Hi everybody. So I've been here for a few days, and have been spending a lot of time with the game after buying it a couple weeks ago. This is my very first fighting game, and...I'll be honest, it's been a disheartening experience.

I've spent my childhood and adult years in the sim racing scene, so I understand that some types of games have unforgiving learning curves. I'll start chronicling my experiences here for now on. I play SG on PC. (My screen name is Beverly Hillbilly). So if anyone sees me, please hold back. I'm struggling right now, but I've gathered tools found throughout this forum and hope to learn understand this genre better

My best advice, is to find someone at a similar skill level to spar with as a friend. Learning a game with a friend is infinitely more fun then banging your head against a wall (AKA playing advanced/experienced players) :3

Don't worry, everyone starts out bad.
    EVERYONE.

If this is really your first fighting game, I 100% recommend completing the tutorial.
Then I recommend asking people questions!
    Then there's this playlist

    and this one
    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF3ZhfpbUOX19wryD4SD2rr5O_rZYsHag

And there are lots of nice people like Skarmand or Datagram who love to help new players!
    ....not me though. :^P

I'm not sure why, but I have chosen Valentine to start out with. It's nice that she is fast and agile, and she isn't useless in neutral situations. Right now, I'm understanding how to put together combos I want to pull off instead of button mashing.

I'm swearing off online play for now. Not because I'm rage quitting, but new people aren't learning anything when they get railed by someone time and time again. (Which I understand, I don't hold a grudge. Random people on the internet owe me nothing)

The tutorials aren't great, but they have been a great first step. And after a lot of digging here, I've discovered a lot about fighting games basics (101 type stuff) that I would have never figures out. And I have found a super awesome individual on Steam who has sat down with me and goes at my pace while still pushing me to improve.

I'm so close to completing the tutorials. There are a few on chapter 4 that I'm not even close to pulling off. I think it is a timing issue on my part. I've went back to the other tutorials and realized that I didn't REALLY understand what I was doing. I don't mind grinding to learn and improve

Maybe someone will call me dumb for this, but IMO the best first character is whichever you find the most interesting. You'll be more compelled to keep going and playing if you fundamentally like the playstyle of your chosen character and find them deeply engaging and cool, etc.

The one you find most interesting as a first character will be the one you build your team around eventually making your best first character your bestest first character. All the more motivating.

I don't quite have a feel for who most people prefer, but Valentine did seem the most interesting to me. And from the little I do know of the story, she only became more interesting. And who doesn't love a hot, psychotic nurse?

I also like Valentine because she is fast and appears to be fairly straight-forward when it comes to learning how to use her and become better with her.

If you wanna play solo Val I would recommend watching Outlaw Spike play and copy everything he does. I can't find anything recent from him but this is the least old thing I could find:

Wow. I find that gameplay really impressive. I was excited when I was able to pull off 15 hit combos (I still am). It wasn't easy to follow, but I could see some of what was going on. And I saw a couple things I could use to add to the combos I am able to do.

    Thanks for sharing this

More than the combos I'm always impressed at how Outlaw Spike will jump back, double jump back, throw dead cross, repeat until his opponent gets bored, does something stupid, and gets themselves killed. It's really effective. I'm not sure I've ever beaten him

I was inspired by that video to record some online play after going back to a few tutorials. The online matches went just about as I expected, but there was one that went really well. I'll post it here when it is finished with rendering and uploaded (and post it as a horror short lol)

Maybe watching myself play will help with spotting an issue or two

Your game isn't something that will be consistent. Especially at a low level it'll seemingly fluctuate.

When you feel like this drop the game and come back later or chill out in the training room. Online can be very frustrating and fighting games themselves are quite taxing.

I did put the game down and even stepped away from the computer. I didn't realize how easy it is to drop a few hours into SG. This morning, I watched the video I made yesterday and did see things that I am doing right.

I've seen that there is a thread on here somewhere going in depth about training rooms. Does anyone know where it's at?

First things first, take some time in training mode to learn a combo. It doesn't have to be optimal, but it should end with a super and you should never be able to drop it.

Problem is, the Val combo thread is messy and doesn't have any beginner combos.

    Try aiming for this:
    c.lk/c.lp, c.mk (1 hit), c.hp,
    j.hp xx savage bypass,
    EKG Flatliner

I'm already back in the training room. I had a couple combos I was trying to learn, but even something like an 8 button combo was too much for now. This looks like something I could practice with and get consistent. Thank you so much for the advice.

Even tho the ranked matches end up being totally one sided, most people back off quickly once it's obvious I'm outmatched. They will repeat a single combo or even just start jumping around, at least giving me a chance to attack.

I am getting the hang of how to use the training room, like slowing down the game and just turning the opponent completely off. I've been practicing a combo that someone posted here, and I was actually able to pull it off in a ranked match that was almost competitive.

I also want to say this again: thank you to everyone here for being so nice and helpful. Most people on the internet suck, so it's wonderful to find a community like this. It has helped me stay motivated to stay and improve.

After spending all day and evening, and half the night, I finally got the hang of this combo. I'm only completing it about half the time...but that's a start. (and I even did it in both directions once!)

This is the only "go-to" combo I have for now, but that's OK. I'd rather be able to do one combo great compared to half-assing three. I've figured out how to set up the training room to where I can get something out of it, and new friends have helped to show me big mistakes I've been making.

I would still say I'm awful at the game in general, but this is the first time I'm noticing an actual improvement.

That would be an awesome idea. I've gathered two things about Valentine:

    1. she isn't exactly a popular character because...
    2. She is far from the easiest character to learn.

...so, having people getting together to learn one character would help everyone. For the time being, I am going to solo-play as Valentine. Let's see who else would be interested.

Val is easy. She just doesn't have that much in the defensive department, and in teams is best as the dedicated point.

Compared to fukua, who has better projectiles, better command grabs, and a hit-invulnerable reversal. Fukua also fits pretty much anywhere in a 3 person team.

But I stick with Val cuz:
    1. s.hp footsies feels AMAZING when it hits.
    2. lvl2 counter feels so satisfying when it works
    3. How else are people going to tell me where it hurts?

Though seriously, Val is really good at building meter, has great mobility, and is very flexible to different play styles.
