The Game Awards (2014)

At least we're getting some gifs outta this

It's like a never ending circle of trainwrecks.
>The VGA's suck.
>One of the main reason they suck is because of the Commercialism. (Also because of the shitty dudebro culture they cater to but they're at least trying to combat that.)
>People only watch them for the reveal trailers.
>Commercialism is renewed another year because they don't have the reputation to make the VGA's anything different than a glorified 3 hour E3.
I really want an actual not shit awards show for gaming, but if this keeps happening it will never happen. The trailers are like this massive crutch that the VGA's keep leaning on more and more.

Truth be told I wasn't expecting much out of this thing, but after watching the first hour of it I was still very disappointed. Only news I would have really been interested in was Zelda for the Wii U or even something slightly smash related. If I am to be blunt, I personally don't care at all about DKC:TF so that segment didn't appeal at all, oh well what can you do.

Only things that were not painful to watch were Telltale Borderlands and No Man's Sky.

There are like 2 threads on gaf about how Joel was the worst choice and that Geoff just couldn't put up with it.

Personally though, I liked that Joel was just taking the piss out of something that really deserves to have the piss taken out of it, since the games weren't exactly appealing and obviously the whole thing is just advertisement for games that already have tons of advertisement. Broken Age and No Man's Sky are the only things that really stood out to me, having a backdrop of elephant excrement probably helped them a bit, but I'll definitely look into them in the future.

If that's true, the dewrito pope is caring about this bullshit way way way way way too late.
This is the guy who has perpetuated corrupt gaming journalism for years, possibly more than anyone else. He's the guy from the infamous dewrito gate, after all.

Whelp, shit

I just read through that and it's bloody disgusting. I thought the shit Gamespot pulled in their attempts to get page-views was bad, but this is physically sickening.

The biggest problem now is that not only has the casual market (I'll use that term sparingly since it's a bit iffy, but you know what I mean) been introduced to these kinds of events through things like Xbox 360's advertised stream feature on the dashboard, but that the only entrypoint they know is through these big companies who can limit what the audience gets to see so, unlike with the disgusting events from 2012, the voices of the people (who are all gamers) that will turn over the stones are just gonna be drowned out by the people who have been groomed to see only what the big buck companies want them to see if something like this ever happens again.

Jesus Christ, the games industry just gets shittier every year, I'd say it's been worse than the movie industry since 2007 and is coming close to beating the music industry in the contest of scumbaggery. BRB burning all my games

One of my favorite things was Joel's pose after the GTA5 performance.

Cranky replacing Zelda in Smash confirmed?

Nothin' wrong there. Kick Zelda, add Cranky, keep Sheik.

the only problem with this video is that it lack's DK's heavenly singing voice.

I will now remedy this.

you go, you giant ape bastard with the voice of an angel.

I'm so confused.

So it's next year, and that means more Video Game Awards bullshit.
Hopefully it will be better than last year.
By all rights, it probably will
Spike has straight dropped the game awards, and now it's all Geoff Keighly.
It will be shown on here
But we all know why we're gonna watch this, right?
OH yeah, the trailers
And it's already confirmed we'll at least get a new Metal Gear Online trailer there.
Not only that, there's allegedly a rumor that there will be Zelda U information there
Oh well, no matter what happens I'm willing to sit through bullshit for good trailers again this year.

Does that answer your question?

Well still, I meant more in general.
I mean the walking through the shit for the trailers last year was almost unbearable

I'm willing to trudge through the crap again if it has GOOD trailers.

How could it POSSIBLY be worse than last year?

My point is that the trailers are the ultimate representation of why this awards show is horrifyingly shitty. It's pretty damn upsetting that the main attraction in an awards ceremony are massively hyped ads that the corporations that make the games they're supposed to be judging pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to throw in. They'll never move forward as long as they only get views from people who want a sneak peak of metal gear solid 52 and a half: the liquid phantom gear snake.
You'd be a lot saner by the end if you just watch the trailers on youtube after the show is over. And for a bonus prize you can walk away feeling ever so slightly better for not contributing to the corruption of games journalism. Maybe.

I dont think it's that serious. There are so many other awards that games get throughout the year, so I can't really say "this one how we all watch for trailers, but happens to also give out awards is the reasoon gaming journalism sucks". I'll just multitask if things get too bad.

That's my plan too, pretty much.
I mean if they have animated stuff from the companies like they did the previous years there's another reason to watch.

They're live on Twitch right now /thegameawards

It's also on Youtube
Considerably better than last year already.

Anything is better than last year.

And most of this stuff is horribly underwhelming IMO. It just feels too bought-out. Too many teasers, and seriously, categories like "best gaming personality" or whatever and "best mobile game" just seem like pandering.

Well,
that wasn't bad.
Zelda U's looking pretty cool, though I hope it doesn't have too much trouble escaping the shadow of a certain colossus.
The Sierra tribute was great, I may or may not have teared up the tiniest bit during that.
If they announce a playable Raiden for Metal Gear Online I'll get excited for that.

Um, yeah, I guess those were the most standout things for me, aside from the fact that Mario Kart won best racing game over all these super realistic sports car games and Trials Fusion.

Stomps on any previous video game award shows that have happened previously, though that isn't exactly a high bar. Still needs work for next year though; could preferably go without so many ads. It's not Dew and Doritos levels of stupidity, but it's still...eh.

You motherfuck, I actually want PS All-Stars 2. ;_;

sorry if that sounded too mean

I would sacrifice DDB to Great Old One Cthulhu for PSASBR 2
Even if it was on PS4
And wasn't very Smash-ish.

I'd sacrifice DDB for pretty much anything.
In fact I'd probably just murder him.

What were talking about again, right PSASBR2,
no that would be super hype. Get some more/better characters, some Sony mascots, some recent Playstation exclusives.
Less guest characters.
Less overall blatant advertisement.
It'd be hype, but it'd never happen, especially not this close to Smash's release.

I stopped watching an hour in, missed the Zelda gameplay reveal.

Also this

does sony even have mascots at this point
i feel like japan only has Toro and Kuro but the west hates them

Kratos and Sackboy?
I mean, they're not specifically Sony, but they're definitely Playstation mascots.
