Shantae Series

They're both pretty great. Shantae GBC is very cool. You hear that it pushed the GBC's hardware and you're like "whatever" but then the lighting effects totally blindside you. In the first dungeon I spent like 5 minutes jumping in and out of lightbeams because it's just so neat.
Good. I've sent in $2,500 to them so far.
Awesome. I wish I could afford to give that much. Best I could do is drop all my pre-orders for the rest of the year and dump it all on Shantae. It gets me the physical art book so that's pretty good! It's weird but I find myself spending more time playing cheap, short games than $60 AAA titles. Only game I might actually miss not getting right away is Donkey Kong Country TF.

That's why I just wait til the price drops. I won't miss out and I can get the game for a good low price. My price ranges from $30 and below on any title.

Yeah, I really should adopt that rule. There are only select few games that I would gladly pay for right away. Really the only thing that was taking a lot of money was the WWHD because I kind of wanted the figure.
Then Shantae came along.

Oh yeah, aand Pirate's Curse comes out sometime this year.
So you can have THREE SHantae games on one device!
That also means WayForward is working not on one Shantae game, but TWO!
Double Shantae 2 Weeks EVER!

I just remembered something. The one unfortunate thing about the original Shantae from the eShop is that you can't get the transformation that you can only get when playing the game on a Game Boy Advance. It's a small downside though.

Planning to get all three.
I'd say the first one is worth it, but I haven't played it.
Seems like it's the bee's knees though!

When you say that the original version is 'worth it', do you mean 'worth the time to play it', or 'worth the $200-300 that the GB carts sell for'?

He could mean it's worth the eShop price.

Next weekend, I am going to donate $15 for this project. I already donated $20 for Mighty No.9.

Huh, just noticed that the GBC game is the staff pick of the week, considering the Kickstarter announcement I think that it's pretty appropriate. =p
Just watched a trailer for the game on the eshop and everyone who mentioned the art/graphics/animation and all that, wow, you guys weren't kidding.
Screw it, i'm gonna download it right now. =p

Next Update.

Work on Shantae's character design is continuing at a brisk pace. We're presently trying out some new color palettes for the main sprite. Our engine uses a nifty "additive lighting" effect, which can make her look cool & luminous by night, or warm & vibrant by day. This is still a work-in-progress... check it out!

Today was a good day.

Featuring the lighting system this early on was a smart move, otherwise we're gonna have people seeing screenshots of her skin in different lights and start complaining that her skin tone isn't what they want.

Although this is the internet so we'll probably gonna have people do that anyway....

Ah, I'll miss the first design. it made the red in her outfit and her hair seem darker. I liked it. but tan Shantae is good as well.

A good question is who doesn't love a good ole' tanned lady?
Seriously I love tan skin in video game designs sometimes.

I like both dark and light skinned ladies. >u>
but again, I liked it when her clothes and hair looked darker because of the skin.

Shrug. Well it's been 10+ years, I think the new design is great.
The Long Ears to the side in particular add a large degree of cuteness and mysticism I think

Before I really join this thread and talk about how excited I am for this game, can someone help me understand what's going on with Shantae's genie pants?

Like I understand what's going on in the first one, and the second I kind of get, but the third one is beyond my comprehension. What is the black part? Is it tight like underwear? Were does it start and end? How is the main red part connected? How does the solid gold connect? Is the gold one big piece that circles behind her waist or two pieces? Is the gold holding it all up? Is the whole thing one piece?

I know this is a stupid thing to be thinking about but it's really been bugging me.

I've been watching the Kickstarter video frame by frame and I am slowly starting to get it.

Speaking as someone who's played the previous games, I didn't mind how pale they made Shantae in this one, but after seeing the color study, I have to agree that she looks better with the tan.

I wonder how far they're willing to go with Risky's mode. Granted, I'm positive her mode will just be a "what if" scenario, but I wonder just how dark her ending could be. Unless they have Shantae somehow succeed anyway, kind of like in Maverick Hunter X with
Vile's ending.

The third design was based on the second design, so that should answer a few of your questions. The black area is the tight fitted part, and the gold is really just for flare now. Here are a couple image grabs I found that might kinda show what they were going for:

It is an interesting change, but it probably helps make the waist easier to animate, while still having the gold to accentuate her classic hip movements. I know some people have been turned off by the new look, but I really like how they've simplified Shantae's design and pushed some of the more iconic aspects of the character, such as the pants and hair shapes. Once the tan's finalized I'll be pretty sold on the whole look.

OK after careful study and analysis I am finally able to comprehend the new genie pants, I really like them now.

More importantly I am really excited for this game, despite the fact that I've never played a Shantae game or even a WayForward game. I only learned about the franchise recently and I've been really interested because the games just looked so good. I'm a sucker for games that are visually appealing and I really like it when developers appreciate that a game that works well should look good too.
Since I'm a student athlete I don't have time for a job so I have to be very careful with my money. So sorry I can't donate right now. I might throw a bit of money their way later but it's not certain.

I'm really psyched that WayForward decided to go the route of hand drawn 2D animation and environments, it's arguably the best looking way to make a game. I hope they have a Mac port when it comes out on Steam because I am definitely going to pick it up when it comes out. I'm also glad they changed Shantae's skin tone back, changing her race was kind of an iffy move in my opinion.

Anyway, I plan on playing the original Shantae in response to this.

Is it bad that I never found Shantae's skin tone change racist? I look at it from a more creative sense. It's not my place to say what a character's coloration (skintone included) should be. plus, I never really considered Shantae had a race since she's half human and half genie, so I thought her race was always something that would be undecided, seeing as we dont know who her parents are (as far as I know). but I am not saying she can't be.

also, I thought she had a natural suntan considering she seemed to have darkened since her GBC game, and her DSi game. which only added to my assumption that her own racial background never seemed to be set in stone.

and it seems her world doesnt take place in india, since some of the towns have other cultures too: greek pillars, the Romanian-esque cart rotty-tops lives in, the long fields that the scarecrows reside in.

the more I try to explain why I never thought Shantae had a race the more I feel like I'm being viewed as racist.....

1. Changing an established characters race and preferring one over the other, even in the name of art or creativity, is a touch racist. Also saying that Shantae doesn't have a race because she's half genie is like saying Blade doesn't have a race because he's half vampire.

2. Just because a real world place doesn't exist in a fictional universe doesn't mean the races pertaining to those places don't exist. Forgive my bluntness but Isaac, Roxie, and Big Band are still black even though there's no Africa in the SkullGirls universe. Therefore Shantae is still arabian even though there's no Arabia in Sequin Land. Also I'm sure everyone would be pissed if Alex suddenly decided to make Isaac latino, so why should it be any different for Shantae?

3. I don't know why you would just assumed she's tanned, but I don't see the darkening you're talking about.
Also Just some information for the future. Genies are an Arabian thing, not Indian.

Shantae has always been arabian or something like it, so to make her white simply because of preference is kind of an insult to racial equality.

Also no one here thinks that you're racist Sano. I agree, red does look really good on white people.
However, it's no excuse to prefer one race over another.

But damn does Isaac rock that waistcoat or what?
TBH, I never said I preferred one race over another, and I don't think WayForward gave that impression either. It looks like they didn't even notice if you ask me.

I still wish we could have both designs...

I do want to add though that I love her coloration at night. and the way Zeriam's post describes how her skin looks between day and night. its a shame that the red looks more violet though.... red is my favorite color.
