Shin Megami Tensei and Persona

i just think it's crazy that Persona has one game where you be fuckin' gay and it's the one that came out in 19-goddamn-99 and not the one that came out in 20-fuckin'-16
The irony of the current culture of gaming is that a lot of things people say you can't do were done decades ago. Now stuff like canon gay relationships are still niche and it doesn't help that it also happened in a niche JRPG on the PS1 but it happened.

Luckily Tatsuya has a way more detailed past and web of established relationships than the other protags but a backstory isnt a personality and context isnt characterization.
Funny enough I've never found Tatsuya's silence to be absolute. And I think he gets characterized by how others react to him because like you say, he's established in this town. Perhaps I'm having his personality from EP bleed over into my memory of IS but even if he was quiet I had an idea of his "voice" if that makes sense. I got his general demeanor from the opening scenes and acted according to what others pointed out about his past actions.

Plus the game does a good job of giving him flavor text options like in the Demon Negotiations that further contextualize him. But yeah, still silent.

Tatsuya being bi makes sense just like being a silent protagonist. His backstory and behavior kinda helps build it.

So it's something organically integrated, not a ham fisted diversity checklist like some games today

Interesting tidbit about the weird pronunciations of Sakamoto and Kitagawa (aka suhkom'toe and kihtawg'wuh)

oh is this not a thing people know about?
the japanese clients dictate stuff like that all the time. It's basically how they think it sounds best to their ears.

I always assumed this was a thing because of the Street Fighter announcers and how they pronounce Zangief.

It goes back pretty far, even stuff like the old Resident Evil dubs are mostly because of japanese voice directors using the takes they liked best, even if it sounded silly or bad to the actual english speaking audience.
it was the best-sounding or "cool" take to the japanese execs.

those innocent japanese execs could never know what the brutal americans want out of their voice performances

plus bad voiceover in horror games is the same as bad acting in B-horror movies, part of the charm

Yeah, I knew the Resident Evil stuff, if I recall they even just spliced takes together.

Any predictions/hopes for tomorrows stream? I want Aegis Rim news and the 3DS anniversary project to be SMT I and II remakes. No idea what to actually expect.

Some sort of sequel/expansion/remake to Strange Journey confirmed called Deep Strange Journey

So we're ditching the Demonica?

It is in fact an enhanced remake of SJ. Fully voice acted, new ending/path featuring that new lady (named Alex), improvements all around. Neat.

RIP those faces though, especially Jimenez.

SJ is cool I guess, between that and Radiant Historia I guess it's nice to know there is some reason to keep a 3DS around.

Oh god, I just saw the art, what the fuck?

Kaneko truly has abandoned us, hasn't he?

"Easier to play"
"Doi art instead of Kaneko art"
"New maximum anime girl that doesn't fit the game at all"

Figures that Atlus can't even do a remake of Strange Journey correctly without Kaneko to keep the atmosphere in tact.

Might as well rename the game "Balls Deep with Edgy Yukiko"

Okay , I'm not even gonna attempt to have a conversation about that first point, but,

Doi's art is good. Kaneko probably might not want to do human art, and Doi has always been good at being a good artist for the SMT games.

And the new girl looks like she fits in. She looks like she stepped right out of Soul Hackers.

yes

and that was Soul Hackers.

This is Strange Journey. Two different beasts

well, I made a thing that does sum up the reactions I've seen from this announcement.

As someone who doesn't know fuck all about Strange Journey she looks really out of place.

Yeah, this sure is good art. Better make MSpaint memes about how anyone who says otherwise is elitist.

I completely don't see any problem with the new designs at all
also, this is just my general viewpoint. not just here, twitter too.
like, Persona seems super hyped about it, regardless.
intact is one word, you loser
thank you. fixed it.

The game just didn't need a remake tbh. Feels like a cash in.

New Girl especially doesn't fit because she's not wearing a fucking demonica, or at least wearing a stylizied/altered one. Gives off a kind of "special snowflake" vibe in the context of the rest of the uniformed cast.

I think a remake is fine. all of the Devil Survivors got one and those are the definitive ways to play them.
so if the improvements to them are as good as the ones for DS, I'll be a happy camper.
I love Strange Journey, and more of it is music to my ears.

Gore's face and Jimenez's hair both being made out of plastic now isn't a problem? The overall removal of detail is a good thing?

Come on. I'm perfectly willing to reserve judgment on the rest, I don't have a problem with more SJ (though I would have preferred older games, particularly ones that didn't get localized or were only localized on iOS) but what they've shown in this regard looks like ass.

anyways imo the new/updated designs are like if New Dad took Old Dad's skin and wore it like a suit and tries to act like nothing is different. They aren't too different at a glance but the more i look the more it looks weird to me.
Shame too because SJ's original art is like pinnacle Kaneko to me and it has some of my favorite designs in the franchise (Mother Maya~)

Nukiko also definitely looks out of place, but I'm betting she'll just be revealed to be some demon or something so w/e

well, the SG discord seems to enjoy it, so....
I guess we're just at an impasse.

Those feel a bit more "logical" to me. Like (DS1, at least) gave you the option to go for routes that you should have been able to go for but couldn't in the original.

Felt more like Dark Souls where the artorious area was content that was originally planned to be a crucial part of the game but didn't make it in time.

Strange Journey on the other hand is a pretty air-tight, self contained scenario. Adding in a new character in order to give a new scenario feels like shoe-horning to me. But eh, maybe it'll be okay.

Breaking off topic for a bit, should I get Soul Hackers for the 3DS on sale?

I would like to point out Maniax is a great precedent for optimism in this case. Not saying this will go well, just saying it went pretty great last time.

Yeah, it's excellent, though short.

the D.S. games also added full voice acting(to the point where the cartridge used for the game was pretty much full), so yes please.
Atlus for the most part has some pretty good dubbing on their in-house games and the DS titles were all well cast.

I'm waiting in delight for what corner if Strange Journey's world Amanda Winn-Lee will appear in
