The past Saturday had the Lab Zero team gathered together at Anime Expo 2014 to share their views on Skullgirls' past, present, and what's to come. From the struggles of making the baritone behemoth Big Band, to working out the final touches on SG's newest character Eliza, to preparing for future characters Beowulf and Robo-Fortune, Lab Zero were happy to share their experiences and answer questions in a panel alongside an auditorium of fans.

Newcomer Eliza and her skeletal parasite Sekhmet were shown off in full force, with Mike and team demoing their extensive moveset, concept art, Eliza's newly-implemented voice, and even an image from their story mode. Art director Alex Ahad gave exposition clarifying her part in Skullgirls' extensive lore, while gameplay designer and programmer Mike Zaimont explained her role as a new character with a unique arsenal of tools at her disposal. Eliza's segment of the panel concluded with the news that Lab Zero intends to release Eliza some time after EVO 2014.

Wrestling/android fans rejoice: New information on upcoming DLC characters Beowulf and Robo-Fortune was divulged during Skullgirls' panel! New concept art has been released of Beowulf, Skullgirls' resident giant-maiming wrestler. With the LZ team claiming to have studied countless wrestling moves in preparation for his concept brainstorming, Mike Z expressed his own gameplay aspirations for Beowulf by wishing for him to be somewhat similar to Marvel vs. Capcom 2's Captain America; a character who wields a shield (in Beowulf's case, his trusty folding chair) which can be utilized in several different ways. Beowulf is due to be released in the months after Eliza.

Not to be left in the dust, Lab Zero shed light on Robo-Fortune, a robotic doppelganger forged in the image of Ms. Fortune. As a clone character, Robo-Fortune is to reuse animation frames from Ms. Fortune, much like Fukua reused frames from Filia. However, Robo-Fortune is much more distinct in appearance than Fukua was to Filia, meaning any reused Ms. Fortune frames would have to be edited before reuse.

Seen above are several different color maps for Robo-Fortune, and one from Ms. Fortune as a reference. C, E, and G represent Robo-Fortune in various stages of complexity; concerned that complex iterations of Robo-Fortune's design might have proven prohibitively expensive to edit over existing frames, C and E served as "budget" fallbacks to be used in the event that G (the most complex version) would have been too expensive to work with. After measuring the amount of time taken to convert a Ms. Fortune frame to both C, E, and G, Lab Zero decided that the extra cost in going with G wasn't prohibitively higher than its less glamorous cousins.

Also unveiled were early severed head concepts, Robo-Fortune's voice actor (Kimlinh Tran, the voice of Ms. Fortune), and several audience-rousing palette concepts (courtesy of Jon). Robo-Fortune is slated to be released in the months after Beowulf.

A big thanks to @Mike_Z, @render, Vince, Mariel, @EU03, @Persona, Alex, Rich, Erin, @Kimlinh Tran, and Danielle for taking the time out of their day to meet up at this panel!

what does Robo look like by default though?

Article says they will be going with G.

Great to hear news on Beowulf and Robo, but where's Beo's new concept art?

It's in the video. It's a camcorder recording, so unfortunately the quality wouldn't really be appropriate for a news article.

maybe?

Even though her final colors are undecided, here's a quick crummy mockup of how design G looks with her trading card colors.

For anyone who wants a more stationary look at the Robo variations:

As said in the article, they made several versions of Robo to check how much it would cost to animate her.
G is the desired design while C and E are quicker and thus cheaper variants. After they tested out altering some of Fortune's sprites LZ decided it didn't cost that much more to go with the more complex G, so that'll be design they're running with.

Those are all some remarkably crisp quality art assets... *stares inquisitively*

Errr, I mean - great article! Very well put summary of the panel. <:3

Robo-F is shaping up nicely. Good amount of design deviations from Fortune and the brainstorming concepts we got to glance showed things that strayed very far from what Nadia can do.

I just gotta say that concept of beowulf bursting though an invisible background with the surprised backstage staff is amazing.

reminds me of faust's teleport doors.

Also it's interesting how Robo-C has a mono-boob, but Robo-G has two fully independent breasts. Technology at its best.
Two boobs? Way too expensive, better go with one boob. Robo-C is on a tight budget.

So...... R.Fortune gonna be like Robo Ky right? same atacks redrawed to look mechanic and obviosly a slighly diferent mechachics?

I hope she doesn't use the same head mechanic as fortune.

Oh my god @Mike_Z i totally heard that comment you made about robo looking like she was wearing a varia suit. i would totally main the shit out of robo if she had that palette (tbh i was going to anyway lol). i may even consider picking up parasoul just so i can run team samus with her justin bailey palette.

man im actually more excited for a palette colour atm than anything else lol.

It has been stated before. No head mechanic.

Would use that Aigis pallet if it makes the cut into the game. Orgia Mode mechanic with Megiddo Fire loops confirmed?

Painwheel already has two different sentinel palettes so I doubt Robo will get one.

I'm not saying she will get pallets but speculating that she is a robot..and Mike wants someone with sentinal drones at some point...it's probably not going to be the wrasslin viking.

Awesome, I've always wanted to use fortune but her head mechanic is way too intimidating.

Hi, all the Robo-Fortune palettes shown were mine, thanks gbye

Thank you, you beautiful person, you! S2

She has to use the head mechanic, otherwise whats the point?
That said, nobody said it cant function completely different by using the same art assets in different and wonderful ways. Just imagine what all the Nom Nom Nom sprites could be used for.

There's a million things you can do with a character that can detach their limbs at will without resorting to a head puppet.

plus robots..

relevent

anyone with half decent photoshop skills want to make an all white template for use with custom pallettes? im in the process myself but itll probably be really bad quality since im a PS noob. im using the most complex version of her.

.

erm, to not have two characters that have the same mechanic?

Even sticking just to head mechanics, it could be a less micromanaged version of the mechanic, like comparing Blazblue's Carl Clover to Relius Clover, but even if you somehow consider that "same-y" you can just go crazy with it.

It's be hilarious to see Robo-Fortunes head spin around her like this in idle:

Imagine a head dropping explosives behind itself or something with a similar nature to this move:

omg the kid asking if george is going to be his own character.
I'm dying.

Gave it a go. Posted the result in the fan palettes thread here.

thannks for the template muro. much better than the one i was doing.

So Robo-Fortune is Samus? Gotta' have a move where she removes one hand to use the resulting wrist-stub as an arm-cannon.

Also, because of this:
Imagine a head dropping explosives behind itself...
Morph Ball head.

Samus: Bounty hunter.
Nadia Fortune: Criminal with a bounty on her head. :PUN: (Sorry. So sorry.)

So, Robo-Fortune: Bounty hunter who is hunting Nadia?

I wasn't so sure about Robo-Fortune before, but after seeing the handling of Fukua and all the new possibilities, I probably will not be disappointed.

Gravity suit color scheme is superior.

In general, I am excited for what is going to happen in the future. I cannot wait to see what Eliza has planned in her story mode...I am sure it will be excellent.
