So....UNDERTALE huh? The heck is it?

This game is a throwback to the world-renowned MOTHER/Earthbound series, with elements of bullet hell to avoid enemy attacks. A quirky fun game with quirky fun characters.
Oh, and there is also crippling sadness and dark moments galore. The game's story changes differently with your actions you take during the game. How you fight, how you explore, how you interact with the world, all are factors that can affect your story.

Interested? Want to try it out yourself? There's a playable demo on their main site! But be warned: Its absolutely best if you play this game without spoilers or prior knowledge. Try it out, do things differently with each playthrough.

When's this game coming out? As of now, we don't know... but it's scheduled for... OH wait! Just got this in yesterday!

September 15th is the day you can explore UNDERTALE's world to its fullest! So give the demo a test drive to gauge your interest!

Sorry but Mario Maker and Armikrog are on my September to buy list.
Also Citizens of Earth is the only Mother spiritual successor you need.
Or Mother 4, that works too. (and it'll be free)

Yay, a release date! I've been looking forward to this game ever since I found the demo (which was unfortunately right after the Kickstarter ended).

I am especially looking forward to getting to hear the game's soundtrack. TobyFox's music is amazing, and even before Undertale, TobyFox had written a number of awesome pieces for Homestuck. The music in the demo was fantastic, ESPECIALLY the boss theme at the end, so my expectations are high for the full release.

So, just curious: For those who played thee demo, what ending did you get on your first playthrough?

Please use spoilers when talking about your playthroughs! Really important!

    Show Spoiler
I...I killed Toriel by accident. Thinking of this game as a game was a terrible idea, and I got the neutral end because of it. Flowey even taunted me at the very end, saying I didn't even try to show her mercy at all...;~~; I went back to try again but...

FLOWEY NEVER FORGETS YOUR PAST SINS.

Same for me. Most people seem to get that ending on their first run.

    Show Spoiler
This is both because almost (myself included) everyone assumes you are forced to kill her, and the game either doesn't tell you directly or at all that you can use Spare when an enemy is at low health to let them flee.

On a side note, getting the "kill everything" run is actually pretty hard from what I heard, since you also need to kill the enemy near the beginning of the demo that Toriel will otherwise force force to flee.

Anyone else get Undertale yet? I am currently an hour and a half in... and it is absolutely amazing. I love this game so far.

The combat is stellar, the art style is an excellent homage to Mother and Earthbound, the music is super good... and the writing, good gosh the writing is some of the best I've seen in a long time.

Too late. Already beat the game and got the True Ending now.

    Bleck's thoughts (open)
    So....my thoughts on the game....

I have not fallen so in love with a game in years. I did a pacifist run so every encounter was a new puzzle for me to solve. And I loved almost every single one. Every Monster had their own personality, their own stories. And the designs? Some made me laugh from the audacity of it all (Never stop petting the Lesser Dog),some were just adorable, and some were....something else. Game is chocked FULL of Humor, even when you'd least expect it. Even the bosses get a chance to make you smirk in one way or the other.

The story is also really well done, building up bit by bit before the final sections of the game. More pieces of the puzzle fit in, bit by bit, leading up to a heart-breaking climax, Which leads to one of the best boss fights I've had in recent years. Truly well done, and really lives up to all its hype.

My only, ONLY gripe is the game is short. I played it for a little over 12 hours straight and got the true ending already... And after lets just say the true end does a good job of making you not want to redo it all over...

All in all, fantastic game, had a blast all the way through, and will recommend this to everyone.

I still haven't gotten the True Ending as of yet, so I can't read @CountofBleck spoilered content, but for now, here are my thoughts on what I believe is supposed to be the second best ending:

    Juju_for_President's thoughts (open)
Undertale is an absolute treasure. This game is an incredible journey, and a brilliant and terrifying deconstruction of RPG tropes.

One thing that I greatly value from this game, that I find a little difficult to properly talk about, is the surprises/twists/revelations. Too many games nowadays, due to both less-than perfect writing and gamers' collective genre savvy, don't have enough surprises that really 'get' a player. Even if the game is fun, there aren't enough times where you get to go "OH WOW! I didn't see that coming!".

I greatly value the ability and opportunity while playing Undertale to be surprised by a game, whether in the form of a hilarious punch-line, a shocking revelation that makes sense the more you think about it, or the sudden formula shift that turns a fight upside-down and makes me panic super hard. I thought the game was super strong in this regard... until I reached The Throne Room, at which point, the game decided to become the most twisty, surprising, revelation-filled 30 or so minutes that I have ever experienced in a video game.

I counted, and in the time between first meeting Asgore and landing my first attack on him, there were SEVEN revelations I did not see coming, and some of them took me stepping away from the game to realize.

So, most important thing: Holy moly mother of Toriel's Butterscotch Cinnamon Pie... Omega Flowey the scariest final boss in any video game I have ever played. The phrase "Nightmare Fuel" is thrown around a lot, but I would honestly not be too surprised if Omega Flowey actually sparked some real rough nights for players. The use of bad clip art (or whatever that stuff was) and unfittingly fluid movement was so effectively grotesque, unnatural, and aesthetically contrasting that it made it into a horrifying abomination.

I knew I was gonna spare Flowey no matter what, but I honestly considered the other option more than I expected to.

Edit: Also, the forced game shutoff before Omega Flowey? It totally got me. I was starring at my desktop for like two minutes straight, slack-jawed in utter shock and horror, before I even thought to start up the game again.

I won't spoil anything, but this game is definitely 'game of the year' material, the gameplay is original, the characters and story are very good, there's tons of sillyness around, the soundtrack is great, there are many interesting twist all around...but maybe what surprised me the most were the attention to details : The tiniest of thing or combination of thing you do may be referenced much later, and only for the flavor. It really makes the world feels alive!

One of the most uplifting game i played!

Just finished the True Ending. I can safely say that this is one of, if not the single best, RPG I have ever played (in my mind, it's still competing with one over game).

    Never played the mother series.

THIS WAS THE BEST GAME EVER it even made me cry and I never cry that's how great it is. Easily a top 5 videogame.

also this game isn't a really long rpg but for $10 the length was great and the replayability is very high because of how the game works.

and the characters oh my god

The Genocide Run is horrifying. It is the equivalent of choosing an option in Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door to just murder all the partner characters. And getting the True Ending beforehand adds context that makes the run so much worse.

It makes me kind of glad that the ending of the run is

I think it's better then Earthbound.

Than again, I'm a weirdo who always thought Earthbound was great but a tad over-rated (for me). But to answer the question, no you don't need any familiarity with Earthbound to appreciate it, just a willingness to enjoy some quirky-ass shit (if you like Skullgirls you're probably already good).

I think Trails In The Sky is still my favorite rpg on Steam though (in both writing and gameplay). Otherwise Undertale is a leauge above everything else in the genre on Steam (although I haven't played Transistor yet, but I've heard mixed reviews so whatever, maybe I'll give that a shot after Deadly Premonition).

That's the thing. The trailer with its internet references and quirky jokes puts a sour taste in my mouth. People are saying there's a lot of humor in the story, but I have a feeling it is going to fall flat on me. Even the "features" section of the store page makes me cringe.

I can tell you first hand that the 10's, 8's, and 4/5s are no lie. Whether you like making freinds, in it for the plot, funny characters, or even the traditional LV grinder, Undertale has something for everyone.

I never played any Earthbound game in my life, but that still didn't stop me from laughing and crying on this wonderful and short game.

Oh don't you fret about that. The game is very clever with its writing and joke setups. What the trailer's real purpose is keep a mask of happy fun times while hiding the fact that it rivals mother 3 with Feel Bombs.

I went in a little bit wary of that sort of thing, but honestly it's not that bad. Most of the humor comes from puns and classic slap stick. A lot of it is very character driven too, which is great. Reference gags and internet humor aren't overdone and aren't any more prominent then they are in Skullgirls (probably less).

To put it simply, if Fortune's cat puns make you want to not play SG, you might have a problem with some of the humor. Otherwise it's fine.

There's some fourth wall breaking stuff that I'm personally not fond of and think the game would be better off without (Earthbound did it better IMO), but that's a different story and a personal and minor complaint anyway.

On that note I also recommend Trails In The Sky. Very well written and feelsy. Starts out technically slow and slice of life (but with great character interaction and humor) but progresses at a great pace and really becomes something special. Gameplay also opens up quite nicely over time too.

Requires a LOT of reading though. You could fill a book with all the text in that game (complete opposite of Undertale in that regard, even though it has a similar warmth and sweetness to it).

I really was loving every moment of it. I thought Papyrus, Toriel, sans, and were Alphys were some of my favorite characters. For the battle system, I loved avoiding projectiles when the enemies attacked. The game was like a roller coaster to a big degree, especially with God Flowey in the Neutral Ending. I mean, goddamn! Who knew that a flower could provide quite a turn of events like that?! I am going for the Pacifist run next.

I finally bought it and I have to say, it has to easily be my one of my favorite games of the year so far. The characters are all interesting, battles are fun, and the story (so far, I just entered the third area) is good as well.
I wish it was a bit darker, though. People were saying it was pretty dark, but except for a few moments, I don't really feel it that much. There's a bit too much quirkiness for me, but I do still enjoy the humor and characters.
