Skullgirls Stage & Background Discussion

I always found that yellow hue hideous, A+ decision to change it.

It really make it looks like different it's more clear to look at(in a somber way) and really nail the otherwordly catacomb theme more closely!

It's really appreciated, but it's weird to see the old backround still being retouched after all this time!

I honestly prefer the old. that sickly light coming from below gave it an evil yet powerful feel. The new look is cool, but I prefer the larger palette it had going for it earlier with all the color. I understand and don't mind the change much, but I prefer the old one.

It's okay the yellow is there, haunting the current beta build.
(It's in the picture that appears during stage selection!)

Yeah, I'm in the "preferred the old one but it's not that big a deal so whatevs" camp.

Late to the topic but i'm glad to see i wasn't the only one who checked out who the girl in the background of the moving train stage was, i did try Filia vs Fukua to see if she was gonna change and she didn't, maybe it IS a third Filia.

Brain Drain does indeed need a hobby.

I really hate the new atrairium

Sooooo.... is there a good chance of a nighttime version of the train stage? Something that'll make me wanna listen to The Passenger while playing it.

I'm still for sunset! OR OR OR OR OR! OOOORRRRR!
Train Stage time transition? Maybe a variant that transitions from night to an amazing sunset to daytime? Or something...I want that sunset variation dammit...

Oh damn, a sunset sea view from it would be so beautiful and awesome, i could also dig a night-time view, but that would be so damn distracting too, i would probably have a hard time pulling my long combos while looking at the background.

(note that the background is already distracting at some points, but just like with Medici Tower, it's all about getting used to it)

I like the new Atrium, but that also means its going to need new art for the select screen and whenever it's shown during story mode dialogue, right?

Old Atrium can always continue to live on as a picture in the gallery.

Or maybe it will be removed there too, that'd be kind of hilarious.

I honestly love the new one, of course I'm probably being biased based on loving the color blue, but I feel it looks and functions way better then the old one....
However I'd be lying if I didn't admit to being in the grouping of players who will miss it. Heh maybe there could be two of this stage one for the new color and old colors...I mean logically that means one more new stage or maybe it could be the color on nightmare mode instead of the blue one?
Of course its probably not easy to do things like that so I'm not expecting that it's just an idea since almost all stages have 2 versions of themselves...kinda makes me think of accent core's stages were some were just a recolor. I think...well sorry for babbling on to long again love the new stage color, will miss the old if the old get's incorporated somehow this would be nice ^^

I still want to see all the banners never really saw them due to them being covered by something (I can't get skullgirls for PC so I can't get endless beta I play on ps3)

It have been already confirmed that it won't happens, mainly because the new version doesn't only change the color but also fix some framerate issue. Marie is already a different color in nightmare mode so you can say that your idea is implemented in some way!

Ah my bad I miss that confirmation....sorry DX, regardless I still like the new colors though ^^

I actually know the guy that painted the Final Atrium background, so while I was fairly attached to the original version, I do think the new version has some nice changes. In particular, I'm glad the fighting area was given a bit more substance, and I like how the color shifts allow the moon to stand out more as a light source.

Are there any images to compare how the dynamic lighting affects the other two stages? I think I can see the differences on the Empty Cathedral, but the Medici Tower changes don't pop out to me as much. I assumed the lower level of Medici Tower was going to feel darker, but do the changes have more to do with the lighting on the characters than with the BG?

I guess it's tough to notice improvements on things that already looked pretty good!

Medici Tower's main lighting change is on the top floor.

A bright spotlight from the top. Gives the characters a nice punch of contrast. Run to the sides to get back into the shadows. For instance, go left near the portrait of what looks like Filia's father:
Retail on the left, Beta on the right

You can see the new directional highlight coming from the top right, and both characters look a tiny bit brighter in value.

Sweet, that's definitely attention to details!

I can see the difference in the first comparation of images, i can notice the lightning change (which is lovely), but i have to agree with Witchfinder that there is from little to no difference in the comparation inside the spoilers, maybe i just need to look longer and further into it.

I noticed that the beta patch update from 3/15 said 'Removed NPCless variation of New Meridian from regular occurrence', but I have gone and played the sage like 20 times and haven't gotten an NPCless version at all yet. Am I just the unluckiest person alive or has it been removed altogether?

Also are any of you devs planning on rearraging the stage select order around at some point? There are far more important stuff to be worked on, but if that situation ever occurs is it possible to move the Little Innsmouth stage to be before Little Innsmouth (Night), like how the Empty variants of the Lab 8 and Grand Cathedral stages are directly after the original versions? My OCD can't handle the Dagonian town stage-block that is Streets of New Meridian!

Noticed you guys rearranged them in today's beta patch update, so thanks for that! I really like how a lot of the stages are grouped together by location now, with it going from Streets of New Meridian to River King Casino, Medici Tower ect.!

"Suburbs - Gehenna"

........so all those people living normal lives at Maplecrest and the ones constantly going to the Grand Cathedral are usually walking over a bloody, meaty, hellish zone that is just a few meters underground? (suggesting Gehenna is bigger than it seems, covering kilometers of underground landscape, mostly because it seems to be the ruins of an ancient civilization rather than just a hole)

*shivers*

I thought the church was located in the cemetery downtown. Also one thing I love about the church is the fact people ignore the fact that there's people fighting behind them.

Yep!
This is all pretty cool lore stuff. I can see that Downtown is a very wealthy urban district with entertainment centers and major businesses, South/Bayside is more poor and has small businesses and apartments, and the Suburbs is the upper-middle class residential area. This plus the Train Stage really helps to map out the city.

Its easy to make that mistake. A lot of times in story modes you go from a fight on the rooftops or the streets of New Meridian to the Cathedral. I can definately see ow that confusion could come about.

i also didn't know Glass Canopy was outside New Meridian, i tought it would be in Downtown.

Where in heavens is Class Notes? Does Mrs. Victoria teleport you into a higher plane of existence inside a notebook or something?

Also, the best part about Glass Canopy, for me at least, is Zone-tan in the background watching you get rekt.

Yep!

Oh that's neat. I also always thought the Cathedral was that church you see off to the left of Streets of New Meridian.

i also didn't know Glass Canopy was outside New Meridian, i tought it would be in Downtown.

Glass Canopy is in Canopolis - the capital city of the Canopy Kingdom.

oh so that's why you don't play in that stage in any of the story modes. because they all take place in New Meridian. neat.

Well Fukua fights Parasoul on Glass Canopy in her Story Mode if we wanna get technical, but everyone knows that doesn't count as canon anyway. It actually makes way more sense that Parasoul's stage (or at least a place where Black Egrets/Umbrella NPCs would be) would be in the capital of all places, seeing as she is a princess and all!
