I didn't bother to come up with a clever title, so this is just THE DESTINY THREAD.

I played the Alpha, and it got me more excited for the game than I previously had been. People have been saying, "it's Halo meets Borderlands," but that doesn't really do it justice. I encourage anyone on the fence to preodrer for their Beta codes, and if you don't like how it plays in the beta, you can always cancel your preorder. It played extremely well, and I think it'll have long legs for future playability.

As someone who hasn't been keeping up with recent game announcements, what is this?

EDIT: Ninjad by an explanation

An FPS that plays a lot like Halo did when Bungie developed it. The main hook for this particular game is that character builds and team-based PvE are a large part of the game, meaning there's more for you to do than just deathmatch it up all day and night. From what I can tell, they've put a lot into the world-building, so it should actually be story you can care about.

Going to be getting it for PS4...in like a year.
That PS4 Bundle is mighty tempting but I need more than this to keep me coming back to a $450 piece of hardware.

Can't wait to play the beta to this game because I saw the game on some streams and it looks like something I would probably play for years(like I did with Halo). I've been keeping up with this game since it was announced and I can't wait to actually play it.

I think there's plenty to justify having a PS4, but... I guess your logic is sound, if it is the only game you want.

There's plenty more, but let's be real, right now, only two games for PS4 I want coming out THIS year that would be preferable (Or exclusive to PS4) are Infamous Second Son, and Destiny.
My philsophy is once a console has four games on it that I want or are coming out in a small time period or already, it's worth purchasing.
PS4 will probably get that in Early 2015 when Mortal Kombat X and some of their other heavy hitters come out.

I've liked Bungie for years, now, but I'd been kind of getting down on the general art style of Destiny... it just seemed boring, or something.

Thing is, after playing the alpha, I can say two things:
  1. The gameplay is top-notch, like... seriously the best FPS gameplay I've played recently.
  2. The art style suits movement much better than screenshots, and I no longer feel like it's boring after seeing it in motion
I went from, "eh, it's Bungie, it'll probably be good," to, "I can't wait to play this game some more."

I play games with my kids, so I've been getting a lot of mileage out of numerous indie games. Resogun, Towerfall, Trine 2, and Cell Damage are recent big hits in our house, though they were both fairly enthralled by Destiny for the time they got to play it.

We're getting a wee bit off track, but yeah.
It's good to know Destiny is at least living up to some of the hype.
One of the things I liked about the Alpha (and I hope remains for the beta and main game) is the frequency of loot drops. They're not that common, even for common weapons/armor. You might get 3 drops on a 20 minute mission, and I like that. The worst part about Borderlands (and most other loot-based games) is the constant menu surfing. Every time a fight is over, you picked up 10 new guns, so now it's time to make sure you're using the best one, so let's go into the menu AGAIN.

Not in Destiny. Only a few drops per mission, so there's less time checking numbers and more time shooting bad guys.

I agree that the art style isn't all that appealing at first glance, but it's good to know when the game is in front of you being played it looks good.

PS4 and XBO.

Beta and Full games.

Yes. Both.

Alpha made me happy.

Details about collector's edition stuff was also released today.

The Ghost Edition will cost $149.99 and comes with:
  • A steelbook disc case and disc copy of the game
  • A field manual with "handwritten" notes
  • An "antique" star chart
  • A Guardian folio
  • 4 postcards from the Golden Age (i.e. Earth before the Darkness decimated it)
  • The Destiny Expansion Pass ($34.99 value; good for Expansion I and Expansion II)
  • Collector's Edition Digital Content (an in-game Ghost skin, player emblem, and ship skin)
  • And the centerpiece: a life-size replica of the Ghost robot, complete with lights and Peter Dinklage dialogue samples.

The $99.99 Limited Edition includes everything in the CE except the illuminated, talking Ghost replica.

Finally, there's also an $89.99 Digital Guardian Edition for those looking to skip the disc version of the game. It includes:
  • a digital download of the game
  • early access to Vanguard armory and player emblem pre-order bonuses
  • A reservation for upcoming Destiny expansions "The Dark Below" and "House of Wolves" (each of which includes new Story missions, cooperative and competitive multiplayer arenas, and a "wealth" of new weapons, armor, and gear)
  • And the aforementioned Collector's Edition Digital Content.
There's details on Bungie's site too

Will probably scoop a PS4 Ghost edition and the Digital Guardian Edition on XBO. As I have been waiting for this game for quite a while. So I'm totally dropping some dollar to reflect that. Who here is ready to Beta? and what systems?

I'll be doing the PS4 beta (longer time frame ftw).

I hear that!
I'll have access to 3 Platforms. PS4, PS3, and XBO. I'll probably bounce primarily between PS4 and XBO.

I'm looking to Live Stream the Beta(I didn't live stream the Alpha cause I wanted to personally take it all in)

Guess I better get that Share button Ready(I refuse the re-connect the Kinect tho)

I'm getting the PS4 bundle for this. Probably going to do the PS3 beta. Thought about picking up a used PS4 for a week from GameStop for it then returning it but kinda too much of a hassle.

I was wondering if any of the CEs were worth looking into but the only thing I'd really need from them is the Expansion Pass, which I guess is just a Season Pass. So I imagine I'm fine just getting my bundle and then getting the pass when it comes out.

Gamestop here sold out of ghost editions :(

Gonna be playing the PS3 beta, but buy Destiny's Ghost Edition on the PS4 because by that time I'll have a PS4.

You can go select your platform now on Bungie.net. Go to Profile and Redeemed Codes.

Each code is worth THREE for the Platform you select!

Hopping into say "fuck you, consoles".

I'll see myself out.

Obviously I'm half joking/half jealous. It does look good as hell.

That said, games which exclude a sizeable portion of players is bad for the community. And sadly x-platform is likely pretty far off since controllers can't compete with keyboard+mouse.

None of these issues have ever affected a Bungie game. Halo did just fine without kbm or PC versions, and so will Destiny.

Hhhmmm dont count a pc version out. I know they dodge the question a lot. But Activision is part of this venture. And they love money. There is also demand for it. So, I could see it.

I don't think there's not gonna be a pc version, but I do think it's never going to be a focus. If you release a game on PC, it's going to be pirated far more than actually sold, that's just the reality of the situation. "Player," demand on PC doesn't actually correlate to, "Paying customer," demand, so they really don't have much reason to have a sense of urgency on the PC version. Once all of their paying supporters have gotten the game, they'll release on PC the the industry standard 95% piracy rate.

I think it's a, "get what you pay for," kind of situation, and in this case, most PC gamers aren't paying anything. People always complain about PC versions of AAA games being janky and unpolished (or late, or not happening at all), but what motivation does a studio have to work hard on it when the sales numbers always look like shit?

Let's be careful not get into a PC vs CONSOLE debate, regardless. I was mainly voicing my opinion on why Destiny in particular won't be rushing to a PC near you anytime soon.

No, I don't mean it will affect Bungie. By the community, I mean we the gamer. It is bad for us, not Bungie (or whatever).

Accounting for all console exclusives, we would have to pay well over a grand just to play the games we want.

Hell, just looking at the FG community, god forbid you want to play both GG and KI. That's about 700 bucks worth of console for two games.

And as for piracy, it is a problem for sure on PC... but as console exclusives get more popular and consoles become more PC-like, piracy is just going to shift. As I'm sure you know, it is fully possible to pirate games on the xbox and playstation and it is likely to get easier and more popular.

I do agree with you though, Destiny coming to PC is far from a "sure thing". Hell, we didn't get some of the Halos for years after its initial launch.

Anyway, I'll bow out and let this stand as a Destiny thread instead of a pro-xplatform or anti-console exclusive thread.

Edited to add this article which suggests that the piracy issue is overstated for PCs and that financially, games on PCs compete alongside of consoles.

Partially because they would have to retract all those comments where they were dicks to the pc gamer community, admittedly. This project has made me really dislike bungie.

This has always been a pretty silly argument. The incredibly obvious solution is right in front of us, after all: support usb kb+m on the console versions. Most people already have them lying around and the people that don't can get one for less than a regular xbox controller if they aren't dead set on getting a razer or something. The situation, as it is right now, is like if people banned arcade sticks from a bunch of fighting game tournaments because they're so much better than controllers.

Double posting because I didn't see this particular post earlier.
Agreeing with you, of course, that
If you were to look at actual sales figures then you would know this is complete bullshit. But honestly, I don't blame you for believing it. Because normally when you hear about this stuff you're reading this kind of article. But wait a second, did you notice something silly there? The battle for pc is always given to you as pc vs consoles. This is a terrible way of phrasing it- is the Xbox a failure because it sold half as many call of duty copies as all other platforms combined? No, that's ridiculous. If we're talking about whether or not it's worth a developer's time to make a pc port, you don't ask whether or not you can make as much money as xbox AND playstation on this one platform, you ask if you can get as much as just one of them. And, would you look at that, pc is managing about half of the combined console sales they keep comparing them to. Combine that with the well-documented fact that pc gaming is growing much faster than console gaming is, and... yeah, sales figures just aren't a very good excuse anymore.
The real reason? It's probably because they're used to making console games. They don't want to try something new until they know for sure destiny is a big hit, and even then it's more of a "maybe if we feel like it" sort of thing.
Also, good things to remember when talking about piracy:
It's logically impossible, at its core, to translate ANY data on piracy to lost sales figures, or percentage of paying pc gamers. You don't even know how many people pirated your game, let alone how many of those people bought your game afterwards or would never have bought your game even with piracy.
Piracy is the biggest scapegoat in entertainment history. Low sales? The pirates did it! I would love if some of these stats were true, though, like the always hilarious "95% piracy rate" the ubisoft ceo mentioned. After all, that means there are a full 20 times as many pc gamers as there are console gamers, you just don't see a vast majority of them because they're hiding in secret pirate lairs.

snip
I'm not sure if you're trolling or being serious, because you just went through almost every software pirating talking point. Regardless of whether you're serious or just taking the piss, this isn't a conversation for this thread. I'm going to leave your post because it's my fault for even opening the door for the PC master race hive mind. I'm closing that door right now.

TAKE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT PIRACY, PC VERSIONS, AND PC vs CONSOLE ELSEWHERE.

I've never had cause to use the mod tools, and I want to keep it that way, so for God's sake, don't make me do it now.

For anyone else playing the beta on PS4, Friday the 18th is my Destinypalooza day. I'll be on sporadically at other times, usually late at night, but if you want to TAKE IT TO THE FUCKING LIMIT, then catch me almost all day on Friday.

Hey guys,
So Bungie website updated and Companion App out.(iPhone and Android only)

http://www.bungie.net/
Sign in to your profile and you'll have a nice wealth of things to play with. One interesting one. Groups, Clans, and Alliances.

You can join any open group or clan or make your own. Clans have the added benefits once you have 4 members in it, the ability to have a Clan Tag(which you can make PSN, Xbox, or even both platforms!) with their name in-game and become eligible for Rewards. Then we have Alliances. Where you can set up a Network of Clans and unify together.

I'd start a Skullheart clan, but I did so in GTA5, and it taught me that there simply aren't enough players here to make up an effective clan in a different game.

EDIT: actually I will make a Skullheart clan, just to see some of the clan features during the beta. Maybe we'll even get enough people by the time the game comes out.
