...Josh's struggle to not suck...

(obligatory shrug)
You messaged me out of nowhere after I came home from NEC and told me you're stuck on PSN. from my understanding i do believe @PME, bando namcai, adeveis exist STRICTLY on psn. however judging from your previous playing habits you frequent on the dreaded cry baby quick match.
So FREESN is not exactly FREE, people are definitely looking in the wrong place tho. I've tagged the necessary people that can help you fight stronger players. Players either a bit above your level or exceedingly higher than you in hopes that you can learn from them.

If you have a capture card i would recommend using that record your sets and post them here for analysis.

Other than that. I wish you luck.

seriously though, who reads through training diaries and thinks to themselves "man what are these people joking about and referencing?"
Still though, I'll refer to this as "us" since me. Engarde, Josh, milk, others like to joke about a lot but SH is kinda too uptight for my tastes but at least we know we'll see the messages here eventually.
Also, Josh, Ben looking through ISPs and I should be getting a decent one by Jan/Feb so we can get some good matches and see how bad not playing for half a year goes.

Edit: twerk, I have no clue why you typing FREESN has me dying right now.

Haha, yeah dude. I just look at training threads from time to time so I could careless. Was just providing possible people to play other than dealing with Quickmatch cause that IS FREESN.

Side note: Did the mod clean up the training thread because of request or just happened to view shitpost? Doesn't matter i suppose.

@joshb911 mind you. you should sign up for Skullbats on PSN. Its got the good players to play against.

Twerk as always thanks for your continued help! And I didn't request the clean up I just think a mod came across which I'm fine with cause they are just doing their job.

PME C ME T_T if you dare T_T

I don't usually do normal moderation by request, as normally I'll pick it up the first time I read the thread. It wasn't a request here as well, as it usually isn't when I clean up threads that get off-topic or when people start shitposting.

Oh yeah shit I'm gonna be at GU today for a tournament so... I'll actually have match footage as long as I get on stream today so I'm hoping that happens!

I'm sure I'll critique my own play though as I always do....

I just figured training threads were at the discretion of the OP, if he was okay with minor shot posting then it's fine, etc.

Didn't you miss @Adeveis ? He still comes around on SH I think.

Not exactly sure it is fair to call it freesn. Rank is usually full of casuals in all versions of skullgirls. If you want to play the better players of psn, you should join skullbats. Got a thread about it on skullheart.

So after my time at GU I've really been stressed....
I lost to things that I should of been able to counter but couldn't. I also noticed that some people didn't play their main teams in casuals and that's been bothering me for a while. I realized this a long time ago but I really don't play well unless I have data and I wanted to ask if anyone else plays based on who your playing against rather then the character your playing against?

@mcpeanuts also said something that made me really think. "Josh throws his characters to the wolves". I know my assist calls are bad but I'm unsure how I'm supposed to call my assist well not bad?

Next I realized that I can't beat zoning players with my current team.. So I need to develop 2 main teams. I'm thinking of trying to learn a zoning based team to deal with this issue.

yeah but like
what if your counter team(s) gets countered by a zoner

For zoning teams i would recommend either going duo with filia fukua or fukua filia or. If you want trio then characters that provide armored assist may help....

So basically either you use duo or you learn big bad or cerebella.

Also do not play characters that arent ya shit. It would take a decade before i can even see you attempting to zone

I can point out some specific examples if you want. Here's your set with Deer:

The assist calls game 1 are fine at the start (better than Deer's actually, in fact he was feeding you Bella and you could have beat up on her more than you did if you wanted to), but then at 0:42 you call M Shadow with your back to the corner and both characters get hit. Now I know your assist macros were wrong for this game and this was supposed to be Updo but whatever. This is still a risky call. Deer is doing a left/right mixup to you, and both characters could die if you block + call assist but you're blocking the wrong way. Which is what happens but Deer doesn't snap so you get to keep Fukua for a little while.

1:22 is another questionable one. If you're going to call Updo while under pressure like this you should block low. If you block low the worst that could happen is Double could grab you (which means she doesn't get a happy birthday) or she could do TK Barrel or something (which you should be able to react to). If Double had just dash up c.LK here that would have been the game.

Game 2 @ 3:03 you mess up your air grab reset (happens, not worth getting stressed out over) then you land and call Fukua. Why? This call isn't doing anything for you. Moreover with this assist you either want to call it while your opponent is in blockstun or when you have some distance between you and your opponent. You call her at a time where you have no clear advantage, and the worst case scenario happens and both characters get hit.

@ 3:38 you downback and call Fukua, was this supposed to be Updo and you got mixed up as to which assist was which?

@ 4:04 you air grab and call Filia at the same time... it works out but again it's super risky. This wasn't a reset or anything, this is just you chasing his tech. As a reset calling an assist when you air grab is ok because it can force them to block if they tech the grab. Here though you're just chasing Deer's ground tech, you don't even know for sure if he'll be in the air. Maybe it was a read and you were very confident he would jump... but if you're so confident why are you calling Updo to cover yourself if he techs the air grab?? Why did you do this???

@ 4:08, about half Filia's life is red health but if you go back and rewatch she hasn't recovered a single pixel of it in the last 9 Skullseconds because you keep calling her the instant the assist is available. If you had stopped calling her she could have recovered up to around 70% of her total health but instead she dies as an assist to this PBGC.

In general it seems like you feel like you need to be calling an assist all the time. Try to get out of that mindset. Call your assists when you have specific goals you want to achieve using them. Call M Shadow from an appropriate range in order to help in neutral, don't call it when you're getting hit or they're right next to you, or both. Learn how to play defense without calling Updo; that assist is a good tool but not if you use it 100% of the time when someone is in your face, that makes you predictable.

I know my assist calls are bad but I'm unsure how I'm supposed to call my assist well not bad?

don't call assists at points where they would do nothing for you. for example when you're in the corner don't call M shadow it does absolutely nothing in that situation. Someone (i think kenin?) was telling me basically "no assist is god enough to call when you're in the corner" but especially something like M shadow is useless when you're on the defensive. Calling assists while you are already being forced to block is an easy way to get happy birthdayed as well.

(edit: peanuts posted while i was typing so probably just read that)

Next I realized that I can't beat zoning players with my current team.. So I need to develop 2 main teams. I'm thinking of trying to learn a zoning based team to deal with this issue.

tbh I don't think your team is that bad vs zoning, I would advice learning to play against zoning rather than trying to pick up anti-zoning characters because you're basically already playing them.

I realized this a long time ago but I really don't play well unless I have data and I wanted to ask if anyone else plays based on who your playing against rather then the character your playing against?
I do. I play better during re-fights, but I think this is the case with most people. I think I take the data from the first few fights more critically than some though.

I don't play Double... but is Flesh Step not good enough to deal with some zoning? Even with M Shadow keeping your approach somewhat safe?

The problem with my team is it is strong at mid range and closs up. However when I'm at full screen I don't have many options to deal with zoning. Here is my set with peanuts

@dekillsage thinks all your characters beat Peacock fwiw. Maybe he could give you some hot tipz

My great anti Peacock strat with Double: jump at her, press j.HP, hope it works

BFF Peacock for throwing bombs on reaction. Once you're in she doesn't really have any way to get away.
Double is just fast, dash cr.lk reaches super far, j.hp beats peacock air to air pretty nicely, luger -> car vs her jumping back airdash is super consistent etc. Mix that up with throws and peacock kinda fall apart, imo.

When you're fullscreen you just have to move forward and block. Button dash and hold back to advance forward without risking getting hit. Play patient and wait for your opportunity, it will come.
good luck

Josh says a lot of things without taking a proper look sometimes. On that topic, I do not know why you choose M shadow over H drill for this team. H drill gives you half screen confirms with double.

It also gets half screen confirms for filia via c.hp + assist it also makes filia very hard to fight off when H drill is deployed since it sticks them in place. It pretty much makes filia's neutral dangerous to contest when its midrange. M shadow does this too to an extent but i can only speculate you also want the "vortex", but double can do that virtually on her own. and filia is pretty potent at doing left/right, crossunders, crossups, fake crossups etc. the list can go on. TL;DR H drill makes BOTH double and filia's neutral dangerous due to conversions and it breaks armor.

I'm not saying M shadow is bad per say but i would like at least a solid answer on why M shadow over H drill for THIS team when there is a lot of benefits one assist would provide over the other. and do not say 8.5k double combos or 7.5k filia combos. because H drill pretty much can get you that or close to it. And don't even say that "to avoid happy b-days" cause from watching all of your matches at the recent GU you still call that assist with your back to the corner.

I prefer m shadow for several reasons:
Gives double the ability to keep people out with gun and m shadow.
I have bomber already so running another lock down assist is a waste of an assist spot
Double gains so much more set play with m shadow
I'm ok with Filia neutral so I don't really care about lock down
Drill caused me to develop bad habits which you can still see
M shadow allows for conversions into high damage setups for both my characters
I don't really need it to be successful and only really want to use it for combos and running in

i tried drill it didn't give me the same joy in getting a hit with it and I just don't enjoy using that assist.

Your welcome to disagree with me but to me i enjoy this team and I can play it in any order I want whenever I want and get results.

I'm gonna post an analysis video of my GU matches and I'm going to rip myself apart and explain why I did what I did cause trying to write it all out makes no sense

so I didn't really watch NEC. how'd you do Josh?

he wasn't able to make it for personal reasons

It was a family emergency I didn't want to miss it and tried every thing to ensure that I wouldn't miss it but family had to come first and I'm still unhappy about missing NEC

Ok, Sorry to hear you couldn't go. I hope everything is ok, man. Hit me up if you need anything <3

ok here is my analysis of my set vs peanuts at GU

So now I think I understand neutral better on my team. I should never go in until I actually have an opening cause let me tell you when I can out zone worldjem I think something is working. There might be something to this "zoning" after all. I've also figured out why I was losing so much, I was always just trying to block setups and not actually figuring out oh you can jump out of this??? So again another piece of the puzzle.

So after several sets I've realized that I'm just doing the same block strings and I'm getting counter hit by an assist. So I need to learn how to hit confirm off of two hits. I think I'm realizing that people can react to a block string by calling an assist and that is what seems to be getting me killed a lot. It's not neutral, it's not resets, and it's not my inability to react it's my stubbornness in just going for a 3 hit confirm. I'm also realizing that I need to be calling an assist more when I see someone using a block string. The other thing I've noticed is that I'm not frame trapping people enough so a lot of the time people are just mashing out of a situation with a fast move so I need to really start utilizing that more. Lastly I need to start using bomber to cover me in neutral. All in all I think if I can make these small adjustments i won't lose as often
