I hate to say this but you failed to take in consideration of the weapon's vendor and Octogirl

But the whole Goggles/belt debate is really silly. So moving on we got somewhat new info on the tumblr on Captain Cuttlefish

Guys, guys, you can spray ink with the roller. Sure it's not far but this confirms that the roller is the only thing I'm using ever.

I bet it uses absurd amounts of ink though. Like the relative distance in pic 3 being about 100% of the ink tank.

I could see that being implemented for balancing. It's like a rocket launcher, which does a lot of damage, but is super slow to reload and only has a couple of shots. Or something.
 
I think a rocket launcher isn't the best way to describe it, seeing as a rocket launcher has a range far greater and causes an explosion. I think a more suitable analogy would be.... a paint roller.
 
it would consider it more to be the "Heavy" of the game, so to speak

Sorta reminds me of the Pyro's utility in TF2. Close range combat that can be especially useful as an ambush but not much else (Though in this game at least you get the utility of painting the ground).
 
Well each piece of equipment has perks, and more you use the item more perks unlock. The only equipment stat that is confirmed right now, that I'm aware of, is ink saver, so there's that.
 
The Roller IS a melee-oriented weapon that speads ink. I believe it may not constantly use ink, or use it at a reduced rate, due to you needing to move with it. Of course, you can stop spreading when necessary. Perhaps it uses less ink over time than other weapons when spreading, but uses a ton for simple attacks?
 
Considering how exactly reloading works in the game I don't think having the weapon use up a lot of ink would weaken it too much.
Since it's clearly something designed more for spreading ink than actually fighting, unless you charged headlong into enemy territory by yourself with no ink whatsoever you've always got constant access to more ink.

I guess the point is, my money's saying that the paint roller uses a lot of ink to use.
 
you know it actually really says something about how unique Splatoon is with how difficult it is to particularly classify the roller as anything but

I'm also assuming it will be more a utility weapon. You're the guy who stays behind or gets around the enemy lines an spreads ink to finish covering YOUR area or sneakily cover your OPPONENT'S area while they're busy fighting. And even though what you're doing may be immediately apparent, the enemy trying to go back to get you would involve letting your opponent gain ground and have advantage. It's a pretty sneaky tool :D
 
Like I said, think the Pyro from TF2. You can run around holding M1 all day but that'll get you killed a lot of the time by the ranged weapons. The best way to use him is to ambush people around corners and stuff, then make your move once they're killed. I imagine the roller will have a similar utility.
 
But given tat the winner is decided via area covered, I can see many a sneaky player use this tool for more than just ambushing. Especially if you have a well coordinated team, you could set up some pretty impressive sneaks with the thing, or just out right plow thru people with the shield. Again, sneaking behind enemies and covering their area while they fight is also a possibility.

I'm the kind of player that is absolute trash in actual combat but excels in sneaking around stealing kills from behind. This kind of tool is definitely a huge game changer in these kinds of situations.

In this game, I'd also be the player who shoots the corners and cracks where very few people tread to get as much territory as possible :P

GameXplain was talking about that mode on their video today.

Apparently Splat Zones is going to be a locked mode that you can only get after achieving level 10? I mean, I guess I can kinda see why, I'd rather have skilled players on my team in a mode like that than have to carry them all like I would have to in most other shooters, but it's still a weird decision.
 
Looks like the Roller needs a bit of a nerfing to be honest. Covers waaaay too much surface area without needing to recharge ink.
