So, as far as I can tell, there's not really any Magic thread on the site, and I thought "why not?"

I'm still trying to understand the game, and I would love to learn some stuff from people on here who used to play or still play the game today.

from what I can tell, I think I would favor a green deck but with either white or red to go along with it. any recommendations?

feel free to tell us about you Magic pasts as well too. :)

Every color has its strengths and weaknesses, so you should get a feel for everything.
I recommend keeping a budget. Seriously.

I'm probably gonna stick with deck builders toolkits.

also, I think I found a good combo of a deck that can provide me with a lot of mana and life regenerating monsters including monsters that benefit from life regen. what do you think?

Can't give my opinions on your deck or combo without knowing the pieces. May I ask you post it a general breakdown?
Also all answers change based on what format you are playing and what kind of budget you are working with.

I have played a lot of Magic back in school, a friend of mine used the Yugioh hype to introduce everyone to Magic. For the people who couldnt afford the cards, like me, he made decks from his own cards and borrowed them to everyone who wanted to play. And not bad crappy ones, he only gave out decks he would play with too. Since then I love this game, but to this day I don't own any cards. I played the video games sometimes but they are not as much fun. From time to time I go to local tournaments and play with other peoples decks again, that's cool too.

My favorite color is Green, I love the big creatures and spells. I played a Green/Red Dragon deck once and that was a lot of fun.

Yet another thread Stoopkid sets up shop in.

I've been playing since 2nd grade (im 22 now)

In my time I've found that your personality matches what color you'll play.

Lets start with tell me what you know and I'll help from there

There's no foolproof strategy, really. It's probably best to use your deck and retool it afterwards. It takes time to get its strengths and weaknesses, and it depends a lot on your opponents, too.

I'm more referring to how there's possibly years of meta that I probably know little about. I think I have and idea what some terms like flying and trample can do, but there are still some things I'm probably a bit hazy on.

I like the idea of constantly providing myself with land/mana and being able to increase my life throughout the game.

the colors I like though are red, green, and white, but I mainly want to have green and one other color.

Oh, tell me more! I want to know what kind of despicable person I am for wanting a pet Craw Wurm.

If you are just starting, disregard the history. There is a long history of archetypes and mechanics that would just be too much if you try to take it in all at once. Luckily, Magic is pretty good in that it has formats where only the most recent cards a legal, so you could look to study those if you want to get a grasp at some on the basics.

Also, I recommend getting a pre-constructed Commander deck if you have some spare cash. Commander is a good format as you can make it as casual or as serious as you want. And, I find the format creates situations that will teach you some of the nuances of magic that are not so obvious.

EDIT:
As for deck feedback, I'm not sure where to start. There are some decisions that are puzzling, but make sense if I look at it from a perspective of card shortage. You have any other green or white cards? Or is that pretty much it?

Life gain can work as a strategy just fine, as long as it doesn't distract from your offensive game. If you plan on playing defensively, then I'd recommend blue or white emphasis. No color can win alone.

Look, focus on the basics cause the keywords like flying haste vigilance will be explained on some of the cards anyways so you can go to those for references.

Try Green and Red

This is my personal opinion but I'm not a fan of Green and White as they don't provide enough strength for me.

Gaining life and ramping (trying to build mana fast) are always cool but where's your win strategy? I find that alot of people learning say they want to make decks based on this... well that and Drawing cards.

I'm against anyone telling people what to play cause I'm all about having fun (I made a Little Girl Deck look her up) but I'm all about giving advice to what is good and what isn't

Me, I play Blk/Wht staying true to my Orzhov theme

@Detective Q sounds like you'd play Green Black why not own a Vizzerdrix instead?

Sorry for the double post but you wouldn't believe it but I played against a mono red lightning deck which was dangerous and owned people in four turns

...And that's when life gaining comes in handy.

Usually though, you want a way to put your opponent on the defensive.

Don't get me wrong my deck actually is all about life gain but it's not enough to just gain life, you need that finisher and you know just as well as me that red decks need to finsh the job quickly or they don't finish its just to the guy playing non life gain decks, what do you do to one drop 3/1 tramples lightning bolts and Lightning Balls.

I'll post my deck list later along with some custom art I did on a few. kinda tired from late shift

Hell no, that thing is batshit insane, why would I want that? Also isnt it Blue anyways? At least it was the last time I saw it. We're talking about the piranha-rabbit hybrit, right?

its just to the guy playing non life gain decks, what do you do to one drop 3/1 tramples lightning bolts and Lightning Balls.

Oh yeah, normally that wins easy. Then you have to build a deck specifically to counter it, like with lots of protection from red and counterspells.

Yes sir and yeah its blue, but come on man think about the good times you'll have
Mhm... *Dream Sequence*

*Q imagins sitting on a swing, Vizzerdrix pushing him up higher and higher*

*Q imagins sitting inside a train, having a whole compartment for himself because nobody dares to go near Vizzerdrix*

*Q imagins his future kids riding on Vizzerdrix, laughing, pulling its ears, it then starts to mangle them in return, blood everywhere*

Yeah no, sorry, Craw Wurm it is. It can be my own swing, is basically a train itself and if it does decide to eat my kids, at least it wont make a bloody mess.

Damn, it took us this long to get a MTG thread going?

Anyways, I was thinkin' of getting back into Magic. I've got some friends that still play, so I might be hittin' this thread up somewhat often now that it's finally around.

Oh magic thread, that is cool.

I am not really an experienced person in magic the gathering and have only played a few games.

Everyone has already said but just play what deck you like @SanoBaron, for me I just play a red deck and combine it with every colour to see if I like and due to the amount of cards I have now, I play a red and blue deck as of currently.

I play a red and blue deck as of currently.

Oh these are mad fun as well. I played one some time ago that was based around card draw and dealing damage while doing so, featuring Niv-Mizzet the Firemind. It wasnt very consistent but man it felt good when it started working.

I don't really have the greatest constructed deck as it still just the pre built deck plus lots of boosters but I feel it is somewhat decent but then I haven't gone up against any amazing decks although I have seen some of them in play and they are so powerful it is crazy.

Couple of questions, are you making the deck to play for fun or at tournaments?

Second tell me the strategy I see your going for a life gain while buffing your creatures but I don't want to assume

Third are you willing to spend money on singles and not just buying packs (I'll help you based on your budget and the money your willing to spend)?

Edit: couple of points though, you don't need that guildgate I looked for the blue in the deck and didn't see it so thats a land spot either your forest or plains or a multicolored land of the two could occupy next 33 lands is too much 20-24 lands is a good balance look at like this, after you successfully draw enough lands to play everything do you want to draw more for the next 4 turns or would you like to play the game?

Next you have alot singles like suntail hawk for example which you don't need

You play green white, alot of your spells come out later you need cards for the early game, green white is the best at early game presence try running cards that produce tokens while you gain life. Green White suffers from not being able to be aggressive in the later games despite green having a solid late game so if you don't start off aggressive you'll have a hard time in the late game

After actually looking at the deck, yeah, I think you have too much land. That space can be better put towards more creatures. I disagree about removing the small creatures, though, since you'll want disposable things. You have too few in my opinion.

If you are playing modern..

Here are a few:

Any naya block alara cards (red green white)
Path to exile.
Kitchen finks.
Rampant growth and various mana generating creatures.
And add some trample and or lifelink in there (loxodon warhammer is rad).
Narrow down what cards you use so you aren't running quite as many singles.
Have a clear end game in mind.
Lower your mana curb and or add more mana producers.
If you do switch to red green white give godsire or titanic ultimatum a shot.

I like what you have now but it's a little puny for a green based deck. Needs more big beefy. Green accells at token gen..but you aren't running tokens so mana gen and big creatures should be the way to go. You have life gain...but not enough to really be annoying as you need to be..So go for more big white creatures and white removal.

If you need questions on how the deck functions don't be afraid to ask

@6Phase6 no im saying add small creatures but that single suntail hawk is useless and could be replaced with a more effective 1 drop like BOP, Lanowar Elf, A two drop with pretty solid power toughness or even a token producer

@Humdinger I never saw the hype with Kitchen Finks why are that so good?

It's inexpensive for what it does mainly. Persist gives it some longevity and the life-gain is a nice bonus.

I'm personally working on my jeskai and grixis decks respectivly

Grixis Control/burn/mill

4x Lightning Bolt
4x Terminate
2x Mana Leak
2x Duress
2x Ponder
2x Blightning
2x Countersquall
2x Call to Heel
1x Deny Reality
2x Ashiok Nightmare Weaver
2x Chandra Ablaze

4x Vampie Nighthawk
4x Sedraxis Specter
3x Kathari Remnant
2x Master of Cruelties
2x Spellheart Chimera

1x Akoum Refuge
1x Shivan Reef
1x Rakdos Carnerium
4x Crumbling Necropolis
1x Drowned Catacomb
1x Dragonskull Summit
...and a relatively boring number of basic lands.

Basic strategy here...you don't get to play as I burn counter and do whatever I need to do to whittle down your life total or stall until I can do those things. If you prioritize wrong Ashiok mills you to death. If I get out Master and have additional burn lying around it's gg.

@PKStoopKid Gotcha. Although there's enough mana in there already, right?

@SanoBaron Trample is a good mechanic to focus on for your creatures, but you need big ones to use it right. I'd recommend having another mechanic to go with life gain and mana gain. Trample and flying are in there, but barely, not enough for attacking with. Do you have cards with other skills? More trample and flying?

In that color pallete you wanna go with angels/cheap white fliers or reach in that respect.

The current set is really fun btw.

Actually the next part of it comes out pretty soon with dragons and stuff.

Has anyone tried Esper in modern since Khans? It looks viable, since there's relevant fetches now, but I don't want to commit to getting the last few Cryptic Commands I'd need. I'm a big fan of 4 mana almost Vindicate too.

@SanoBaron I'm gonna assume you don't live in New Jersey or if you do not in south jersey if so I would love to meet up and play a few

@alexpi only play Orzhov (I have other decks) im a solid support of my guild have been since their debut

okay, heres 4 monsters I was thinking of adding since they don't have high cost but I also like their abilities:

Centaur's Herald
Rootwalla
Deadly Recluse
Voracious Worm

what do you think?

also, I can add an axebane guardian and another axebane stag.

Last edited:
Not a big fan of rootwalla or centaur's herald.

Not sure you have enough lifegain for Voracious worm to be that great..but if you add more than that's fine. You would also need to find a way to get it to hit people directly.

although I lack a lot of good monsters in it, I was thinking of taking out the white and replacing it with red since I have a lot of opponent damaging spells. plus, I have some sliver creatures that could also work with each other between red and green.
