[Jul 17, 2015] Skullgirls EVO 2015 Side Tournament (Las Vegas, NV)

That's partially why I missed the stream I was looking for that info. ..or maybe I wasn't looking hard enough

I hope someone uploads top 8 to YouTube :c
There's an archive, instead of making this post you could have uploaded it to YouTube yourself...

I didn't play mike because that's unfair.
You were 0-14 vs SonicFox, btw. ;^)

But I can't help but think there's a general anti-EVO mentality, and I think that's kinda the wrong way to go.
To be 100% fair, yes. There is absolutely a general anti-EVO mentality in this community, and it is absolutely deserved. Wizard has been a shithead to our community, the event has been unfair to us for 3 years running, and it is no exaggeration to say that the way EVO has treated us is reflected in the way the general FGC treats us. Think of how many games get players because they're main stage games, and think of how many times it has been proven without a doubt which element is the chicken and which is the egg in that situation (UNIEL vs. Persona being the most recent and clear-cut example).

I understand and empathize with your personal investment in the event (especially with CEO's plummeting performance which is partially my fault and partially the same shit as Evo), but please do not take our sentiments as being against you or your contributions. Your side tournament is an awesome part of and run entirely independently of a gigantic shitshow that is across the country from the vast majority of us. For the players joining the FGC as a result of SG2E, attending majors is a zero-sum game and Evo is incredibly low on the list. For the players who have been around for a while, Evo brings up bad memories of constant mistreatment in the face of trying to perpetually prove ourselves somehow "worthy" of being treated like a "real" game (an act that we constantly witness other games not have to stoop to).

Don't think that we don't love and appreciate you, Earl. You're amazing and tubular and thick tight cyber awesome, as are all the tournaments you run and the work you do. If you're ever in Orlando, I'll take you to Disney on the house.

TBH, the community should still support the people (both players and organizers) that go out of their way for stuff like this regardless of where the event is held. It's like dumping your best friend because he associates with another group of people you don't like.

I'm still pretty dang salty about the whole Injustice thing, but that's still no excuse for not supporting the community that goes out there anyway and tries to make something happen.

Honestly EVO is a space for us to play & for eightysixed to sell shirts. I'm perfectly fine with that regardless of previous mistreatment & I really just want to play Skullgirls at this point. Big E also used to be really negative towards the SGC but we've come in full force and turned that around.

That said the likelihood of me returning to EVO next year depends on whether it becomes an "EVO vs Combo Breaker" situation or not.

Also moving this thread to completed events. It was a great weekend guys, shoutouts tomorrow I promise!

Yeah! Shoutouts! Tomorrow when we're all less dead.
Just learn to appreciate a fun event.

QFT.

I don't really do shoutouts often, so if I met you you're awesome.
And RemiKz is a cool dude that I just happen to disagree with on nearly everything. :^P

2) Making Loser's Semi-finals between Bang and SIG 3/5 when it was supposed to be 2/3. It ended up not mattering but it could've been a huge problem.

oh my bizzle, i don't remember who but someone totally said it was 3/5

oh my bizzle, i don't remember who but someone totally said it was 3/5

Yeah someone told me that too which is where I got really confused :/

That was me, and I was wrong. Realized it right after the first match started, but by then it was too late to say anything. I mean, we would've had to go with it, since that's what I told you and SIG, and it would've been unfair to then say "oh whoops, it was supposed to be 2/3 so those last couple matches didn't count.

It was just a matter of misreading the bracket. That's all.

Double post ACTIVATE

EVO has been pretty shitty to us

I agree. And yeah, that UNIEL vs Persona thing was some bullshit.

please do not take our sentiments as being against you or your contributions

Oh, I don't! I'm not taking this as some personal affront. I'm mostly just upset that people don't see EVO for the opportunity it affords the SGC despite the BS. It is STILL important to have decent numbers there (and we did, IMO, so mission accomplished!). It is STILL important to show up and have other communities see that ours is strong and thriving. It is STILL an opportunity to be highly visible to other communities, and perhaps even entice members of other communities into playing! In my mind, EVO is nothing more than a venue to hold a tournament, and a tournament that is still just as important as something like Summer Jam or NEC or whatever. Other TOs are watching. Other communities are watching. We should be at our best ALL THE TIME. To not seize on the opportunity to shine - and, as a community that constantly struggles to earn acceptance, to not make every effort to bring attention to it, is foolish and makes me wish I hadn't tried so hard.

If you're ever in Orlando, I'll take you to Disney on the house.

Keeping this short because I'm exhausted.

If you showed up to EVO, you are awesome, and I love you.

Special shoutouts to caramelized onions (pronounced however you like it) on hamburgers.

Love you to bby

I was on a family vacation so I couldn't see EVO at all. However, I just want to throw my 2 cents in. EVO, from my perspective, seems to have it out for SG. I would love to go and watch some of the matches, but the whole affair leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but when talking to other ppl, the hype was real. I dunno, I guess the whole attitude towards it around here killed any hype I had...Hopefully I'll be able to actually participate myself next year just to prove to everyone yet again that I really only do exist to be your punching bag, but at least its a fun way to be a punching bag.

Those caramelized onions were nigh out of this world indeed. And, again, thank you for the paypal favor!

Alright, time for the shoutouts. You ready?

First of all, if I don't mention you know that I still had an incredible time if I spent any time with you at all then it was probably a good time. I have zero negative things about the Skullgirls players I spent time with this weekend. I love you all.

@MysteriousJ Congrats on getting 9th! You had some really incredible moments on stream and even though you dropped the set vs TJ, it was super cool to see you come close. I know that if you keep working at it you're going to do really well in this game, especially since you make an effort to attend so many events. Remember what I told you about identifying players who lean on their reversal assists, because there's a lot more people you can beat once you get good at that. Also i'll be sure to give you my phone number at the next event we're at so I don't forget to respond to you on skullheart ;-;

@Bit_Strife @Fosh I know you guys aren't happy with how you did in tournament, but considering this is really only the second major for both of you I think you guys did really well. Was nice to see you again Michael. Fosh I miss you already and you're going to wreck face at offline events once you get more comfortable with them. Please come to NEC both of you. Thanks!

@MegamanDS Great MM set. Finally got to play you at an offline event after accidentally dodging you like three events in a row. I'll get you next time.

@Beamsprouts Grats on 9th. I'm glad you finally placed well at a major and I hope you got some of your motivation back. The only reason I got Top 8 instead of you was because you had an infinitely more difficult pool. If you work at this game (and UNIEL) I know that you can start the climb towards top level play because you're such a smart player.

@Mike_Z This was the first time I had a conversation with you outside of saying hello to your butt at UGC. I actually loved talking to you. You're super insightful about game design, really funny in person, super fun to play with, and honestly a really friendly guy. I also heard you really believed in me for Top 8, so sorry for disappointing you with my performance, heh.

So about that indivisible battle system? Still interested in hearing about it :^P

@BANG! Congratulations on placing fourth. You played out of your mind in Top 8 and that Big Band level 5 song was absolutely incredible. I loved having another person to talk about Ecco with and I cannot wait to spend more time with you in the future (SCR?)

@Negus Eyoel Wish I got to spend more time with you this weekend, but as always I loved hanging out with you and the rest of Fresno. Good luck getting TOOD and Skippy back into the game :v

@NeonNightRider @Nekro_Surge great seeing you guys for the first time fucking FOREVER.

@SonicFox5000 @Swiftfox-Dash You guys are both amazing and super fun to be around. Sonic you have the absolute best mindset towards fighting games, and good shit blowing me up with a double you don't even have :^)

And last, thank you everybody who supported me on stream. I'm sorry I choked so hard in Top 8.

Also next time can we please pre-ban @Mocktopus from stream chat? :^)

Shout outs time? Alright shout outs time. In no particular order...

@NeonNightRider @Alcren (whatever your SH tag may be) For rooming with me and bringing some of the food and drink burdens on themselves. That helped a lot over the weekend. Also was super convenient for the suite we accidentally ran. Also for hanging with me the whole weekend and being kickass dudes.

@Weatherbee For hanging with us the bulk of the weekend as well. Plus the pizza you got on Sunday night.

@Dolfinh @Beamsprouts @Biz_Casual for always coming to events and keeping the NorCal scene strong! It would for sure be dead without you. And congrats on placing so well! Especially our 5th place Illuminati Master. Also for loning us a set up for the suite.

@render For hosting the tournament and for allowing me to tag along with you guys a few times for dinner and stuff! You seem like a really cool dude! And I now know not to challenge your eating prowess.

@Mike_Z For coming to our room and playing games with us all! Even if you can't tell the difference between me and Beam. Thanks for the tips and the small compliment. Immediately followed by an insult.

@josshu For coming out and hanging with us for some games! Glad you got to experience a big SG tournament!

@Nekro_Surge For chilling with us for the weekend and coming out! Sorry you couldn't get more sleep. But at least you got to make yourself a cool bed.

And shout outs to everyone else who stopped by the suite to play and hang! To anyone I played with in tournament or casuals! And to everyone else I met that weekend! My first EVO was amazing because of you and I'd be glad to go again!

It's pretty hard not to be friendly toward Dolfinh. I tried - he's just too upbeat. :^P

Everyone I met was really great! People were even nice to me, which is difficult to do. ;^)

I will do three specific shoutouts, though:

@cybik: I salute you, dude. You're nice, knowledgeable, well-spoken, reliable, and respectful. I sorta wish I were you, and I hope you have amazing success in life.

@the guy who ran the Guard Break stream (I dunno if he has an SH account) and his companion, my wonderful co-commentatrix: Thank you for the huge amount of time you spent taking care of things!

@render: Words cannot express, as happens every year. Please allow other people to tell you when you can take breaks. :^)

Oh man how did I forget. I'm terrible with names but if I don't mention you and we interacted in some form, I was probably having a good time.

@Dolfinh : Thanks for trying to help me out when I had to play in top 8. Sorry for my sloppy performance after the fact :P Also thanks a bunch for letting me hang out with you guys on Sunday, had fun. I'll definitely try to make it out to some tournaments in norcal.

@Mike_Z : Was great finally meeting you. You were actually really fun to play against and wish I could have gotten a few more games in. I'm sure one day we will find something we can both agree on.

@juan : For making the effort with solo. One day you'll be good at HuniePop.

@Swiftfox-Dash : We finally got to formally introduce each other after no one knew who I was from last year's evo lol. Congrats on 2nd place.

@render : I don't know how you can stay so dang energetic with a smile on your face the entire day. Great meeting you and thanks a bunch for organizing the event!

@BrandX+ : Shame you didn't participate this year. I'll be seeing you around next year. Still jealous of the signed SF2 box from Ono.

@Negus Eyoel : We didn't talk very much but was nice chatting with you on finals day.

@BANG! : Holy crap dude you played pretty awesome! One of the funner players to watch.

@SonicFox5000 : You are a nut dude lol. Congrats on being the '15 evo champ.

@everyone that hung out with me on sunday : Nice finally meeting people!

@everyone else I played : Sorry, I'm trash with names :( don't think I forgot who you are or our games though!

Augh I totally forgot to give you a shoutout ):

Please try and come to our local next month on the 22nd. 99.9% chance you can stay in the Beamsprouts Skullgirls Inn; fenster and potentially WingZero will be there as well.

I still haven't managed to understand where in the name of the Great Elder Gods he put all that food. Current theory: he has a pocket dimension for a stomach.

What can I answer to that, other than "I am humbled"? And you're not so bad yourself, good sir.

Well alright I better do my shoutouts. It's important after an event afterall:

@render : Once again you always make me smile. You are always so energetic and so positive and always trying to get things done for the best. You once again ran a wonderful tourney and did an awesome job. You were also a blast to hang out with over dinner haha. I wish we had gotten to play, but we can play eventually :P Hope to see you again render, you are honestly my favorite person to talk to from lab zero XD

@Ravidrath You are a very cool guy to have a discussion with. It was interesting to hear your background in the video game industry and I learned a ton about you this Evo than any other time we've met (Which was I think we only talked at Playstation Experience). I'm glad we both share the same opinions on the current state of the Japanese gaming industry haha. Hopefully we can talk again at future events. It was great seeing you again man.

@Mike_Z and his wife Rachel: We didn't talk much Mike. I understand. Still need to give a shoutout cause you kicked ass at Skullgirls and Guilty Gear. Total respect man. It was also a pleasure seeing Rachel, she is always so much fun to talk to.

@RemiKz : I already talked to you via Steam, but I thought I would give you a shout out. Once again, congrats on making top 8 dude. It's great talking to you and hope to compete next evo so we can kick each others ass lol.

@cybik : Dude, you are fucking fantastic. It was an honor testing out your linux version as much as possible. You also gave me some neat advice on what kind of phone to get and what I can do to upgrade my computer to make it even better. Also that programming advice, I'll definitely look into learning C#. I don't know what it was, but you were just an awesome dude and pretty damn funny as well. I hope we can meet again at future event.s

@DaRabidDuckie : You are a fucking riot dude. We only really talked much over dinner, but it was once again great to chat with you (especially about the lewd stuff lol). You definitely are my go to person when it comes to arcade stick mods and fixes. Hope to see you soon!

@Weatherbee : You are like the best friend I wish I had dude. Hanging out with you is like hanging out with a high school friend. You are funny and you still rock that awesome Painwheel/Big Band team (Great games btw!). You are a chill guy and I hope we can hang out again very soon.

@Nekro_Surge : That fucking arcade stick was sick dude. Seeing it in person was just mindblowing. You have such good craftsmanship. I wish you would have put the bodies of your defeated opponents inside. You are a chill dude as usual, and you know how to keep your hair stylish as ever. See ya later dude!

@Bit_Strife : Seeing you in person was great. You are a pretty awesome guy to talk to! Hope to play you more :D

@guitalex2007 and his wife: You two were great to hang out with as usual, funny and just knew how to make me smile. Your wife is just the biggest ball of sunshine and made me laugh so hard many times. It was also great when you were reading the stream chat during top 8 guitalex, we just died laughing haha. Hope to see you guys again one day :)

@SonicFox5000 : We didn't talk at all. I was too scared to. But congrats on Winning Evo 2015. You and @Swiftfox-Dash are cute together :)

@Dolfinh : It was nice meet you dude! You did a great job in Skullgirls Top 8 and you are still a masterful Ecco player. Hopefully I'll train up and we can have more matches in the future :) You are a cool guy.

If I didn't mention you but we did talk and hang out, then shoutouts to you too! Hope to see everyone at Evo 2016. Hopefully I'll know a bit more about the Vegas area so we don't get lost going to a restaurant next time :P (I know like .5% of the actual strip)

I had fun seeing you all. It lifts my spirits.

From both myself and from Eighty Sixed,

I want to give a shout out to all the players that came out to support this great game. Whether you entered, played casuals, streamed/recorded, watched from home or were the wife/girlfriend husband/boyfriend on the sidelines watching, THANK YOU. Because of you, this game is a huge success and will continue to get the love and support from this community.

I want to give a big shout to guardbreak with Kayla and Chris (boy I hope I got their stream name and real names right) for streaming the tournament as well as bringing that awesme playbook setup. We appreciate the work you guys put in to make it happen and both of you made it fun and easy to work with.

Also, the 2 men of the hour that I always have to give it up for... @render and @Mike_Z . Without you guys, this would not be in my life. So thank you to you guys and your team at Lab Zero.

PS. Working at my booth, I took a photo of my view. This is what I saw for a solid 90% of the tournament. <3 awwww

if SCR has SG then fo sho

DID THEY WRAP THEIR TAILS TOGETHER are you kidding me...

d'awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Okay, i watched top 8 live, and some of the money matches live too, can someone link me to the moment where someone used the Squigly lvl 5? my stream lagged at the time. Other thing, since i'm kinda new here, can someone explain me what is the deal between skullgirls and Evo? the organizes don't like us?

Lack of coverage of tournament streams on skullheart's news page is something that's bugged me for a while. I didn't post about evo since I wasn't 100% sure of the stream schedule (especially with pools being streamed out of nowhere), but I'm plugging this thread as a community hub for info on tournament streams: http://skullheart.com/index.php?threads/tournament-streams.6648/

@Dolfinh I hope we get to play more at whatever we're both at next!

@Weatherbee Once I figure out dudley combos into super, I'd totally be down for another ft200. Thanks for playing so long. You must really love 3rd strike... o_o

I mean.... Ky and Sol are known to wrap their ponytails together so... okay!
