Ngl, but I personally think Melee has been around too long as is. Not really much else for it to do but take space from sm4sh and get ppl to unnecessarily compare the two. If this can open that up so we can see some melee-like games then I'm all for it cause im just tired of melee and the mindset of its hardcore fans D:

A good game doesn't stop being good just because time has passed, and they don't owe Smash 4 anything. I think the rest of the FGC could stand to learn a lesson from the Smash community about not automatically flocking to garbage (coughSF5cough) just because it's newer, the classics are still there and you can still play them any time.

Thats not entirely what i meant. I'm kinda jealous that Melee is constinatly lauded as this amazing game (it really isnt imo), but that same kindness isnt given to vsav or SF3rd strike. Both are loved and see a lot ofmtournament play but never big screen time anymore. I think Melee does need to die. Its had its time in the spotlight and it should have to move aside after so many years. Im not saying it should be thrown out completely, but mainstage at most events? I think thats pushing it.

Melee was faltering for years. Mang0 managed to revive the scene just a couple years ago.

It's not a solved game, M2K is still working to learn basically all the top-tier characters, so why not? It's great that an old game has enough community clout to be an EVO main event, and it got the most stream viewers of any game last year (not counting SFV on TV). Yeah, sure, I hate when people praise Sakurai for making a game that's "casual and competitive" when the latter was completely unintended on his part, but that's just fans who don't know what they're talking about, they're everywhere.

Also, Rivals of Aether already exists and has started showing up at Smash events, so I wouldn't be hedging my bets on this game anyway...

So it will be out in more or less a year and there is still no gameplay...

    This so much.

I won't name names, but I find it crazy when I see people talk about how incredible classic titles are and yet they don't bother trying to prop up a community for them.

That's the fault of the FGC. Again, traditional fighting game players can learn a thing or two from Melee players.

I guess my opinion is more a minority one, I just think the overally vocal part of the Melee community has ruined it for me. I also get bored of watching what feels like the same matchup and characters over and over again. Maybe I just don't know what I'm talking about, sorry D:

No game and its players should be told to die for someone else's sake. As a Project M player, who watched exactly that happen when people felt we were a threat to Smash 4's growth, fuck everything about that sentiment.

I don't mean it maliciously. I think the game has had a great life, I'm just tired of seeing it. I don't think any game needs to lose its community, I just think sometimes its good for a game to not being the spotlight, especially if its an older game that's been in the spotlight for awhile now.

I'm sorry. I don't know how to word this very well to make my point clear.

It's a good game and I'd rather be seeing it then most other modern titles, but it's true that it has no growth.

You could blame the high execution barrier or the fact that a lot of the game is already explored, but I think the circumstances of its existence, most of all the lack of a modern release with netplay, are more responsible for that.

Mvc2 at least had a modern ps3/xbox360 release with okay-ish netplay to let newcomers and those without a local scene get in on the action.

I mean, the only way I see this succeeding is if people see it as a cheap, easy way to play Melee now that the old hardware isn't being made anymore. However, with the rise of emulation and net play, I just don't see a point in this.

Now watch as this becomes a hit and I have to go hide in some trash can for doubting it.

Dont you know? This entire forum is one giant trashcan, we just collectively don't acknowledge it :P

Seriously though I can see this working, it just needs more of an identity. Melee's gameplay combined with a more balanced roster and unique concept for characters/world could do this game some serious good

I have a few small gripes with rivals, but it honestly feels more like the speed of project M instead of Melee. Its good though. Coulda used an extra character or two to round out the cast though.

All we have so far is a name and that it will Debut after Tekken 7 Top 8 tomorrow at EVO on stream as a Gameplay Trailer.

Here's the teaser we were given right before Melee Top 8

Edit: ok, saw the trailer after the Tekken Geese news....

the game looks like a Poor man's Smash Bros.

Dang, this has a lot in common with Melee, that green girl was pretty much Ganon, that sword girl was pretty much Marth, that Spacie was a Spacie....

The big difference is the complete lack of anything compelling about the artstyle and the unsatisfying-as-hell, hopefully WIP hit *thuds*.

This game is a writeoff for me just from the art alone. So fucking generic. I'll keep an eye out in case the gameplay's actually decent though...

Tears to mine. Mainly of rage. Hopefully fate will grant death to this project as swiftly as it tended to Chainsaw and ...ugh, can't even say it, ....Nonhuman Indignation.

...Maybe that's a bit harsh, even for me. They have time to correct their course. Remember how many people thought Overwatch was gonna be hot garbage after the first round of trailers? We'll see, though this sentiment may just be my intense love of Melee and Project M speaking.

And while a different level of complexity, same for Brawlhalla, which also has its own tourney circuit.

Brawlout appears to be aspiring to be big in the tourney scene, but Steam stats show like 10 ppl play it... Granted, it's still in Early Access, but still.

My biggest gripe was lack of online 4P FFA. And the dev said he probably won't ever add it.

As for WaveDash, I suppose what'd set it apart on the PC scene is if it has grabbing, shields/blocking, and edge grabbing. All things both RoE and Brawlout are lacking, afaik.

(granted, Brawlhalla has those, but I believe its weapons/attack system is what makes it seen as not in the same realm as Smash?)

I hope they actually introduce mechanics not present in other games to actually, you know, incentivise you to choose it over anything else.
Right now it just seems to be Smash without the personality?
Want to be optimistic, but there's already enough smash-likes.

the two mechanics that are in is

sigh... command grabs... and the dust shield. which from the looks of it and how slow your shield recharges... you'll only be able to pull off one successful dust shield per stock.

    Command grabs in what way?
Like, you have to do motions like in traditional 2d fighters, or Ganon side-b style?

Hm, either way I don't really see those 2 mechanics differentiating it much...
I was looking for something more substantial, like how RoA made recovery all about utilising your wall jumps.

    Yeah...

Really not feeling this. Even the new stuff in dust shield will just slow down the game since it makes shield pressure near impossible, as you can activate it before you even get hit.

Raymer's animations are really damn janky. He stands straight up in idle, but bends down everything he does something, and most of the time the transitions look really weird.

If they get success, cheers for them, but I'm personally not seeing this taking off at the rate it's going.

to me this game is like is if Skullgirls wasn't this wacky and creatively designed game and was just Not-Marvel instead
like imagine if Eliza was just Storm with sand or if Big Band was just Sentinel but made out of instruments and that's what this game is to me, just a shallow imitation trying to bank on a popular game that people are moving on/have moved on from

...? I don't understand this sentence. I can't parse what you're saying the level of complexity for Rivals and Brawlhalla are, or the level of complexity you expect for Icons. Brawlhalla and Rivals are already at two very different levels of depth/execution/complexity.

I've played Brawlhalla for all of 6 hours and already feel like I've grasped most of its system, any further work is honing my spacing and then just mindgames. It's fun and the relatively simple fundamentals let you get to the mindgames faster (but it doesn't have a tutorial to teach grav-cancels :/ ), but I already know how to play Skullgirls yet also think I have much more to still learn than I do in Brawlhalla.

I have 13 hours in Rivals and learning how to successfully dodge is very opaque, I don't really understand the benefits of wavedash, I can kinda parry and have basic three-hit combos. So I'm way more interested in watching high-level play.

Sounds like you understood my statement perfectly.

But the point was that Brawlhalla just adds more competition for consumers/players for Icons.

If you were trying to say "Rivals is a different level of complexity" you should have just said "Rivals is a different level of complexity."

Then I think you didn't understand me. The point is that so many people were buying into the hype on good faith alone for an unproven developer who didn't share anything besides buzzwords. When a "successor to Melee" already existed in playable beta and was being praised by the time of the barest news for this. That's not competition. That's stupidity.

And now people are getting wary because they're actually starting to see what it's made of! Ha, this could, no this would cause a huge uproar if things went completely sideways! Oh, I hope any early hype didn't influence any of those investors who gave them 6 million, that they at least did it on the team's good intentions...

Besides, Rivals of Aether has tutorials on DI, wavedashing, wavelanding all of that even if it doesn't teach me how to utilize wavedashing. WaveDash has said they want to make their game "the League of Legends" of Melee (League is famous or infamous for being less complex than Defense of the Ancients and Heroes of Newerth, while still being much more similar to them than Heroes of the Storm), but Rivals already took good steps for that.
