By now most of you may have heard that the PS3 and 360 versions of Skullgirls on consoles will be temporarily delisted from XBL and PSN game library as a result of Lab Zero separating from former publisher Konami. Lab Zero has updated us all on their Twitter account about what is happening for the console version of Skullgirls with answers to common questions on their website. Below is what is happening to the respective consoles/regions as the game evolves into Skullgirls Encore. [prebreak][/prebreak]

XBL-Vs.-PSN.jpg
US PSN

- All PSN purchasers of the original release of Skullgirls will receive Skullgirls Encore free, similar to a PS3/PS4/Vita Cross-Buy

- To download Skullgirls Encore, players will just need to visit the Skullgirls Encore store page and download it

- Squigly’s character DLC will be released at the same time, and will be free for a period of three months, and will only be compatible with Skullgirls Encore

- Skullgirls Encore will effectively be a “new” and distinct game from the original release

- The original Skullgirls DLC will not compatible with Skullgirls Encore

- So that no one loses their previous purchases and also to thank everyone for their patience during this transition, the character color DLC bundle will be free for everyone for a limited time

- Because Skullgirls Encore is effectively a new game, Skullgirls Encore will have fresh leaderboards, you’ll have a new set of trophies to go for, and your previous save data will not be compatible

- At the time of the transition we will be phasing out the individual character color packs and will only be offering the character color bundle moving forward

- The Character Color Bundle DLC will unlock additional colors for all existing characters, as well as Squigly and all future characters

- Players will still be able to download the original version of Skullgirls from their PSN Downloads list and play it, but we recommend that everyone transition to Skullgirls Encore as soon as possible. And you want Squigly, too, right?

EU PSN

- The EU transition may take a little longer than the US transition, but we’re working to minimize any time difference

- All PSN purchasers of the original release of Skullgirls will receive Skullgirls Encore free, similar to a PS3/PS4/Vita Cross-buy

- To download Skullgirls Encore, players will just need to visit the Skullgirls Encore store page and download it

JP PSN

- The JP transition may take a little longer than the US transition, but we’re working with Cyberfront to minimize any time difference

XBLA Worldwide

- While the game will disappear from the Xbox Live Marketplace for a period of time, the publisher transition from Konami to MarvelousAQL should be pretty transparent to players

- MarvelousAQL can’t submit the new build until after the holidays, so the game will be unavailable on the store while the patch is in testing, but will still be playable online

- When the game’s transition is complete, there will be a title update and a new mandatory Compatibility Pack DLC, just as there was with the previous update

- Unlike with the PSN version, Skullgirls Encore will be a patched version of the original game, not a separate product

- This means that the leaderboards, achievements and save data will be unaffected by this transition

- Previously purchased DLC will still be compatible with Skullgirls Encore

- To thank everyone for their patience during this transition, the character color DLC bundle will be free for everyone for a limited time

- Squigly will be available (and free) at this point as well, so be sure to download her immediately!

- At the same time this publisher transition is complete, MarvelousAQL will enable Japanese XBLA sales of Skullgirls Encore

For those out of the loop as well, a quick summary was also posted to give readers a trip down memory lane to explain why this is happening to begin with.

  • Autumn Games signs Skullgirls with Reverge Labs

  • Autumn Games is required to sign a publishing agreement with a major publisher in order to acquire an XBLA slot for the game, and decides to extend its existing publishing agreement for DefJam Rapstar with Konami

  • DefJam Rapstar is released just after the music game crash, and doesn’t perform to expectations

  • City National Bank sues Konami and Autumn Games for not paying back the loan taken out to finance DefJam Rapstar

  • City National Bank’s claim on Autumn’s income scares away potential investors, making it impossible to raise money or sell the IP to another publisher that could continue funding development

  • Due to a lack of funding, Autumn Games cancels production on Squigly in June 2012, resulting in the layoff of most of the Skullgirls staff from Reverge Labs

  • The laid off Skullgirls staff reform as Lab Zero, Inc. and continue its work on Skullgirls with Autumn Games’ blessing, releasing the first patch, “Slightly Different Edition”

  • Lab Zero begins seeking other projects to develop, but it’s slow and the team is running out of money

  • In a last-ditch move to keep the team together, Lab Zero starts an Indiegogo campaign to fund Skullgirls DLC characters, and raises over $830,000, enough for 5 total characters developed over the course of around 16 months

  • The first IGG-funded DLC character Squigly is released alongside the Steam PC version of Skullgirls

  • Development of the console patch begins immediately after the PC version is released

  • Testing is completed on the console patch a few weeks later by independent testing house Digital Hearts

  • Konami and Autumn Games settle their lawsuit out of court

  • Konami refuses to submit the patch unless they also fully test it, at great expense to Lab Zero

  • Autumn Games severs its distribution arrangement with Konami to clear the way for the IGG-funded DLC patches

  • Autumn signs an agreement with MarvelousAQL to provide a replacement slot for the XBLA version

  • Konami moves to have Skullgirls delisted on PSN as of 12/17/2013, which we find out about from Sony while starting the transition

  • Konami agrees to delay the delisting until 12/31/2013 on PSN

Great to hear more updates on this situation since many of us played the console version since the beginning. The PC version is no way at all involved with this so you can rest easy with that PC gamers. We will let you know if any more developments happen with this story.

I was gonna be all like "HAVE YOU GUYS SEEN THIS YET?" But I'm but a crummy turtle Parasoul not a speedy Valentine. (.__.)

Anyway, very good summary. Concise and straight to the point. Separating the issues per region was a great call as well.
Alas...
- The EU transition may take a little longer than the US transition, but we’re working to minimize any time difference
Where have my European ears heard that one before? -_-"

Pretty great news all around. It will probably be disappointing to a few people that their Leaderboard placements will be meaningless for the PSN Version of Skullgirls, but at least the patch will be coming out more efficiently now that Konami is out of the way.

That was a great and elaborate write up. Thanks for taking the time to write it, Lab Zero ^,^

Kind of curious since it seems like there are often little updates to the PC version; even when Encore hits the consoles, are they pretty much going to be perpetually behind the PC version with how often it's updated, or will they generally stay pretty up to date?

Oh thank the heavens

Incredible news all around.
Glad to hear we won't need to repurchase.
But it's also reassuring to know the future of the game isn't as bleak as it looked before.

It takes a minimum of 2 weeks (real 2 weeks not SG "two weeks") to pass a console update through first-party testing.
Console will get one update per new DLC character, and that update will bring it on par with the PC version at that time.
When everything's done, they should be in the same condition with regards to gameplay.

Gotcha, thanks; my main concern was if we get back to doing tourneys on console because they're a bit easier if we'd be constantly making people play something vastly different than what's current. 2 weeks to push a patch through is actually better than I expected.

so the konami delisting debacle.... blessing in disguise?

Nah, because if Konami just approved the patch the first time instead of pulling this, you'd be playing something close to the PC version months ago.

yeah, but at the same time no more money problems and no more having to go through another company before the online stores can review the patches.

Bless you Lab Zero.

Other developers would have given hope long ago but you always make a comeback.

This is wonderful news!

Sorry if I sound stupid for asking, but I have a New Zealand PSN & I was wondering how this would affect me. Would the rules of the EU PSN apply or something else?

as far as console are we gonna get mde or the current pc patch for it?

Sounds like good news to me, as long as Squigly the new stages and etc etc finally come to console I'm hyped.

Cool, I'm alright without lobbies. At least I won't have to play on my pixelated laptop anymore

um, with this new encore update, the game won't recognize my joystick on the qanba q4 raf...=\

This is great news!

However, the "haters" on GameFAQ's are already attacking this, saying that it's more proof that Lab 0 lied, that we were suckered, and that we were dumb for donating.

So, basically, GameFAQ's is being hateful and immature.

Like they always are.

IM hype. Cant wait for patch release.

GameFAQs is hating....why were getting the patch aren't we whats to be hating on about it?

You know, I would like it if someone else beside's me tried setting those people on the Fighting game board straight.

I mean, I really don't like seeing the game's reputation get dragged in the dirt, and its not exactly a one man job...

GameFAQs isn't that influential is it? If they can't be assed to read the timeline or any explanation posted over the past several weeks, there's no hope for them.

GameFAQs is hating....why were getting the patch aren't we whats to be hating on about it?
Well, there are many stupid reasons why.

Reason 1: "They didn't mention this during the Indiegogo campaign, so they were obviously trying to cheat us from the beginning!"
Reason 2: "The fact that they said that it's no surprise that this happened means that they knew that this was going to happen a long time ago, and that means that they lied!"
Reason 3: "The whole fundraiser made no sense! Why did we even have to donate at all? Why didn't Lab 0 just get new investors? Why were investors scared off by the legal issues the game was having? Lab 0 is obviously trying to cover up the fact that Skullgirls didn't sell well, and that's the reason they needed the fundraiser."

If none of those reasons make any sense to you, then don't worry, because they don't make any sense.

At all.

1. They read the timeline. They just like twisting the things written in the timeline to try to make it look like Lab 0 is a band of thieves.
2. Some people take the opinions of that site seriously, and I don't want people thinking that Lab 0 is some horrible group of liars.

....I think those..."reasons" just made me lose brain cells...

As incorrect as they may be (and they are), I'm not certain it would be worth the effort to correct them. Ignorance and stubbornness can go a long way, and it is more than likely that those that are loud enough to make these complains noticed are going to be unreasonable, even if one or more of us were to explain the issues.

But honestly... wow, those "reasons" are really bad.

EDIT: I do have a (stupid) question - given that Encore is going to be a "new game", can I delete the original after downloading it?
(Starting to run low on HDD space, every bit counts.)

For the PSN version, yes, it looks like you will be able to delete the original. Encore, according to the post, will be a stand-alone title.

When was GameFAQ's opinion ever relevant lol? They lose out I don't care. I'll just enjoy the game with the other people that haven't bleached their brains yet.

Well, some people take their opinions seriously. And I hate seeing the reputation of Skullgirls get dragged through the ground.

So... now that CyberFront appears to be sinking, what's going to happen over in Japan? Will MAQL become the publisher yet again?

Hey guys just need a little bit of help. Where is Launch Options so I can input the -psdriverhack line?

I have a question that is probably gonna sound dumb, but I will ask it anyway:

When exactly will Encore be coming out?

I believe they said that it will be coming out mid January.
