Them's Fightin' Herds

Yeah, my notebook runs the indivisible prototype it's crazy [emoji14]
Yeah, take SG for example, i would preffer to find people on the xbox live, than playing on my pc version, without 3d backgrounds. :/

But pcs are really the most universal thing right now for fighters.
Rather than trying to say one thing is better, which will always have reasons against that, I'd rather see more console/pc cross play being an option.

Skullgirls has it, street fighter v will have it as will killer instinct. That's the way to go.

Skullgirls has it
Skullgirls has cross-play for PS3/PS4/Vita and Windows/Linux/Mac, but doesn't have and at this point likely won't have cross-play between PC and any consoles.

As cool as the idea is in theory, it's easier said than done. I don't know all the inside details, but from what I understand it requires the type of funds and the level of negotiations with Sony/Microsoft that is not within reach for a small indie team like Mane6.

The only thing I'll point out is that just because most people have computers for the reasons you state doesn't mean they're all capable of playing this generation of games.

Like @The Dave pointed out, you don't need to run games at max settings to run them well. Ultimately if you look at a PC as a gaming console + a computer, the cost is comparable if not better. Spend what you would for a windows computer and add the cost of a PS4 into it and I guarantee that it will run any fighter on a low enough setting (excepting the "next-gen" fighters like SFV.

Anyway, the important bit to me regarding TFH is that if it were to go to console, you're going to take a community of a few hundred people and split it 3-5 ways. Imagine if you could consolidate the entire SG community on PC. It would be larger than MKX on PC. Indie games don't necessarily do better by providing multi-console support.

No clue what xPlatform is, but PC is shit for tournament play.

xPlatform = Cross-platform. So like PC players playing with PS3 players.

And it doesn't have to be. SC2, CS, LoL, and DotA are the most popular e-sports out there, all of which are on PC. There's no reason FG can't make it work.

stick and controller drivers.

stick and controller drivers.

Ultimately, that's a simple solution. The paradigm would shift and people would buy compatible controllers to whatever they are using. Most 360 controllers are plug and play (don't know about xBone) and many have dual functionality (Qanba Q4). Hardware is and will always be up to the competitor, no? If I were to show up to a BB tournament hoping to use my wiiMote, they'd tell me to fuck off. Or if I were to show up to a Smash tourny hoping to use my 360 controller...no dice.

There would be growing pains early as no one would like to see their $100-$200(or more) investment go to shit, but that would be short term. Long term, I think it would ultimately be better as there would be less issues as the hardware would eventually be standardized outside of the handful of games that aren't on PC (arcysys...).

Moreover, you run into less issues with nonsense like "will my ps3 controller work on the ps4".

Edited to add: I'm not saying there wouldn't be issues. I'm just saying those issues are tractable.

If people care about this game enough, then equipment will be hauled to play wherever it needs to go. If online tournaments are necessary sometimes, people will do that for fun as well.

The FGC has proven to be super adaptable so I don't see why this game's chances for serious competition should be lessened whatsoever if the passion is there.

Yeah not getting into this console vs PC discussion personally right now. It would both piss off some PC gamers and derail the thread which I kind of want to avoid.

Did they show a picture of the goat yet?

We're a tough breed to piss off. Especially considering we are now the premier "console" for next-gen fighters :P

On topic: Not to the best of my knowledge. Just a tiny blurb about gameplay style that being able to stand on walls.

Nope! They don't even have a design in mind yet. But we do have an idea of what the goat's gimmick is, and it has been confirmed to be female.

The mane 6 were going to be female to follow tradition from the beginning, but the developers including Lauren have said they would like to see some male characters in the mix as well.

So it isn't anymore of a girls only club than Skullgirls was.

I'd like to see zero console ports. At least for the foreseeable future. The PC is legitimately poised to become the go-to FG system.

Nope. Hope as hard as you want, but no. And probably not ever, until consoles are no longer produced. I wouldn't endorse PC as the platform of choice for any fighting game tournament unless the game is only available on PC.
Standardized controller support, standardized input and display lag, standardized output, standardized input device polling rate, standardized existing bugs, and the fact that there is not an underlying multipurpose OS that can randomly decide to delay execution of the game thread or polling of the input devices, are all things that make consoles infinitely superior when any sort of real importance is placed on the game's outcome.

[edit]
Consoles, like most real-time embedded systems, place strict limits on the processing time the OS can take up, what processes can interrupt the currently focused process, etc. The widely supported PC OS's make no such guarantee.

We ran Skullgirls on PC one year at NEC and it was a disaster, console is better for tournaments for all the reasons Mike just stated

Anecdotally, I've been to/ran a couple small tournaments on PC and everything worked fine! PC's can be used for tournaments but there's a lot of issues to work out on the major scale that need to be resolved or compromised with first. It'd have to be a while, so all you can hope for is Alex Valle's WNF Alienware adventure to get better as time goes on to get the ball moving on any PC running front.

What do you mean by standardized controller support? The PC has almost near universal support for xbox controllers with the added bonus that most PS3 controllers work as well. In other words, a Windows based system offers most (all?) of the controller support an xbox has and then some.

As far as display lag, isn't that completely predicated on the TV or monitor? And standardized input/output.. isn't that standardized by the USB? Even if it isn't, would some minor standardization requirements fix that completely?

I do agree that an OS has more considerations than a console, but don't we have a long precedent of it not really mattering as much? The largest esports games throughout history have all been PC: SC1/2, WC3, DotA, LoL, CS/CS:GO. While they don't all have the same requirements as a fighter would (LoL clearly doesn't need to be as tight as a fighter), others do (CS is unbelievably twitch based). So if the largest games (with the largest purses) can all make do, why can't fighters?

In any case, I still don't think it would be wise for TFH to move to console. It is very likely to be niche and splitting the community just doesn't seem wise to me.

I'm just gonna quantify my statements as not being about TFH specifically and about stuff in general. And I feel Mike's is the same way.

And the reason why esports works the way it does is that none of the machines are provided by the players. If FGC tournaments were bigger or had somebody providing all the hardware then it would definitely be more feasible to do PC torunaments. Kind of like what Valle was trying to do at the let WNF.

Ok stop this console vs pc derail nonsense. This is hardly the thread for this. Posts will start getting purged and infractions will start being tossed out if this is gonna continue. Like Mike and a few others I can probably bring a lot to that discussion even if it is opening a can of worms, but this is not the place for it.

Only reason the console was initially brought up here in the first place was because it was a listed "and beyond" goal and would have expanded the potential donator pool which I doubt anyone can argue against this. Now it went off tangent with X platform is superior blah blah blah.

Enough. Stick it relevant enough to TFH.

Oh, the goat got funded, that's nice. I'm really disappointed that they don't even have a picture or really any details about the goat, though.

I don't mind personally. As in, sure, I'd like that, but I understand why it didn't happen. I reckon the team didn't really expect the crowdfund to reach all the way to the goat DLC, and once getting the goat started looking probable, Lauren was (and is) busy preparing lore sections for the first 6 characters.

I believe in not rushing the artist (within reason). There is still 1,5 years or so before the game with 6 characters is finished and efforts can move towards the goat. I take Lauren/the team coming up with a good design with time, rather than hastily drawing and writing something now for the sake of it, only to after a month or two realise "damn, that was pretty lame compared to what we have in mind now once things calmed down".

They didn't even have an explanation of what they wanted the playstyle to even be, let alone what it will look like. It just seems like they didn't look much thought into the goat, and that isn't really great if they're asking for money. I'd rather have had a quick explanation of what they were aiming for that will probably change, but I understand they were probably busy. Eh... Oh well, it was funded. I wish there was some kind of information, though.

Hahahah wow I forgot this, I'm very silly

They didn't even have an explanation of what they wanted the playstyle to even be, let alone what it will look like.
"She has seemingly impossible balancing capabilities, allowing her to stand firmly on any steep surface, including walls! Use her magic to run at high speeds across the stage and up walls to rush down and literally walk all over your competition!"

So she seems to be a highly mobile rushdown character who can walk on walls. It's not a very detailed description but it's also not too far from what we got for Leduc, for example.
("Most of Leduc’s attacks would be electrical and stun bolt themed. He's capable of charging his attacks for stronger versions, use static electricity to hang from walls and ceilings, or magnetically attract and repulse opponents. They may cause a stun status effect as well, since his name comes from "The Nightmare State of Leduc," paralysis livestock can experience due to stun bolts.")
We did have those gameplay inspirations for the Skullgirls characters, too. But those were also very vague and not final.

It's indeed sad that we don't have any sketches or anything like that for the goat. But I don't think anybody really expected it to be possible for her to be funded until it was too late for them to finish a design. Oh well, we'll have to wait a bit for that. Hopefully it won't take long for the reveal.

Agreed, but for me it's because of the amount of work for Mane6. There are no TRCs on PC, after all.

(deleted and re-submitted this post as I recalled a few things more, but didn't want to double-post nor have people miss the edit)

To add to what Sotherius and Ryin said about the goat, a couple more bits mentioned during some stream. Note that it was the team mostly thinking out loud, none of this is in any way final or decided upon:
- When asked if the goat can stand upside down on the ceiling, the answer was that initially they didn't want that to be a thing, but after some pondering it is not entirely out of the question.
- As far as physical size goes, the goat will probably be smaller than other characters.
- When casually talking about why goats are awesome, someone admired how goats can eat anything, as well as are able to stand on anything or anyone (hmmm) they want. Will any of these be important? Who knows.
- Out of the 7 characters of the roster, the goat is a clear favourite for one of the members of the team. It completely escaped me which one of the guys said it, though.
- It was said that - not now, but maybe after the goat is finished - they might say which character this would be if she was in Fighting is Magic. Which implies that perhaps already way back when a character from the cartoon was eventually meant to be the FiM "goat". Speculation ahoy.

With such a limited roster, it had to be either a regular character or a fan favorite. Most likely a pony so they could use the same basic model and work from there. Only a unicorn type with a magic spell would functionally work with the whole wall climbing mechanic as it is something that Earth and even Pegasus ponies simply couldn't do.

So Trixie obviously doing a magic trick.

Though initial roster was limited, loose plans for additional chars included a cast as big as 17 or so characters, including a couple non-ponies.
The planned roster was purposely based only on season 1, so that narrows down potential inspirations. Some possibilities:
- Trixie, for the reasons mentioned above.
- Derpy, because also fan favourite + her ending up walking on walls following the joke logic of "I just don't know what went wrong".
- Gilda the griffon, as she could claw herself into the wall.
- Little Strongheart the buffalo (had to look up this one's name), as she was both small and proved to be very agile during the train scene. I could see her maybe not walking on a wall, but perhaps jumping towards -> jumping off one.

Discord could also walk on walls no problem if he wanted to + is goat-ish, but I recall the team specifically confirming he will not be part of the roster (partly because season 2, partly because he'd be a hell to animate and fit in the game, partly because how does one even balance Discord).

Discord should have been the final boss in the original concept, tbh.
But, back on topic.
I really hope there's at least a 2-character beta by NEC. I got some people I wanna play there.

Paprika's story was everything I had hoped for. I knew voting for her in the lore poll was a good decision.

Alright!
So by now, all 6 character lore chapters have been uploaded to the Mane6 website.

Mane6 also held their second Work Stream on Saturday, January 16th, and uploaded a recording of said stream to YouTube on January 19th. The stream was uploaded in two parts, each about 1 hour and 15 minutes long.

-Oleander now has a few more colored frames (but not Fred)
-Velvet might have a new Magic ability
-Implementation of Pom and her puppies

-Animation work (mostly on Velvet's launcher)
