Not sure if this is the correct thread, but if the admin wants to move this elsewhere by all means.

So I got to thinking the other day about Skullgirls, as a person who plays it on a competitive level. What exactly about Skullgirls people love about it? What is the reason for people who have played it to keep playing it, as well as enjoy the lore of Skullgirls. Personally, I left UMVC3 for Skullgirls because all of the above. I love the character designs, I love how Skullgirls plays, and generally I love the community behind it. Skullgirls may not always be the biggest at EVO, but it has a ton of fans backing it. I have gave some serious thought into making some more Skullgirl projects once I am done with college. I am in and out helping with the Skulldate game, and I have a geroge plushie behind me. Its been awhile since a game has me wanting to play the game to get better but also loving the story and the lore that is Skullgirls. I only wish to keep this going for as long as thier are fans, and the community at large about this game.

so my question to everyone is what got you into Skullgirls, and why are you staying?

I first heard about Skullgirls back in 2011 or 2012 when reading a wiki on GGPO. Later found out about Mike being the programmer and then there was the Indiegogo.

The dev said I'm bad so I stick around to show him I'm good. (although I'm not sure my claim of being good is valid.) That and the community is rather nice the first time I showed up to a tournament I had no clue how to play and Wing showed up and helped me out on the first day I was there after tourney so I never forget how kind the community is towards beginners.

Also I'm fairly sure this thread already exists.

I got introduced here by a gif of Peacock. When I first saw the gif I thought that it's from a movie and I got interested but I didn't know where it's from and I got frustrated. Then I saw her on a video and learned that she's from Skullgirls and that's when I got into the fandom.

I stayed because the creators are interactive with the fandom. I also stayed because the animation and story look great. And Beowulf.

I'd wanted to get into fighting games for a long time but found SF4 too hard to pick up. I'd known about SG for a while, but only when I saw the Super Best Friends Play's video a while back did I realize how incredible the art design and gameplay looked. Skullmageddon told me on the Steam forums about how it had a pretty accessible learning curve and a friendly, accepting community, and I picked it up.

    200 hours later, I can't stop and I won't stop.

I've been following Alex Ahad's work since he was on Livejournal. I didn't really expect the Skullgirls project to get anywhere though, so for a while it was off of my radar. Years later, I came across some of Alex's newer stuff on DA, along with a call for animators to help him with the updated Filia graphics. In the post, he had that initial grayscale frame of Filia's idle, and I thought, "Pfft, can this guy really pull off a game that looks THAT good?"

I forgot how much time it took after that, but one day I just happened upon a video of Mike Z at a convention with the early Filia demo. Seeing the game in motion was jawdropping for me, and it was even better to hear Mike share actual coherent gameplay ideas behind it. It looked like the real deal!

So since then, I've just gobbled up whatever development news I could find about the game. It's still rare to find a product this polished coming from such a passionate development team, so it's just been fun to watch the story unfold.

And of course, the game itself actually plays well too! For my fighting game fix, I'll probably be switching off between SG and 3S for a long time.

I was watching X-Play (yes, on tv) on G4 (yes, the channel) and there were showing gameplay. I noticed Peacock and how awesome she was. I never saw a fighting game where the character would SHOOT, TELEPORT, AND THROW BOMBS! She was awesome! I had to play just for how fun she seemed.

I played the demo on XBLA, thought it was really fun, then sadly, it was removed from XBLA before I could buy it. So, I watched tournaments from Evo, and salty, and just really interested in the gameplay, character, but most importantly, the fights. Just how fast pace, and not over the top it was. It was a mix of SF and MVC3.

Then bam, the game returned to XBLA, redownloaded the demo and decided to main Cerebella. Never actually played Peacock to high levels.

For basically my entire life, I hated fighting games (except smash). I learned about this game when it was early access on steam. I randomly decided to buy it for some reason in February 2014 (I don't even know why I remember the month I bought it) Every time I played a fighter before this one was a friend showing it to me and then going on to destroy me, that's probably why I hated fighters. Honestly, I thought this was going to be one of those games I would play for a little and then never touch again. I was wrong. I had $20 in my steam account and the only DLC character at the time was Squigly. Her free time was over so I bought her and the game. When I bought it I thought "Well, I bought the DLC character so might as well play as her." I played as Squigly first and learned to play an actual fighting game. Why I played it so long is a mystery to me. I've been playing it for almost a year now and I still can't answer that question. Even though I haven't played the game as much recently it's still one of my favorite games of all time. It's hard for me to get back into it because I get very rusty and I haven't been as cheeky as I used to be. :(

My friend told me about before vanilla dropped. I was heavy in Umvc3, but he bought it for me when it dropped on the xbox marketplace and it was wrap ever since. Went from marvel to SG a couple of time but nowadays my marvel is collecting dust and I play this shit like everyday. It's fun, salt or not. The community is also pretty cool. What keeps me staying, is simply love for the game and community, the fact that i stopped playing any other fighter so if i go back to the other fighters i'll be straight trash, and the fact that I actually want to place top 8 during a major.

Ever since I got into the FGC by watching high level SF4 and playing BB Continuum Shift, I've always loved playing new fighting games. I got into newer games and went back to the classics. So basically, if it was announced, I was probably gonna be playing it eventually. It's the same today, really. I don't have enough fingers to count how many of these games I play, but I've put them all on the backburner and am focusing on getting better in SG now that I've come out of online play retirement. SG got my attention, and I followed it for a while, bought it in vanilla and didn't play much after it. I didn't really get into it until Squigly was announced, but since then, it's quickly become one of my favourite fighting games of all time, up there with Vampire Saviour and the classic KoF games, and has some of my all time favourite characters(Painwheel, Peacock, Fortune <3). The game feels great, I love the characters, the animation is beautiful, the lore, the music. I just love the game to death.

Also, it's nice having good netcode after dealing with SF4's vomit inducing lag for so many years.

A friend of mine on Steam and Tumblr got me interested into this game and he even gifted me the base game so I could get the DLC myself, and this game is possibly the only fighting game that I might get serious about. The game can be pretty tough and, with the exception of the Marie fights, I really enjoy a good challenge in a game, be it against a CPU or another human player.

I read an article before the game came out. I forget where I saw it, some random gaming magazine. It said the game had sweet art deco design and jazz music. The lead designer was a guy with some chops on both the player and maker side of gaming. It looked worth a try, especially as a $15 game.

I've stuck with it because i've found some characters that click for me. I'm never gonna keep playing a game, regardless of how good it is, if I dont' find characters I enjoy playing. It helps that the fellas I play with are good dudes too.

-Heard it was an indie 2-D fighter (when it released) w/good art/animation made outside of Japan, which captured my interest.
-Didn't get it til it was free on PS+ because of Parasoul's inverted cross (wasn't sure if the devs had a thing against Christianity).

When a friend first showed me a clip of the early Fillia and Cerebella only build, I thought it was just another meh doujin (actually thought it was japanese at first lol) anime fighter that was being released a ton at the time (Aquapazza, Phantom Breaker). Besides Mvc3 was coming out and I was too hyped to care.

Than mvc3 got really boring for me so I went back to mvc2. Than I found out that Mike Z was actually the one behind this Skullgirls project, and I instantly became interested.

I heard that it was immaculately animated, was programmed by some kinda serious fighting game dude, and I had the $15 indie game fever. Snapped it up on day one from XBLA. Played off and on (also buying it from PSN) until the PC release, where I started taking it more seriously. I stay because it's the best fighting game. It's well-balanced, it's visually dynamic, and it's maintained by obsessive-compulsives who work for peanuts but keep adding new stuff anyway.

Before Skullgirls, I wasn't even 100% sure I actually liked fighting games. I don't know the numbers, but I have to imagine Skullgirls is in the top 5 of games I've spent the most time on.
