apologies for the description if necessary unless they were very very necessary (which I'm not sure it was)

-Move Elki Dori's comment to later on in the Fly cancel segment. Putting it at the beginning of the segment was pretty confusing, so I think it needs to be put in a different place or just stick it near the end.

-Green Text was still present at 45:13 and 50:26, and I have no idea what they said since they were really hard to read.

-There was like a 15-20 second delay at 51:47 where you weren't saying anything which felt like a long time, you could probably just do a simple cut ahead which you already seemed to do in earlier times of the video.
--------------------

Harder Fixes if you want to put in more effort:

- Cut some time off of the Jab Section. This section was really awkward because it felt like you were saying the whole time "yeah these aren't great" and it felt a little mundane and repetitive as if you were stammering. I don't think that means you have to re-record the segment or anything, but maybe just cut out to the direct bits of information or something. Of everything in the video, this felt the most weird.

- Showing examples. This is kind of a big thing to request, but I think it will help a lot, is if you "show" more of what you mean in a lot of the descriptions for moves that you did. It helps break up the monotony of the video as well as help explain a lot of things clearer. For example, when you went over supers, you talked about how vulnerable deathcrawl was then talked about mashing the air thresher, this is a segment that could've benefited to show an example to give an idea about how good each is at the situation since talking about it in the vacuum of nothing in the training room made it harder to convey the idea (at least, if I already didn't know what you meant form my own experience in general). Not all things need examples though, like the Nails section or the Hatred Guard section, but there are some parts that I do think would benefit from this. It would be more work, and require getting more footage and cutting it into the current guide in a good way, so I can understand if you don't want to do all that work, but I think it would help immensely and you wouldn't need to re-record your voice segments at all for this. I can go over this in more detail but those are my feelings.

-Show the combo notation in video. I know this is petty, since it's in the description, but it helps a lot I think to show the notation alongside the combo :'(

This covered everything I was curious about, so it's probably fine if you just want to go ahead with some of the Easy fixes there then let it loose.

Goddamnit...

So... I will probably fix this just because of the text color... which annoys me to no end. Were that not the case, I'd probably just leave it be. So... the next upload will be the last one... on my life... lord I'm annoyed about that color thing.

I'll see about some of the other stuff you mentioned. If it bothers me enough, I may shorten it up. I'm actually a tad busy this week which I hope accounts for the color lapse... or I'm going senile at the ripe old age of 30.

As far as the "harder fixes", I doubt I'll be able to implement either. It is a bit too much work for something that I want out in the world. I do plan smaller videos, so I'll certainly be able to expound in those.

This would be a lot less of an issue if I could just reupload the updated video to the same URL... do you hear me youtube?

Depending on how i feel i may make an addendum to this video... An "advanced" version. There will be no editing though and it would be poverty cam since i have no clue how capture cards work... But it would be informative.... I think.

@Dime_x

I think that's an awesome idea.

What video card do you have? If you have a compatible nvidia card, you can use shadowplay which is pretty fucking good. I just used Window's Movie Maker to edit.

I used armor a lot since I didn't know how to properly use fly. Try getting a feel for fly and her air normals. Learning how to combo with buer and fly is unavoidable.

Painwheel will never feel "fast". She has a slow dash, average walk speed, and no double jump/air dash.

With fly, she can feel quite mobile though.

Her combos are fairly easy, you just really need to get used to fly canceling.

You having specific trouble with her? She also has a few sexy buttons (mostly in the air). Get used to when to throw j.mp and when not to.

This is a really great painwheel guide it has help me step my game up a lot. I have improved my flight cancel and combo damage. thank you for the video

I'm glad it is helpful. There's a lot I dislike it, but I was too far in to make too many changes, and it was my first edited video which I think shows.

But I do hope it helps people pick her up as a (very) brief primer/intro.

@Spencer, can you add the video to the OP and change the thread title? I want to sticky this thread but right now the title and OP are misleading.

FYI as a mod you can change the title yourself. At the top of the page, Thread tools > edit thread.

I know, but I didn't wanna do it without telling the OP, so I thought I might just ask him instead.
