The Palettes of Skullgirls

Skullgirls Beta Patch Notes - 8/3
New palette! I would be even more beautiful if I rouged my face with your blood.

This one is based on Queen Odette from the PS2 classic, Odin Sphere. (go play it if you haven't already)

#16 looks fabulous! They nailed the likeness and the phthalo blue blood has a nice chilling contrast to the others' reds.

If only #13 was as easy! #13 is still a mystery. If you can guess correctly with a convincing argument, you'll win... uh, a free Skull Heart. Make a wish!

So the new palettes are I-no and Velvet from Odin Sphere?

Can anyone upload the two new palettes? I don't have Steam setup on this computer yet so I can't go see them.

It is definitely Ragyo Kiryuin. Eliza doesn't have Ragyo's big haircut so the headdress is picking up the slack for the rainbow. They even have the support characters to match the Kill la Kill theme. Albus is colored like Ragyo's secretary, Rei Hōōmaru. Horace is colored like a COVERS sentinel. And Sekhmet is colored as the original Life Fibers.

Here's the current list:
  1. Default colors
  2. Cleopatra (1963 film "Cleopatra")
  3. Kikuri-Hime (Shin Megami Tensei)
  4. Original colors
  5. Original colors
  6. Original colors
  7. Blood!
  8. Princess Iset (Vindictus)
  9. Midnight Bliss Jedah Dohma (Darkstalkers 3)
  10. Crimson Viper (Street Fighter series)
  11. Tharja (Fire Emblem: Awakening)
  12. Eliza (Tekken Revolution)
  13. I-No (Guilty Gear series)
  14. Odette (Odin Sphere)
  15. Dio Brando (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series)
  16. Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop)
  17. Velvet (Odin Sphere)
  18. Ragyō Kiryūin (Kill la Kill)
  19. Red (Transistor)
  20. Original colors
  21. Porrim Maryam (Homestuck)
  22. Original colors
I'm confident 4,5,6,20, and 22 are original colors. If anyone thinks otherwise, speak up!

Here's all the palettes with their references (blank = original). Special thanks to the Skullgirls wiki for capturing all the Eliza taunting pics (one can see Eliza and Sekhmet together) and knowing what #21 was.

4 is exactly the same as 1. Only it's red.

Now that I think about it, didn't Michelle Ruff voice Noire, future daughter of Tharja?

It uses a different color of gold, different hair color, and slightly different skin tone.
Not that anyone would notice.

To clarify: The "Ragyo" palette does not have a rainbow effect because it requires writing character-specific code for a very tiny portion of the character, meaning it wasn't worth the effort.

I noticed everything but the skin tone. That's a super slight diffeence. Sekhmet's also a different color though, isn't she?

Wow, did you see the blood moves from the Ragyo palette? I really love that shade in the red.

Is that Ragyo....? I mean, there's no rainbow affect of any kind... So I doubt it...
So you think that they're gonna make one tiny part of one palette rainbow so it look exactly the same as the reference.

#22 is miiiine

Close enough to Yoshikage Kira that I'll use it.
Thanks for the help sorting out palettes.

I feel like I'm gonna come across as an idiot, but I just got into SG a few months back and still don't know how to get skins like Eliza's DIO skin. How does one unlock those?

I believe a good number of palettes need to be bought. They are all in one pack, for $4 I believe. Some other palettes have to be unlocked via a code, but I think those ones are unlocked if you buy the palette bundle?

Also, anyone willing to take screenshots of each of Eliza's winposes in each of her different colors? 8 outfits for 22 colors is a lot, though.

I know about the code deal for each platform, that one was easy enough but it only unlocks palette 10 I think. I'm playing on PSN (cause why not, right?) so I'm wondering if buying the previous palette pack would unlock skins for future characters as well like Eliza (and maybe Beowulf?) or is there probably going to be another pack of skins that we have to wait for?

Yes I know. But just ask them then. I'd ask the red cross people. But if they change the crosses on Palette 12... I'd be very sad
That's not how these things work. There's a reason just anyone can't run around using the Red Cross symbol. It may seem silly to keep it out of a video game, but it is an important symbol that saves a lot of lives and I'm fine with it being purple if it helps the red cross symbol sacred or whatever.

One purchase unlocks all past, present, and (planned) future colors (no guarantee for colors after robo fortune).

Might as well start making notes about Beowulf colors here

  • Batman (looks like the Batman Incorporated costume)
  • William T. Riker (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

176 screenshots... I might do a series for one of the palettes to see how it turns out. I think one of the contest winners has a blood dress so that will be interesting. But I won't make promises for the whole 176. At least, not in one go. I'm already trying to resist the itch to document Albus and Horace palettes. Maybe someone can whisper in Lab Zero's ear to include palette examples in the next update to the Digital Art Compendium.

How I loathe to appear to post twice in a row, but there is enough content here to make this non-edit worthy. Here's some Eliza palette pose data for two colors with simultaneous Albus and Horace documentation.

For those keeping score at home, some of the designs are by community members that got noticed in a recent contest:
HP = Greyscale's blood dress
P+P = Skullmageddon's cocktail dress
HK = Rifka's suit

Looking at Albus and Horace, I like all the complimentary details. Some I recognize, like Spike and Jet themes for the #16 Faye color. However I'm only half-sure about the #10 Crimson Viper color. Albus looks like Rufus (fellow Street Fighter IV newbie like C. Viper), but what of Horace? Super Saiyan Goku (Dragonball Z) springs to mind before any Street Fighter.

That does look like Rufus and SSJ Goku. I have to use that color more often now.

Also, thank you! On th etopic of the dresses, I really like how they can make the dress she's wearing look completely different with slight color variations.

It's a voice actors reference set.
Michelle Ruff - C. Viper and Eliza
Christopher Corey Smith - Rufus and Albus
Sean Schemmel - Goku and Horace

A&H also reference other Kill la Kill characters in the Ragyo palette. Albus is colored like Ragyo's secretary (Houhouoohhouooooohhouohouhmaru or whatever) and Horace is colored like the sentient suits that made Ragyo's army.

In the Dio Brando palette, both servants are colored in a way to represent Dio's humanoid stand, the World.

Daisy feels like a weird choice for Peacock. I think the only similarity is they both have bell dresses. But, new color, can't complain.

The pallete seems like it missed some opportunities.

Her ribbon could've passed off as Daisy's brooch instead of being solid orange.
George and Lenny could've been Bob-ombs.
Kuribo's shoe could've been colored like a Kuribo's shoe
and so forth...

Not meaning to take the piss out of the backer responsible for it, but it has potential that it has not actualized. And I think that may be the case due to "laziness." Not actual laziness, moreso putting forth the concept of "Daisy pallete for Peacock" and kinda letting it float around. Maybe they were rushed or something, I don't know and can't really know the backstory to it unless they come forward and talk about it.

Of course if it wasn't intended to be Princess Daisy then this entire post is silly and unnecessary.

It was intended to be Daisy, unless Mike was mistaken when he showed it on stream. And yeah, now that you mention it, there does seem like a lot of lost potential. Hopefully they make those edits at some point, though.
