Valentine Robo Fortune
Hi all,

After a tumultuous time deciding on a first character, I've settled on Ms Fortune.

Being my first fighting game, I've decided to limit myself, at first, to a few basic things. The idea is that these self-imposed limits will both simplify decision-making and allow me to focus on fundamentals first and foremost.

Currently, I'm allowing myself:
  • one basic BnB (@CaioLugon's midscreen head-on)
  • three normals for hit confirms (s.LP, cr.LK, and j.LK)
  • one special (L Fiber Upper)
  • only head-on mode
This means, no resets, burst-baits, etc. What's the point of all the fancy stuff if I can't play smart and get in an initial hit? The idea behind the normals is generally fast options that punish careless approaches. All of the moves can turn into the BnB at various points while avoiding max undizzy.

For example:
s.LP > s.LP > s.LK (confirm into BnB)

My hope is to develop a strong neutral game before moving on to more advanced tech.

Are these limits a good idea? Or am I pointlessly handicapping myself?

Played some quick matches today on PS4. Thankfully ran into a few of the same people.

Obviously A LOT to improve on, but I think the most important things right now are:
  • Not dropping my combos (easily fixed with lab time and more matches)
  • Moving with intention (and just making use of Ms Fortune's amazing mobility)
  • Getting out of pressure (I'm almost always on the defense)
Onwards and upwards!

Remember to pushblock to help escape pressure!! If it is a multi hit move, you have to push block the last hit or else you will never get out.

It seems like you're having a really hard time pinning your opponent down. Since the BnB you want to practice starts with cr.lk, you're going to need the enemy to be on the ground. I suggest doing two things Instant Air Dash J.hp and dashing into cr.lk to get your combo started(making use of Ms Fortune's amazing mobility).

So here are things from your matches:

A lot of times things were punishable (for example early in the video when Valentine whiffs Savage Bypass), but you didn't attempt to punish them. Learn what you can punish when, and always look for an opportunity.
You don't attack much. If you are too cautious it is too easy for your opponent to put you in pressure. Get accustomed to your different moves and when to use them. As an add-on to this, your neutral definitely needs some work (understandable, considering you're new to the game), so keep that in mind. You're too defensive; you main objective with a rushdown like Ms. Fortune is to get your opponent in pressure. Spend more time closing distance than creating it. You don't really do much in neutral other than move backwards; keep in mind you want to move forward towards your opponent, not away from them.

You got a few hits you could have confirmed into a combo, but you weren't able to react to the hit in time, or you just didn't know how. Learn what you can confirm into a combo and how, so that way you can do the most damage in your matches. You can get a combo off of a hit that isn't your starter, c.LK.

Your defense isn't very good, since you don't seem to know how to pushblock. Pushblocking is when you press two punch buttons while in blockstun, and it moves your opponent a distance away. There are a few other mechanics surrounding it, PBGC and Absolute Guard, so take your time to learn about pushblocking, as it is a very integral part of your defense. On the topic of defense, you struggle against mix-ups quite a bit, especially blocking high. Take things slow and watch what your opponent is doing, and how they are going to hit you.
You don't use meter much; keep in mind most supers have invincible start up, so they can be used as reversals.

Thanks! To be honest, I forgot about pushblock during those matches (whoops); I'll try and use it more often in the future. The IAD j.HP dash c.LK sounds useful. I'll try and work that in. Also, not sure if I can do it from an IAD, but I heard j.LK>j.MK is a good pressure string, so I'll see how to best work that in as well.

I'm trying to narrow down my potential moveset so that I can better understand how each works. Too many options right away leads to confusion for me. I think a lot of the learning when to punish and what to use will come from more matches, but, to facilitate that, I'll actually try and punish more rather than waiting indefinitely. If it's the wrong time, I'm sure my opponent will let me know (painfully).

I'll work on being more proactive with my playstyle. Going to practice a few approaches and pressure/block strings.

I think many of my dropped combos were due to choking midmatch. Things that I can do in the lab don't always transfer exactly to real matches. Planning on getting the timing more ingrained in muscle memory through more lab, and then controlling my nerves through more real matches. I'll also do more practice starting combos (if possible) from all the moves I use.

I forgot to pushblock. Will work on remembering in the future. Planning on making a list of small goals to focus on before every match— make things less about winning and more about improving. Working on blocking mix-ups better as well, I think I did a little better with that in the Val/Double match. Hopefully that will improve as I understand other characters moves more.

Thanks for the response! I appreciate the time you took to write it.
