I'm pretty new to fighting games, and I'm hungry to play all of them! Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to just jump into them, especially when you're new. Sure, some terminology and mechanics might be shared between fighting games, but they're actually all extremely different. So I thought we should make a forum to help Skullgirls players transition into other fighting games, and to help other players transition into Skullgirls!

So, how can we help people transition into other games? For starters, I think listing the character archetypes / styles is a fine place to start (Vortex, Shoto, Grappler, Charge, etc. and the differences between them). Also, what characters are good or bad for beginners to start out with. Other things we can mention are characters that feel similar (if any), tier lists (maybe sample-sized ones if the roster's are too big), most dangerous moves in the game, and more general, yet basic information about the game.

So, how's this gonna work? I'm gonna tune into here at least once a day, and I'll pick up questions and answers and stuff them into my post. The post will be kept nice and tidy using the spoiler tabs, that way you don't have to search too hard for the game you want to know about.

I'mma need some help from more experienced players though. Like I said, I'm new to fighting games, so I can't run around acting like I know what I'm talking about. I'll also try to get some players from other games to give me some information for this. Even if you aren't looking to play other games, you might want to check here, ya might learn something!

All the games will have this information:
- Character list
- Tier list
- Secondary name to describe a character, in case your bad at remembering names
- Archetypes (feels somewhat similar to what characters)
- Playstyles (defensive, rushdown, grappler, etc)
- Good players that play that character
- Good beginning characters
- Character's lore affiliation (good, bad, etc.)
- Platforms (PC, Xbox One, PS4, Wii U, etc.)
- Game systems (EX meters, Rage, Tag-team, Air dash, 4-button, etc)
- Game modes (Arcade, Training, Tutorial, Lobby, etc)
- Game's age

Where's DFC though? :(
never heard of that game before. I'd like to add it, but that's the max amount of things I can add to the poll :c
I'll keep an extra tally here:

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax : 1
Super Smash Bros. Melee : 0

Ok thanks.

Reasons to play Vampire Savior by Squire Grooktook:

Probably one of the fastest fighting games ever made in terms of both pacing/flow of the matches and actual speed/flashiness.

Simple but deep with aggressive combat that intuitively rewards defense while keeping rushdown visceral and bone-breakingly strong.

Incredibly diverse characters, all really well balanced and with great designs and animation. They all have countless unique tools they can utilize in a variety of ways, so matches are incredibly dynamic and interesting (like Skullgirls).

And Lilith is cute.

I know the basics of Skullgirls, as I have 200 hours, so no needing help there. I just feel very stuck in a rut lately on just how the fundamentals of this game work. It does feel like this game is heavily revolved around combos (a lot like MvC it feels) and playing the neutral really heavily, but I just don't understand how to adapt my playstyle to that. I'm having a rough time explaining what I'm having trouble with here, so I'll try my best. I know how to play basic and intermediate neutral and know how to use footsies, pokes, and my best combos are around 30 hits. I do feel like combos happen ALL the time however, and that a lot of the fundamentals and neutral resetting things in Skullgirls happen within the combos, I think.

Should I really be focusing on my combo game, how to adapt to mixups in combos, and learn more advanced and situational stuff since that is what this game seems to be centered around? Or am I a complete idiot that isn't delving deeper into this game?

Shouldn't this thread be about transitioning from other games to SG since it's in the beginner forum?

I would like to know more about the Vampire Savior. Just bought Darkstalkers Resurrection and I'm learning BB Hood and will move on to Lord Raptor.

Most of the stuff that truly matters you learn by grinding out matches for a very very very long time.
Learning good neutral in Skullgirls takes a long time and there's a lot to cover.

When to do this, when to do that.
When it's a safe to try this thing, when it's a bad idea to do that thing.

Most of it is learned by playing other people who are better than you and learning from your mistakes.

If you know your combos, resets, and important situational combos, then all you should really focus on is grinding out real matches with people.
You'll learn a lot faster if the person you play is better than you, because they will punish you for your habbits and mistakes and force you adapt and play better to hit them.

"Darkstalkers 3" and "Darkstalkers Ressurection" are the same game..? They're both Vampire Savior.
The latter one is a rerelease on PS3 which happens to also have Vampire Hunter, but then.. that'd need to be in the poll.

I also find it a bit weird to have 3 BB versions up there? You only have one USF4 entry, not also SF4AE and SSF4 and SF4 (cus it'd be silly).

Is the MvC entry really about MvC1? Or about the entire series? Or about 2 and you forgot the number?

What is the poll even for, I am a bit confused..

Tier Lists are irrelevant for beginners (or rather: A "Beginner" Tier List is gonna look drastically different from an "Expert" one)
