So I was just thinking in my thinking chair with my handy dandy notebook about potentially making a Skullgirls spin off game that takes place at Filia's highschool (In Maple Crest) with cool and quirky characters also seen in the regular game. With different races like monsters, cyborgs you know just to make the game stand out currently I'm trying to find a fighting game engine that I can use to develop it but in the meantime i'll be posting concept art, Story ideas etc. here. If any of you have good ideas for Stages, Characters, Title anything at all! Just comment here and I will write it down for future reference! :P

Wait, so you're making a fighting game based on Skullgirls about Filia's school? I'm sorry, am I getting this right? Well Fukua, Filia, Painwheel confirmed. Might as well throw in that Gigan girl in the background of Maplecrest and the legendary dog who still needs to learn to manipulate sand (see Fukua trailer) and you'll be good to go!

Mugen never fails mah friend.
On a serious note, this is pretty rough. Hell, this is rougher than my fighting game at it's onset! Might wanna give us a few more details as to what you have gameplay wise and anything else you really have.

Why would you spin off a fighting game with quirky characters from an already excellent fighting game with quirky characters? I'd be interested in a Skullgirls spin off, but more if it branched out into another similar but different genre (ie beat em up, hack and slash, adventure, etc.)

I can't really think of a reason to make a fighting game spin off of sg when you could just add such characters to the main game instead.

I mean, if it was a simple fighter, or like Skullgals the amazing joke.

A beat em up would cool, though.

I was thinking like original characters along with characters seen in the background of the Maple Crest stage near filia's highschool and gameplay wise? I was gonna try make it more like 16 bitish like Street Fighter 2 or something along those lines.

Well it may sound like just a reskin of Skullgirls it is actually gonna have an original story surrounding the Highschool students and the "Arena" that occurs every year within it's walls.

If story is the only difference, why does it need to be a separate fighting game? Might as well just be a visual novel or an expansion pack to normal SG's story mode. Skullgirls is already an insanely good fighting game with a unique vision behind it, if someone were to make another game set in the same universe, I'd prefer for it to do something that SG doesn't already do.

I mean, I understand that this is a fighting game forum and people love fighters, but if story is your concern, I don't see why you'd have to limit yourself to fighting games for exploring this universe. Especially when the main fighting game installment is pretty definitive in terms of both gameplay and story.

I mean I like shmups, but I'm also super excited to learn the A* Star Algorithm so I can start making turn based and real time strategy games.

It honestly sounds like it could be a good beat em' up. Last skullgal standing, eh? A bunch of levels masquerading as rounds of this arena? Sounds cool ta me.

EDIT: I've said beat em' up 3 times now, so I'll shut up until I have something actually constructive to say, sorry.

I dunno if you saw this, but this is an alpha stage idea you could use. Maybe add a crowd or have an empty version with a side character spectating.

Oh wow this is so cool! thanks I will certaintly use this alpha stage in game change the environment abit and add some spectators maybe add some trash cans to use to hurt your enemy.

Heh. Adding stage hazards and interactivity? intriguing. If I find anything else worth mentioning, I'll be sure to post it here right away.

A beat em up would be great half the characters already playstyles would work great for a beat em up.

I believe the current idea is to make a more interactive fighter that's simpler than SG. His idea may have changed, but that's the vibe I'm currently getting from what we know of he idea.

Well due to a lot of you saying that a beat em up would certaintly be more interesting I'm leaning more onto that side and make the game a double dragon ish kind of beat em up but with the Original characters or the official characters.

Well in that case, I can still see many fighting game elements being incorporated. I think a few officials characters (Filia and Carol, maybe Fukua and Annie or something as secret characters) though the majority would be original characters.

Well the secret characters might be the ones that fans wanted to see the most like Annie, Umbrella or Minette to name a few. Might even give Umbrella a move where she throws salt lol but I'm not sure.

There was this one gif...I don't remember where I found it or who made it, but it was a salt grenade thrown by Umbrella, so I'd say it fits :D

Speaking of gameplay (which we weren't really), given the style of SG, I'd suggest trying out or at least looking at a beat em' up tat takes a number of inspirations from fighters. It's called Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds. It might be a good reference in some ways. Though the whole multiple planes thing is dumb and I wouldn't recmmend it for this idea. It's s steam game. I'll edit in a link to the page for it later when I find one.

This looks like a good reference along with Double Dragon and Streets of Rage but what do you mean the multiple planes?

In the game Phantom Breaker you jump between 2 planes. It can be a bit annoying and made some things drag on in the game. It was similar to Guilty Gear Isuka or those Fatal Fury games with the back and foward planes to fight on.

Oh that no I wouldn't use that in game that does look annoying XD

I'd much prefer a beat 'em up to a fighter, especially considering it's spinning off a game that already is a fighter. I'm imagining something like Final Fight with Filia and Samson as the player character (if you wanted it to be really arcade-y you could have multiple playable characters and couch co-op, maybe Carol/Painwheel as the second character), and enemies would be street creeps like the creepy guy at the beginning of Filia's story, maybe Black Egrets eventually, bosses could be characters that didn't make the vote, like Hive or Brain Drain, and the final boss would be Parasoul or Vitale or something. 4 or 5 levels, no logical story, short, but challenging 45 min-1 hour playtime. If that were good, it could be really fun! It would have to look good and play better, though.

I'm thinking it'd be cool with a few secret characters to supplement it. And he's talked about some sort of MapleCrest "Arena" which I find an itrigueing idea.

Well the High school's arena actually I think the story will be centered around students needing to fight others in order to go to the next grade or something like that. And as for the bosses I think ill start off from one large high school student or teacher and gradually start fighting more familiar faces like Brain Drain, Valentine and maybe even the Skullgirl marie at some point. I also had an idea for an extra story if you beat marie without getting hit on Skullgirl mode (Basically hard) where you can play as Marie and Peacock before they transformed into who they are in game.

secret fight with D. Violet! Or she's the true final boss in teache mode XP

That's who's gonna be the teacher boss actually! I was trying to remember her name XD

XDD I don't remember her non heroinne name, sorry

That's fine I didn't know her real name either XD

Try playing the (legendary) game that inspired Phantom Breaker, Treasure's (Ikaruga, Gunstar Heroes) Guardian Heroes. It can be played on a saturn emulator or on the 360 port.

I saw the first post;

Please, go grab MUGEN and hack away, very quickly. Nothing better than a WIP Model. ( Yes it sucks, but its the thing that is meant for that ), Other projects exist too but that's prettymuch off the licks.

EDIT: What I mean to say is that a working prototype is miles better than words.

There needs to be alternate palettes. Maybe even an in-game palette editor?

Mrs. Victoria.
Yes. Great advice. We must decide on the inclusion of a palette editor now before the type of game is even confirmed.
By palette editor you mean we can create our own palettes? Awesome!
If not, please do explain.

Sarcasm exists.
Cellsai was taking a jab at the guy for suggesting a palette editor before the game is even confirmed to even get off the ground.

I'm thinking a more of a game that plays like dark souls but takes place in the world of skullgirls

Think we should focus on getting the game to exist first >_>
Now, are we doing 2p co-op or 4p co-op? Palettes would ONLY make sense in a 4p co-op situation, since players could all select Filia if they wanted, while in a 2p situation, it'd be easier to just have singular alts to both Painwheel and Filia, who would be the starting characters in that case.

Personally, I'm a bigger fan of beat em' ups like Scott Pilgrim vs the World and Phantom Breaker, which are up to 4 players and feature highly stylized and expressive sprites, which fits a bit more with SG art idea anyways. I think that'd be the best idea. Of course, It's not my idea, so take what you will and give no credit! XD

Which of course undoubtly all of those games were inspired by the simpsons arcade game which was a beat em up and 4 player co-op but anyways I do like the idea of 4 player co-op but two player I think would be more challenging and much easier to do but I will keep the 4 player co-op in mind if I ever decide to go with it lol

It's your game man, your game and my 2 cents is all it is :P

There were many, many, many incredibly influential beat em ups besides Simpsons. Many of which had 4 or even 8 players (X-Men). Phantom Breaker is specifically a homage to Guardian Heroes. I'm not sure how Scott Pilgrim works, but I could probably trace the influences if I knew more about it.

Beat em ups you should play if you want to make one (also make sure you look up move lists and whatnot, King of Dragon's and Knights of The Round are unplayable if you don't know how to parry):

King of Dragon's
Dungeons and Dragons Tower of Doom
Dungeons and Dragons Shadow over Mystara
Armoured Warriors
Golden Axe*
Streets of Rage (particularly 1 and 2)
Sengoku 3
Alien Vs Predator
Denjin Makai 2
Final Fight*
X-Men*
Battle Circuit
The Punisher
Cadillac and Dinosaurs
Dungeon Magic
Guardian Heroes
Knights of The Round

There are others too that are worth checking out (Sonic Blast Man 2 on Super Nes, Ninja Baseball Batman, etc.) but these are essential. Especially Alien Vs Predator and Armored Warriors, which are the pinnacle of the genre imo. You don't have to like them all, but if you don't understand why other people like them, than you don't have enough understanding of the genre to make one.

Also make sure you play them on one credit though. Arcade games aren't meant for multiple credits except as practice. The score counter represents your mastery/completion rate of the game, which is reset on game over. So you didn't really beat the game if you do it on more than one coin.

red denoted = god tier

* denoted = I personally feel these haven't aged well, but they're incredibly influential so they're worth checking out.

No TMNT? For Shame.

Scott Pilgrim was based on a number of things. I couldn't say as of right now, though what it is exactly
