So, at this moment in time. I've never had the chance to play a Tabletop RPG, or board game in a long ass time
And due to Wil Wheaton's fantastic series where he plays Tabletop Games, I thought I might as well make a thread for those that do play Tabletop games, be it Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, or Betrayal At House on the Hill, talk about it here

Though, I also thought I'd mention a very awesome website.
It's called Roll20, you can basically play any tabletop RPG online through this website, all of the ones listed above here work and you can take care of it easily!
Who knows, maybe we could even schedule some Skullheart RPG nights!

Either way, talk about the ancient art of Tabletop RPGs, Games, and what have you here!
Tales, what ones you like best, stuff like that.

I'd consider it if I could find the time. I have zero RPG experience though.

    My vote is for Shadowrun.

Shadowrun? I wouldn't be against that.
Could be fun, I'm just hoping that some people here actually have the books.
darndest thing about Roll20 is you still need the books (Or PDFs, thank god!) to get the setting and how things work

What edition, though? That's the big thing.

On a slightly related note, I was in a Roll20 Shadowrun campaign, though it kinda imploded since we couldn't synchronize our schedules.

To be honest, though, I'd suggest newbies to Roll20 and p&p gaming alike to mess with something more rules-light, like Most Excellent Adventure or Drunken Bear Fighter, mostly to get used to the system. Or maybe even Betty and Veronica Meet the Punisher.

That's another thing that's kinda tough about Tabletop games, finding the time to do everything.
Plus for newcomers there's all those rules and dice. That's one partial reason why I never got to trying the games.

Though starting with something simple sounds smart, most likely.
Especially since I'm used to Roleplaying online with no dice.

    The miniature one right?

Check out Hell Dorado. I'm loving it. Concept: The 30 year war was so horrific that a gate to hell opened up. The european powers descend to hell to claim it as their own. Factions: Demons, Europeans, Saracens, Chinese (I think). And the miniatures are fucking gorgeous.

Also I'm a huge fan of Warmachine.

I had a very close and long time internet friend who used to be big into this. Unfortunately, I haven't seen him in nearly a year so I can only assume that he was sucked into a dimensional portal and is currently wandering through an alien world hoping the next leap will be the leap home.

His exploits include winning the hardest possible dice roll to vomit on a car through sheer will power (for no other reason than the sake of it), defeating another player in PVP by ramming his opponents fist with his face, and "electing" to run in a circle on the floor while shouting WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP upon seeing a monster in Call of Cthulhu.

I really wanna play Call of Cthulhu, if only for the fact Combat is discouraged and you usually get all sorts of fucked up by the campaign's end.
You never win, and even if you do, it's pyyrhic in the end.
    Plus, it's horror.
I really wanna play Horror Tabletop Games for some reason.
Mostly CoC stuff, but other stuff is fine too.

And hah, those sound like fun exploits.
Sorry you haven't seen him in a while

    Besides him.
You usually never win and even then it tends to not stick.

Still though, Call of Cthulhu and basically any other Horror Tabletop Game sounds like great fun.
I don't think you can play the board games online though, sadly

Shadowrun and CoC are both great tabletops, but can be a little harsh on newcomers due to the high character mortality rate. Three of my friends and I run a SR session every Sunday, and I'm currently taking part in a Pathfinder Pirates campaign on Roll20. The site is really good in my opinion, and anyone who is interested should check it out if they haven't already. Every session I seem to find a fun new feature to mess around with.

Good luck in your gaming ventures XP

I knew it was common iwth CoC, but you tend to die a lot in Shadowrun too? Huh, I didn't know that.
I can see why that'd be harsh to newcomers though, but to me I think a game where you die a lot would at least mean you can make mistakes so you can last longer in future games. But yeah, Roll20 is probably the way to handle this if we ever decide to follow through with this.

    And good luck on yours

If you've ever wanted something better than roll20...
    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/274930865/tabletop-simulator
At the moment it's physics-enabled chess (among other public domain board games), but one of the stretch goals is an RPG kit.
If they make it there, it will be the only online tabletop rpg that even comes close to the experience of playing a real game of D&D or the like. I'm not joking at all. Roll20 is technically impressive but it doesn't give you any tools with which to fuck around- which is what at least half of what playing real D&D is.

    That....that is impressive.
I hope it reaches it's goals, because that'd be extremely useful.

Also, while I'm on topic about Call of Cthulhu.
Somehow I missed the memo that last year there was a Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition Kickstarter.
One that was beyond successful (reaching 1000% of it's goal)
So this year there'll be a 7th Edition for CoC.
I picked a good time to look into this shit.

Personally I'd prefer Arkham Horror over COC because you can actually fucking kill Cthulhu and that's awesome.

Too bad you can't kill Azathoth though. That would be the best thing ever.

Did you hear there's spin-offs of Arkham Horror now too?
There's Elder Signs, which is a card game and a scaled back version of it.
Mansions of Madness, which is more mystery based and also has a bunch of scenarios/stories for it (It's kinda like Betrayal at House on the Hill, but the scenario is predetermined, as well as the house layout)
And Eldritch Horror, which is streamlined Arkham Horror and around the world.

Needless to say, I fucking wanna play them all.

So, I'm taking the intiative and probably gonna get into Call of Cthulhu deep soon.
My sister has a bunch of bros (and my real brother) living at a house not too far from me, and they said they'd play Call of Cthulhu if I got it.
This is pretty good since 7th Edition comes out this year.

Though chances are I'd probably have to DM the first few games.
Any tips from past game masters?
Doesn't even need to be Call of Cthulhu

I'll keep that in mind for non-Call of Cthulhu things.

    But that aside, yeah.
I've been told it's fine to be a killer DM (And it's encouraged) in CoC, but I'll probably be mild. Especially if I somehow coax my cousins into playing, lol.

I heard you also need some photocopied sheets as well?

    Also, guys.
I'm probably gonna be getting into this CoC thing stuff for real, so like.
Would any of you be interested in running some games on here or in Skype or something?
If Penny Arcade can run a CoC Campaign in a thread, I think I can do the same on here or in Skype.
    Doesn't seem too hard.

I would definitely play on this thread. I might play on roll20 but ehhhh. I don't have a webcam so skype is out for me.
I would play on tabletop simulator all day every day (19 days left and already at 6.3k, the tabletop kit is a done deal at this point.)

We don't have an RP Subforum, but that's probably a good idea if we make this a reality.

So two weeks later I got the Call of Cthulhu Monster Book.
When people said this game is cruel I thought they were joking.
There's like 5 instant kills, as well as spiders that melt peoples faces and proceed to eat their brain while they're still alive.
This is one hardcore as shit game.

When I came to my uni this year I also joined a tabletop games group. It's been really good so far as surprisingly it's been one of the most social activities I have done. The game I have played in were dungeons and dragons 3.5 edition, A star wars game, A dresden files game and Warhammer 40k - Only war. Only war has been the best so far due to all the sillyness that ha happened through the campaign.

Man, that's a lovely assortment of things. All those sound great.

I mean, I'm not AS interested in D&D and Pathfinder as say, Cthulhu (which is pretty much the only thing I'm willing to sink money into), but man, that sounds great.

Any examples of what happened during then?

    Hah.
Well, gotta remember. Most CoC games you CAN win the scenario, or story, but in the end another cult will rise, or the elder god/nasty suffers a setback, at worse. They'll always come back and threaten the world again. And even if you win, it's not without great sacrifice, to your sanity, your friends, or your body. And if you lose, oh well, the world ends earlier than prophesied, not that it matters in the grand scheme of the cosmos.

But, as we've learned from Dwarf Fortress, losing can be quite fun!

I'm going to list some of the shenanigans from only war. Keep in mind this was just from one player.
During a mission to rescue to secure our fort after it had been attacked, one of our players went off to go find some wine.

After sparring with the Commissar of the base, the same player decided to flag him, if he was seen this would have been punishable by death.

During the battle in the fort, me being the medic, I went around trying to help people. The same player saw the injured people and made the suggestion to get rid of the other injured people so that we didn't have to help them, he was then punched in the face by the surgeon near by.

Surprisingly it has been quite funny probably due to the fact that we know it's going to be grimdark so silly moments happen to lighten the mood. Also we are successful group due to having only one member of group dying, that was the player who I mentioned previously and now he has a new character who is equally just as silly.

Hah, well it's good to know you're having fun with it at least.
You usually need at least some humor to throw things off.

I think some of the fun of TTRPGs is not knowing what kind of insane shit your players will and roll with it.
Even in Call of Cthulhu that can happen.
I was reading a story the other day about how they were in the Dreamlands and were attacked by a Lich, thne... "I attempt to seduce the Lich! I want to hang out with it and have it tell me where the artifact is!"
"Success! But the lich wants to go on a date with you now"
    Stuff like that.

The best achievement during only war was also slightly funny was when during a mock battle were are getting shot by the opponent who have decided to use real weapons. The ogryn is shot first but attempts a dodge. The dodge would based of his agility which is 22 and since he doesn't have dodge trained he has to roll a two or one to succeed. And then he succeeds, with how it was described since how certain stuff would be explained our ogryn did a matrix style over the shot.

Describing what happens on a critical failure or critical hit also sounds like it's fun too.
Like what you just related to. Hah.

I think one of the features in the Dragon Age RPG was that if you got a special roll, you got a "Stunt" point which basically allowed you to do something awesome

    So, Double Posting.
    But hey, Pulp Cthulhu
That looks like a fun rulebook for time to time, basically it's a very action-y/less bleak version of the Cthulhu ruleset.
It looks dumb, but fun. Might have to run a few Skullheart adventures with that.

Also CoC 7E still isn't due out until Late May-July.

In my tabletop games club I had the final sessions for each of of the games I played which were Only war and the Dresden files game, here were some of the highlights.
Only war : The priest used his double jointedness to escape from an enemy that was holding them hostage and caught his hand on their grenades and blew him up. We also sorta won the final battle as the orc army weapons blew up and there were no orcs left.

Dresden files : We fought of a werewolf who who was the the most endurable enemy in the game so far as he fought without either of his arms and almost bisected himself to attack one of the party members and succeeded in the attack. We defeated the vampire butler that had the bane of our existence for a while, in how it was done, the vampire in our group pulled out a grenade launcher and after saying the quote from scarface blew up the vampire butler.

God damn, that sounds fucking nuts.
It's usually the climaxes of things where stuff gets absolutely bananas.
Least you won, apparently that's usually when your characters die too.

Sounds like no small amount of fun, just keeps getting me hyped for future Skullheart sessions

And I said it before, but holy fuck. LOTS of cool CoC related stuff Coming up

My table top group have started a new session, which more games and more sillyness or awesomeness or both

In the first game which is a customised game based off Psycho pass, I ended up inadvertanely creating batman as my character. Not much of major ridiculousness happened due to being the beginning session.

There is also the lord of the rings where our group plays a new fellowship trying to complete what was the original heroes had accomplished again with the team comporised of an orc, three elfs a dark wizard and me the shepherd nomad. The first session was essentially combat the session. Some highlights, One of the elfs firing arrowing the back of a sleeping goblin which caused over ten goblin to appear out of nowwhere with more incoming and lots of defeating goblins comprised the entirety of the session. Another highlight was that our dark wizard used so much shadow magic that the bridge the fight too place on was covered in it for a couple of days.

I am very excited to be involved as the Composer and Sound Designer in the newest Darkraven Games Kickstarter, bit.ly/DarkravenREDUX live until Tuesday, Feb 10, 2015.

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/618425218/darkraven-premium-gaming-soundscapes-redux

We provide soundscapes for Board Games, RPGs, LARPs, Video Games, and more.

Gaming soundscapes will never be the same after this project.
It's not just amazing backgrounds for your games but it's fantastic original music fused together.
You won't watch TV or a movie with the sound muted so why play your games that way!

Make your games come alive with our premium immersive soundscapes. Create scenes that you and your friends will remember and be talking about for years to come. The ambient backgrounds and music in these 10 minute audio loops will add a new dimension to every moment in your game. Our tracks combine high quality professionally engineered ambient environments with originally composed music. Just like in musical theatre, radio programs of old, TV shows, video games and movies this intersection of sound and emotion will transport your gaming experience to the next level.

This project now contains four musically enhanced soundscape packs:
The Core Set ~ Battle Pack, Suspense & Horror Pack, and Kingdom of the Elves Pack,
as well as the newly added Cthulhu 2 Soundsuite: Return of the Old Ones Add-On Pack.
In addition, we are offering some of our past products: the Cthulhu 1 Pack, Science Fiction Pack, and Fantasy Pack at a special discounted Kickstarter rate.
There are also free bonus soundscapes for Gold Level backers.

We would greatly appreciate your support, and would hope to enhance your gaming experiences.

    Thanks so much!

So, turns out I have a lot of News this time.
Beast: The Primordial's Kickstarter opened, it's another Race/Monster you can play as in World of Darkness, which I mentioned in the last post, it's already funded, but it's super cool.

And like I said in the Call of Cthulhu thread, Chaosium's Under New (old?) Management. hopefully we'll get 7th Edition soon.

I'm hopefully gonna be able to play both Call of Cthulhu (as a DM), and World of Darkness (As a player) with three different groups of people, kinda nervous, yet kinda excited.

Any DM or Player stories any of you guys wanna share? I'm sure you've got some great ones!
