Skullgirls, it turns out, is the best fighting game ever. At least according to the poll that recently concluded on SRKs front page. In the end, it turned out to be a fight between Skullgirls and BlazBlue, and the end margin was razor thin. Thanks to all those that voted!

Fighting Game of the Year


To say Skullgirls and the folks behind it at Lab Zero Games had a tumultuous 2013 would be a gross understatement. But, despite the numerous curve balls thrown their way, they persevered with continuous updates to the PC version of their popular indie fighter and the release of their very first downloadable character, Squigly. The openness of the developers has certainly endeared them to their zealous community and the game has only gotten better because of it.

Much like they did for the highly-successful Indiegogo campaign, the fans of the little fighting game that could came out in droves to help push Skullgirls Encore to the top of the poll, barely edging out Arc System Works’ BlazBlue: Chronophantasma.

Far be it from me to try to guess what SRK/EVO is going to do, but if for some reason they don't want SG there then they can always just wait for SCR and then say 'Sorry, we want to try to avoid [insert inevitable issue at SCR because of huge game roster]'. I'm not saying I think they hate us or anything, but they may have reasons to choose other games instead.

I think you're totally wrong, but this isn't the place to talk about this.

This is a happy time, it's these little things that add up to the success of a video game and it's developers.
It may not make much of a difference but I think it symbolizes a bright future for Lab Zero.

okay then dude whatever. doesnt matter the fact i made a substantial donation to the IGG campaign, or went to evo 2 years running ONLY to play this game, or the fact i take SG to meetups every fucking week to my locals and try to get people to play or at least educate them about any misconceptions they may have. obviously im not doing enough to try and support this game so fuck me right?

Oy now is not the time to claw at each other throats over something like this. It's fine if some people here aren't particularly hyped about this accomplishment since valid points are being brought up, but being negative doesn't make the position any better either in contrast.

The way I see it is SRK gave the game some free positive advertisement and with the site traffic it typically generates that is nothing to scoff at. If at least one anon lurker on that site decided to give this game a legit shot (even briefly) then we are already better off then we were before the poll.

That is what truly matters in the long run. Baby steps, it all adds up if we looked back since a year ago. Let's just bask in the moment and play the game as usual regardless.

i think its great that SG got best fighting game, i just dont think its really going to get more people playing the game is all, which is what SG really needs right now. i guess my original message was a bit of a downer but ive far from given up on this game. once console patch drops ill be all over this shit just you wait. my local scene is gonna feel it too lol.

13 got here before I did. Yes, the most important thing we need to do is turn up for events of all sizes and make sure that new players aren't turned off by low turnouts or arrogant 'real players'. But this thread is about SG being voted the best game of the year, and that makes today a good day.
