The Wulf Den, 2nd Ed. Back in the Pack!

Hey being half happy is better then despising a character..trust me I've had it happen to me.

I think Beowulf is absolute hilarious, but some of his animations look really odd to me. The standing idle looks really...awkward honestly and the animation of Beo's face during the grendal arm attacks and the way it contorts are just not appealing to. Some of the minor frames of his animations, like j.lp, look kinda wierd (in j.lp, beowulf has a murderous and evil look on his face that doesn't really fit with the character honestly)

Aside from weird animations I think Beo has some of the best lines, a pretty good story that made me laugh, and a fun playstyle. He's probably really high up in my favorite characters :D

There's nothing wrong with his standing idle though? It's got some of the smoothest and most realistic animation for an idle in the game. As for arm attacks, guess what, real people have malleable faces that actually change, and that's taken to an extreme with Beowulf to emphasize his attacks. Lastly, j.LP is an eye rake, a very mean and underhanded pro wrestling move, so of course he would put on that face, it's very much in character.

just because its realistic doesn't meant I can't find it look a bit odd. I get the basis of the move, again, I just don't think it looks very nice personally. Maybe I just have bad taste. I dunno.

I know what your talking about its the constant hand movements in the idle animation that I find odd. The problem for me though is it just looks bland and generic. Him and Big Band have the most borning idle animations, for Big Band I have no idea what you could do to make it better but for Beowulf you could've had him holding his chair in one arm or at least have some more minor animations (like his fur blowing for example).

Its not a matter if it's not smooth every character has an equal amount of smoothness to their animations but I just feel like Beowulfs idle is generic but that's just my opinion.

Well for starters I generally disagree.

I'd say both Band's and Beo's idles show what there is to be expected from the character. Band's is slow, heavy and intimidating in the same way a mountain is intimidating.
Beowulf's on the other hand presents a focused wrestling stance, with both his prepared arms and concentrated look saying "imma grapple ya".

But that's for opinions - there are also more technical reasons why I think both idles fit the characters. It's important to note that a character's idle stance isn't accidental. In most cases in Skullgirls it smoothly transits back and forward between everything else than can be done from/into the stance. Idle->attack->idle, idle->walk forward->idle, idle->crouch->idle, etc. Changing an idle would require adjusting the whole moveset's animations to fit it.

It would be especially noticeable in Beowulf's case - he can't hold the chair in one hand, because a lot of his attacks (punches, grapples) require having free hands, after all. And the chair itself isn't really a one-hand weapon like Parasoul's Krieg, it's practical either in both hands (for smashing with it) or in neither (as in on the back, to have free hands for grappling), hence why Beowulf switches between the two.

I've avoided starting a thread like this because I didn't want The Wulf Pack to be associated with certain less reputable character threads,
HEY
Leave Squigly out of this!
She's too booty-ful

Alright point taken I didn't think of it like that.

Peacock wants that belt.

I'm new to forums but I decided to make my grand entrance at the wulfpack thread. with that out of the way...

When I first saw Beowulf I didn't like him but honestly after playing him and his story I really enjoyed him.

Don't know if i'm in the right place to say this though. i'm also slow to reply to things.

Strange, I'm quite the opposite of you... Nah but I still like Beowulf, just not as much.

Anyway, welcome!

What exactly happened to the wulf den thread?

Mods didn't like how wild the pack ran.

And it was primarily a pre-release thread

so naturally, he was released so the thread was at the time superfluous
yay, boring actual reasons

so uh yeah. Got some free time to work on some stuff for the wulf. here's a sketch of what it is. Erm, if you like it you can have the finished product tomorrow night.

oh should probably tag you @Denizen

Edit: damn it i just noticed the hand holding the sickle, the thumb is in front of the handle when it should be behind it. Oh well I can fix that no problem.

Bro why you tagging me? You know I'm watching this thread, I made it.
Forreal tho that line work looks great, can't wait to see it finished.

i don't know why I'm tagging you. Just making sure... I've been dead, which also reminds me kick off the old Ninja from being on the administrator position in the New Wulf Order group. cause you know... that account is dead. (ish)

It was probably the 3 page conversation we had about dicks.
Goddamnit I wish I was apart of that conversation.

MEMES
I dont like it when Beowulf is associated with shit tier wrestlers like John Cena.

Didn't I tell you to chill about this before?

You probably did and I forgot about it 30 minutes later.

Awesome Beowulf art.

Hm... is this implying that Beowulf is associated with communism?

Hm... is this implying that Beowulf is associated with communism?
mmmmmmmmmhhhhh maybe? I just kinda see it as an alternate universe kinda thing. Sorta like Soviet SuperMan, but in this case Comrade Red Wulf fights to entertain mother Russia's people and spread the word of the Red Flag. Oh ho ho ho ho! AND PEROGIES! THEY GOOD FOR YOU!

Really awesome...but...aren't, like, all adult Gigans supposed to be large if not gigantic?

I posted the commission I had @bowlerntophats do for me on twitter, for those that don't want to go to tumblr.
For those who haven't read the original poem, Brecca the Bronding is a character who was only mentioned. He was close friend of Beowulf and is rumored to have been the only person who has bested him in competition, specifically a swimming race. Beowulf denies this though, so the truth isn't clear.

I had my own idea for a Skullgirls version of that character, but Kai's female dwarf Gigan beats it by a mile, I really love this.

I'll just post it here, 'cause I don't think I've even shared the details with anyone but the artist.

No man or beast knows
where Beowulf Zanzibar Hrethel was birthed,
appearing as if from the mists one day
in search of a Gigan most specific.
A wrestler of such great renown
that she had been forced to withdraw from public life.

A wrestler of such skill, strength, and courage
that her very form defied nature itself:
Brecca the Unbeatable, Brecca the Dwarf.
Though heads above most humans
she stood in the shadow of her countrymen
though never for long.

Beowulf eventually found his aim
in a small cave, far from any Gigan city.
Upon first sight, it is said she nearly settled upon killing the young man
before reconsidering at the last moment

Why have you come?
she spat, the battered youth rising to his feet.

I have come to train under you,
the greatest wrestler known to man or Gigan!

He beamed in admiration, his pain insignificant.

Bah! I've no time for a soft, pink human wretch like you.
Begone!

But Beowulf knelt before her
and pleaded for 3 days and nights
never once relenting

In frustration, Brecca agreed to train the boy
expecting no more than a handful of days
before the young human would wither and break

Every day, she would strike him
demean him
and wrestle him into submission
unleashing punishment the likes of which
would have reduced any man
or any Gigan
to pitiful tears

But after the 30th day
of Beowulf's grateful acceptance of her treatment
Brecca realized this was no mere opportunist
here to ride the coattails of greatness

and so
his training began

Techniques, holds, tricks
all were revealed and drilled
until they were as much a part of Beowulf
as they were of Brecca

With every passing month, a closeness grew,
that of teacher and student
warrior and rival,
friend and companion.

And at dusk on the 1111th day
Brecca greated Beowulf for the evening's training
but instead told him
Lo, there is no more that I can teach.
The path to greatness is more than training,
and if you truly intend to follow that path,
it leads away from here.

They locked eyes, and no words
would even again be needed between the two.
The sounds of their epic final wrestling match
were heard across the valley
though some claim
it may have been, "wrestling."

Upon the morning light,
Beowulf departed,
never to return,
the knowledge and skill of Brecca the Unbeatable
strengthening every fiber of his being.
Literally wrote this in all in, "poem," format just now, because nerd. That full name is definitely a joke :P

Brecca is a dwarf, standing a puny 7 feet tall ;)
I completely skipped the mention of her being a dwarf in the first part. I totally know how to read guys, honest D:

Wow, so many references to the poem. I love it!

Talking about fanfiction, I want to put The Saga of Beowulf here as well. Yeah I put it in many places but it seems that no one really cares about it. There's only one constructive critique to be honest.

I still wonder how they adapted the epic poem of Beowulf into a wrestler with an unbreakable chair! That doesn't stop me from loving him tho u3u

No Beowulf fic would be complete without paying homage to the late great Seamus Heaney. :PUN:
