This thread is dedicated to animating and creating images of Panzerfaust. Why him? Because he is a WWII-inspired, patriotic super soldier wearing a chainsaw-treaded-tank on his arm. The possibilites for his moves and animations are limitless. If that doesn't sell you to his character, I hope the above propaganda poster or the animations on this thread will.

To start off, here is a 2xMP/HP + uppercut/anti-air combo (codename: obvious combo). I posted this earlier on general art thread, and the positive responses + how much fun I had doing this made me want to do more. There are lots things wrong here: the last punch will probably miss, because the target is flying away from the previous explosion. Also, the explosions direction is wrong: i must have been thinking about a fireball rather than a tank shot.

Here is a still image of Panzerfaust's colored idle position, background and Parasoul are there for scaling purposes. Panzerfaust's tank arm is huge - to prevent it from blocking all the details of his suit, I put it on the arm facing away from camera. Also, he is more ready to defend himself with the tank. There's still lot of detail and cleanup work left (compare to Parasoul: lines and shadings are messy), so this isn't anywhere near complete.

And now for couple of new animations. Like the previous one, these all are rough ones. I probably won't be doing any super-refined animations for now, at least until I run out of ideas for new moves. I am a graphic designer, and animation is more of my fun hobby, so I'm more efficient at doing simple, pose-based animation rather than fluid motion.

s. LP: Disicplinary action. (Suddenly, diet! Also, he is probably facing too much into the camera. Because he is so huge, he also has to aim low to hit small characters.)

c. LK: Tropak ( :D huzzah! Tried to emphasize his legs for obvious reasons.)
XanOgmw.gif
Parasoul: "...really?"

And now that the funnier ones are out of the way, it's time for something a little more badass.

Throw: Brutal efficiency (alternate name: Drop the Mike.)
iRzxQlh.gif
ouch.

That's all for now. I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed making them! Oh, and please share your own images/animations/ideas you have for Panzerfaust here! Lastly, critique is extremely welcome - as I said earlier, I'm not a professional animator, so if you notice any glaring problems please tell me!

Consider me a fan of yours, Panzie is one of my favourite characters and you're doing an excelent job with him!
Do you plan to animate the idle? Otherwise I could give a try myself.

Alright I wish you all the luck

What size is panzerfaust in your pictures anyways?
also I think you might want to redo his right hand. Don't know why but it doesn't seem like it should look that way to me. but again that's just me

Feel free to do it! To make things clear, this is Panzerfaust thread, and not my thread. Anyone can contribute!

I agree on the right arm, the elbow is too low and the folds are wrong. Also, his granade belt and granades are need reworking.

First update! Time for some patriotism:

LK/MK: Canopy march (NOT walking animation :P)
R4kKg0x.gif

Victory pose (#1). That tank sure can stand recoil, eh?
QiVcbqt.gif
(only a single tear for "real" pose, here it loops too often.)

I wouldn’t really bother if that was his normal walk, it would fit. But better off as a kick.

Have you thought about dash/run-special yet? I always imagined he would slam his Panzerfaust into the ground, the chains would start moving and it would drive him forward really fast as opposed to his really slow, normal walk. There could also be a second phase there he would fire the canon either up to stop right where he is (canceling the movement immediately) or down to leap over the opponent for cross-ups or to avoid incoming attacks.

I imagine it very loud do to the chains ripping up the ground and there would be rock/floor-fragments flying around because of it.

And with his win pose, I like it, but I would add some stuff that is hard to animate so you don’t have to do it. For example, I would have him salute with the other arm, and the tank cannon would shoot fireworks that have a strong lighting effect on the stage. Maybe even have some clacks opening on the tank so that white pigeons fly out to make it look really patriotic in an excessive, silly way.

Problem with march as his walk is that it might make him a little too silly character. I'm not 100% sure about his character and personality, especially the ratio between serious stuff/funny stuff. I'm currently leaning in the direction that his low/small moves and victory/defeat poses are on the sillier side, whereas his medium/hard/special moves are more serious stuff.
For example, the having a tank operator in the tank would give him a more comedic aspect (biggie/smalls, buddy cops etc.). It would make tons of new moves possible (example: timeout lose - operator gets out of smoking tank and starts yelling angrily at frightened Panzer), but he would no longer be as much of a badass war hero.
Are there any official sources on his personality? I know that he's a reckless, loyal, patriotic war hero/veteran (Is he famous?), and that he needs to replace the tank often due to his crazy moves, but other than that i'm not sure.

Your run idea is cool! For forward dash I was thinking that he does a cannon-enpowered leap forward (with a little leaping out of explosion).

The win pose is really lazy, it's missing the initial animation (straighten back, slam legs together, raise arm to salutation, hatch opens up and flag rolls out etc.). Pigeons would be perfect for this :D. I intended that he is salutating with his tank-arm (arm raised upward), so salutating with both hands would be weird. On the other hand, if he raises the arm only to fire the cannon/raise flag, then i guess the right arm could salute.

I think the pose would look better 3/4, but maaan do I love that tear.

And you shouldn't worry, characters being both very silly and badass is a Skullgirls thing. Eliza is the perfect example

I was talking more about how silly/serious a character is, like is he 50/50 silly/serious or 20/80. Using other characters as example, Peacock is incredibly silly, whereas double is really serious (both with exeptions of course: Peacock's goodfellas is cruel and doubles teacup is silly), and Fortune is probably in the middle.
For something as prominent as walking animation, it's pretty important to give proper impression.

About the personality, I don’t think they mentioned anything besides him being a die hard soldier. But that doesn’t say anything, he can be someone who likes jokes, knitting or who plays Bingo whenever he can.

I personally would say he looks tough and strong but is gentle and caring at heart. And he's pretty sad that many people fear him because of his looks. He tries to make jokes or funny poses but because of his appearance its rather grotesque and silly. But over anything he is a patriot who loves his country and will do anything to defend it from the Skullgirl. I would also say he likes the princesses and his unit because they are the only people who don’t fear him. I wouldn’t say he is famous, people do know him but they mostly fear him rather than to see him as a hero, and he isn’t good dealing with crowds or people he doesn’t know yet, he is rather for himself or with people he knows and likes. With something crazy, I would say he loves board & card games but is a sore loser, although he isn’t really mad for long and just wants to play again until he wins.

Saying that, I think he can be silly, but I would limit it to things that don’t happen in battle, like intro, win & lose pose or taunt. In battle he is merciless and fights like a machine. But everything you showed so far is great, although the kick for example is a little silly, it fits with his military assignment and his patriotic nature so I would keep it.

The idea with the operator is nice, but I would prefer him to be in charge of the tank.

With the win pose, I think he would raise the tank arm, the flags and pigeons come out, he salutes with his other arm, starts firing the tank arm and sheds a tear. The shots loop and the fireworks change color.

@Tukenukem Your animations so far are nice and captures the spirit of a solider!

Ok, here's something little different and a little more special.

5-star Blockbuster: War ender
kUaK1va.gif

To be perfectly honest, I was planning to save this for much later. However, after sketching the final frame i started to do the whole thing. When it was done I couldn't wait to post it... so here it is.

If you're going to listen to the sound effect on Youtube or somewhere else, make sure that the volume isn't too high. If the move doesn't finish the opponent, instead of holding a flag he holds the enemy's body and tosses it to the side, then the fight continues. Also, works like Valentine's blockbuster: you can skip the explosion-cutscene ("what cutscene? that's only one frame!" :| ) by holding down punch.

Special move: Granade throw (M-version)
hPMhx34.gif

Not the most original move, but the motion is a little more fluid this time (...don't look at the legs. Or the proportions. Or at anything.) I have a little more exciting plans for light and heavy versions, but i might save those for later... because I realized i haven't really done much with the tank arm yet!

Special move: Granade throw (M-version)
looks like a heavy version to me by how far it goes but then again Panzerfaust is a pretty big guy, so who knows
looking good (probably get rid of the thumbs up part maybe?)

You've got some really great stuff in here. I get all sorts of excited when I get an alert from this thread.
Keep up the good work~

(Really love his c. LK by the way!)

... I completely forgot to mention that the thumbs up was just a joke :<
Besides, what a crappy projectile, it has so much recovery!

This is AMAZING! Keep going, soldier!

These are quite good. You are doing a good job of incorporating various aspects of military life (the march, ramrod-straight back during throw, etc). But what do I know? I play Bella.
He was number one on my voting list.

by the way what size do you draw Panzerfaust at?

work files are about 1600 x 1300, and I reduce their size by 50% when turning them into gifs. Panzer is ~615 pixels tall without the antenna(so ~307 pixels in gifs)

I have been really busy this week, but I managed to make a quick one.

HP/special move (no great name ideas, so chainsaw punch i guess). Chainsaw could prevent opponent from being launched away, to enable further combos. There could be a uppercut variation (like in the very first gif) with crouching hp or with alternative special.

BjoGVBW.gif
Seriously considering a ninja edit to fix that god-awful tank arm drawing...

Also, I'm curious of what kind of moves you prefer to watch: more conceptual ones with minimal frames like this and the nuke, or something with better motion (and worse drawings) like the march or granade. Also, I could try to make a "finished" looking move, but that would eat up a lot of time.

maybe it should be angled downward some? he's suppose to be a pretty big dude right wouldn't that move just whiff right over everyone's head if he punched straight?

I say it's fine like this afterall these are just the drafts. If you wanna make them prettier be my guest but it's not that necessary

Starting with a rather random observation, the propaganda poster quickly reminded me of this track from the GigaWing 2 OST.
Always imagined his theme to be something in such a style.

Anyway, really enjoying many of these as they remind me of the times when Panzerfaust was my favorite Skulldude (but then Mr Birdland filled the armored giant quota).
Incidentally, I don't know if you are familiar with Max Anarchy and, even though they are not part of his official inspiration list, I can't help but think Jack and Douglas can give Panzerfaust some pointers on how to defend the Motherland.

I can see this as a two-part move: the lunge with treads primed and a second part where he locks the opponent's head between the treads, lifts the opponent a bit higher and lets it rip before tossing him away.

This isn't really an answer but I'd say whichever best suits your fancy. I'm personally partial to the first since the higher detail lets us appreciate the nuances better but either is good.

Random move idea that occurred to me from looking at the poster: how about a special move/Blockbuster where he shoots down an enemy airplane and it crashes on the stage? Maybe it could have a delayed effect like Peacock's Lenny.

Keep up the good work. <(__)>

Funny how much of different impressions a single image can give to people, I was personally thinking something more like this or this (more specifically from beginning to 45 seconds). Crashing plane move sounds awesome, but whose planes is Panzer shooting down exactly? If it's Canopy Kingdom's own planes, I doubt he would remain a soldier for long. On the other hand, if we see the pilots jumping out with parachutes it would be really crazy and ridiculously expensive move... which i guess would fit Panzerfaust perfectly. :PUN:
I already have one move idea for Panzer which uses the poster's theme, but i don't want to talk about it yet ;)

I haven't heard about Max Anarchy before, but Jack is familiar from MadWorld for Wii, one of the coolest looking games I have played with its Sin City vibe. Some people complained that they couldn't understand the graphics clearly :|
Thanks!

Propaganda certainly has the military vibe but after knowing the "lyrics", I just can't associate the tune with him.
But yooooo! Frank Klepacki! Represent! C&C:RA2 was one of my top 3 favorite PC games...though my strategy was just making big ass tanks and plow through everything. I didn't do well in naval battles. (.__.)

In hindsight, I admit the planes might be a silly idea. The Canopy Kingdom is probably not at war with anyone that has a aircraft fleet... unless we wanna count the Medici's blimp. :3

And yeah, it's the same Jack from MadWorld. Mathilda, Black Baron and Alana also appear in Max Anarchy.

You are spectacular dude. I don't know how on earth (or Meridian) I missed this, but it all looks fantastic! I've liked the big guy since I first saw him, but after GeneralIvan did his vocal take on him, my hype for him was at a newfound high.

I look forward to more art of the giant superpatriot. Oh yes, also, I agree with @Detective Q about his personality and perception. I can see him being rather fond of the Egrets, heck in one my headcanons I had it that he loves the team movie night so that everyone sits together, has good food, and just can have a good time without going out into public.

It's good to see that you're still at it Tukenukem, I had a blast revisiting this thread. I still hope Panzerfaust comes around someday, and that they make similar decisions like you do with the character.

Time for some more sloppy animation - Walking!
np2Chhi.gif

Compared to the march, I wanted the normal walk to be heavier and more "serious", like a tank is about to roll over you. I might want to try make a even heavier version, where he really stomps the ground while walking.

Nice. What other touches are you thinking about giving him? Tank hand only relaxing slightly before going back to an iron grip? Smoke exhalations?

Really great stuff on here.
Makes me really wish he got in.

I like how you make him kind of goofy, I always thought of Hubrecht as the funny-big guy and Panzerfaust as the serious stern big guy, but I think every character needs a sense of humor in Skullgirls, I mean what's the fun of a serious character in any fighting game?

I'm getting a pretty cool Odin Sphere vibe from the guy. I like it

Special move: Granade throw (S)
jSpVxcu.gif

The punch is optional, I guess, but he has to be able to punch a granade, just because.

Special move: Granade throw (H) / Blockbuster

Pulling a warhead from nowhere, like usual.

He's angry because someone stole his helmet.

Those are really good ideas! I try to consecrate on primary motions, so I don't really have plans for fine details. If I ever do a refined move, i will probably start with walk or idle because you can really get into the small stuff.

Odin Sphere / Muramasa: Demon blade / Dragon's crown have a really distinct way of animation, splicing characters into pieces and using those to their full potential. In my case, it's just being lazy :P Also, ridiculous proportions.

lol the Grab dumby's face XD
