Report Replays? In My Skullgirls Encore?

Basically if there was any sort of format that the replays could be exported to and loaded in game we would be golden.
Most Pc FG's just have a "replay" folder beside the exe.
If we could pop new replays in there or take existing ones out I think the community could sort itself out for sending them around.
The replay thread would be like hey check out EMP_WorldJams_Sleeves_VS_CiscoKid.enc
with little download link or something.
Then you would put that in the replay folder, which might even support sub folders so you can organize them! (Hisoutensoku!)

All that UI work though man RIP Mike.

3S Online Edition allows you to link your YouTube account to directly upload replays (at least on PS3).
There was also a 3S Online Edition channel that people could upload to, but I'm not sure how and why (I think it was due to a limitation on 360).

Yet again Mike getting spit in his face for absolutly no reason once again. Well done humanity. I applaud you! *sigh*
So what is this going to be called? "Behind the scenes"

Huh?

I can only speak for RTS games, but here are some examples:
So basically everything requires an external server. No dice.
But yeah they'll be in a format you can upload to places.

Youtube uploads is out, that requires a codec and things we don't have. :^P

Oh as far as the news goes, replays have been "in the works" for a year and some-odd. Hahahahaa...

I think Gluem was talking about what the guy said on the SRK forums about you.

Also that's perfect! Can't wait for the replay thread!

I suppose I was too exhaustive, but the GameReplays example is the salient one, as it is the best example I know of "places". But yeah, the uploadable format is definitely the key feature, everything else I've mentioned is indeed just nice-to-have conveniences.

Or replay forum, each thread being a series or game or tournament or whatever.

Not that it's needed. I doubt anyone would have problem just running the replay and recording it with some external program like Fraps, since perfect FPS won't be required then.

EDIT: Oh wait that's on PC. :P Forgot about consoles.

Man, do consoles even have Squigly yet? They don't need replays, give PC more stuff.

No, you see, I want to cast other people's replays (easier, more reliable, and less embarassingly forward than asking people on IRC to do it live). That doesn't work with just YouTube. Also, a lot of people mention studying other people replays, which would be loads easier if people are in the habit of uploading replays somewhere than using YouTube.
Wait. Do people even do this? I mean, isn't that like re-streaming someone else's VODs?

The underlined probably won't happen. Most people who do streaming/recording for tournaments make money of the replays on Twitch/YouTube so I don't see them uploading/sharing the replays for this (if they even turn them on during the event).

Yes, people do that. Ken Bogard, the main SF4 french commentator does it all the time at least.
But he does it with vids published on youtube, so I guess it's not exactly the same thing.

But in a smaller community like sg, I think it would be nice to ask the vid owner anyway.

They already have Big Band...

Hmm.. interesting. Never knew that. But then again, the people I tend to work or be involved with aren't the ones who'd let stuff like this slide.

Possible answer is a question : who cares about what a french dude do that only french people watch?
Probably not american nor japanese streamers...

Can someone explain to me how this works, I'm a little confused. Is it like SF4 where you can save a replay and watch it later and give it a title, or is it some upload feature?

Nothing else was specified.

I think it works like this:
GGPO records the button inputs of a match on both sides. If the user so chooses they can save the replay, a file with the recprded inputs and data about character selection. Then the game can replay it by sending said inputs to two dummy cpus, who then reenact the battle for your amusement.

Is that right, Mike?
Also please consider making replay lobbies where players can watch selections from any players collection.

Ya, that's right. Though more like it'd autosave every match (like 3sOE) and then players can go to a screen and choose which ones to keep and the rest will be auto-deleted. It saves having to write an extra confirm thing during matches, heh.

I sincerely doubt this will be a thing, given the amount of work.

i think this would be the best way to do it personally. the main important thing though is to be able to have as many replays as possible auto saved so you can play longer without having to go back to the replay menus to save matches all the time.

i know USF4 will only save the last 10 matches beefore it starts deleting them. i think theres other limits on it too such as only being available in certain modes, all in all its not actually very good.

Could this be done by a third party? Like if someone made some sort of file converter. Would that be difficult? And by third party, I meant like a really really dedicated fan who wanted this to happen.

Anyway, I can't wait for replays. I never bothered with Street Fighter IV's replays. This could make training journals or beginner topics much more involved.

(BTW, how far down the line are reserved teams?)

You mean saving a team so you can quick-select them? We already got those on PC, you press whatever button you have set to macros 1 or 2 and you save the team in the stage select, after that just press the same button to quick select them in the team size window.

Should come with the Eliza update on consoles.

Oh cool. When was that added?

If the replay system works as most others do, they will be saved as very small, essentially text files. To convert that to video would require something that can render all the instructions in the replay file, which is basically making Skullgirls all over again. The best bet for turning replays into videos is someone loading up the replay and hitting their Fraps/dxtory/whatever else button; ideally, someone who can run it at max resolution with 3D backgrounds at 60 FPS.

I wonder if you could save a replay after spectating a match? Because this would make a great concept I could do.

It would seem that'll be case, but that's cool too.

Best part of replays will be looking back at high level play and seeing people mash raw tag all the way from the c.LK to the super.

Every time I fight a guy on PSN that has Fukua in the back I let them out of the combo early on the ground and block to see what happens

Free heavy CH starter combo on Fukua about 95% of the time
It's gr8

Well, in RTS communities they do. People upload the replays and other people (such as myself) record the game being replayed and add commentary. Sometimes for entertainment, other times for review and teaching, sometimes both. No one has had a problem with me doing it so far, and your comment is the first that I've ever seen in opposition to this idea.

The stream is going to be the big thing. After that anyone casting those games will be casting something out of date. Unless they are doing it for Day[9] style analysis I doubt it will come up meaningfully.

I'm guessing you're also going to do something similar to PIKACHUAKUMA when it comes to Ultra Street Fighter, record replays of top players and simply them together in a video. Something I would love to do if it's possible to replay "share".

Hm... I do hope they add replays, but call them something else, which they'll probably end up doing if added.
Maybe something like flicks, or re-releases, or something similar to that manner.

No, I'd be commentating them as if they were live.

Oh man, is JR still around?!
Always xD still plays 3rd Strike showing off Double Perfects, still plays Ultra, and post replays of the pros and top players.

I kind of want to do the same with Skullgirls depending on how you do the replay system.

I come from the Starcraft community, not having some central server to upload replays is not a game breaker. But being able to share matches, and go over them with a fine toothed comb (like with something like slow them down, or go over the numbers with a training mode interface) would be absolutely amazing. Also, it would kill "I lost without being able to do anything".

External tools can fill the void of missing features and data analysis, which is probably way beyond the scope of what is probably needed ingame. Making the file format easy to read (as in fairly strait forward, and not encrypted) would be a god send.

Oh, well yeah, of course that. It's currently just an INI that sets up the fight and a series of p1-p2 inputs as binary. There's no reason to make it more complicated. :^P

The issue is that alot of these guys who do streams nowadays make money from views on either Youtube or Twitch. Not everyone is able to be like Level Up who makes decent amount of money from sponsorship. It becomes even more complicated once companies like Twitch and Nico Nico start to come in grab exclusivity rights.

So we would be able to, in theory, modify/create a replay file to make some TAS combos, right? It'd take ungodly amounts of guess and check, of course, but with enough patience we could potentially see some really off the wall shit.

Yeah, but someone would have to make find a way to make the binary display of the inputs human-readable. I would hate to see what a normal combo looks like dumped into an ini file just by itself...
Although I think it would be fun messing around with a hex editor on said ini file to try and work out what "P1 held neutral for 20 frames", "P1 LP held down for 5 frames" and "P1 LP released" would be.

doing it for Day[9] style analysis

I came. This would be something I'd watch week in and week out. Add to this the idea of doing "Funday Mondays" and "Newbie Tuesdays"... we'd have real community building tools here.
