Report What's Up With Fukua: A Q&A With Mike Z

New update for retail/ Beta PC version...so Fukua gonna stay just into the Beta? or the Text Adventure for the Retail is some kind of input code for her (?)

She is not an input code.
She will never become an input code.
April Fools is over so Steam SGEncore has returned to the console cast.
Since Fukua is planned to be included with Eliza, she is currently Endless Beta only. She is still to the right of Big Band, her select art has been removed temporarily. She is still getting tweaks as Mike sees fits.

She needs some design refinements at least for her to stand out from Filia. What is the thing she throws out in her fireball? Is that an egg or something?

she's a 3-day made clone with only reused assets... she shouldn't stand out so much. kinda beats the idea. If she had like... 8 months of development with lab zero generating hype about it and keeping some stupid "mystery air" about her, THEN she should stand out, be unique and not be a palette swap clone at all...

I have to make a better version of that Mike Z chibi I did last year (?)
I'm still flattered you even used it @Night Phyre

i vote for it.

i double vote for it!

keep the chibis coming!

I'm pretty sure Mike removed the select art intentionally and permanently as to give her an old-school secret character feel.

Also can we get double-jump cancels on her air-normals pretty plz Mike?

Mike you mentioned in another thread that you were ok with the inclusion of Fukua because you felt you would not have the chance to work on this game again after the current Indiegogo DLC batch; Whats keeping L0 from starting another crowdfunding for more characters? I know its not because you care what people would say about it because you clearly said that you dont care and I bet that if L0 was to ask for money for more characters, the Community would gladly donate more because they love the game so much and Fukua could potentially become a "Real" character while keeping the similar zoner/grappler play style she currently has.

So whats going on?

If money really is the problem, i believe we could understand if they ask for say 200k for a fully fledged character unlike the previous 150k

Skullgirls isn't in as bad a situation as it was when the Indiegogo occurred. L0 might be seen as greedy if they try again.

Then let L0 make a Poll asking the IGG backers if they would be interested in donating again after theyre done with the current characters.

Would that be seen as Greed if the backers really want more?

I'd assume it'd be safer to say that most focus is going towards the dlc igg characters first and maybe along the way small tweaks can be done to her then during when it works for them or when one new characters done she can either be released with said character or maybe after robo fortune for consoles I'd assume.

Of course I could be wrong some info's been confusing me from different people so if anyone has better clarity it'd be appreciated ^^;

*edit* apparently in the Eliza build ^^;

Also if the backers or more people wanna donate and help the games cause I don't see that in any way being greedy if the community "wants" to donate.

The problem wouldn't be with getting backers from the first go around to sign on. It would be trying to get new people to back it. People might look into recent Skullgirls news and get ticked over the fact that (if it happened right now) L0 would be asking for even more money despite not having finished delivering on their promises from the first crowdfunding effort. It would be marketing suicide to try another IGG right now.

Well I assume most people would think for fukua's sake and future content sake that all the stuff from the last IGG should be finished first before actually thinking about starting a new one....I do however think after this IGG people would still be willing to keep Skullgirls growing.

Getting off topic, but reason why is

1. It would be an image issue because they had the sympathy factor going for them last time with the following "we want to finish Squigly + maybe more but we were laid off for x reason..", but if they try again now that sympathy could quickly be changed into perceived greed with "Kay since it worked last time we will ask again now since we need more money!".

2. They are being payed barely enough to live while following the current IGG plan/budget so they would have to raise the bar higher for another one. 150k for Squigly only happened because she was partially done so for a brand new character with better wages would be asking more then 200-300k (guesstimate) a pop.

3. It was mentioned that setting up an IGG of that scale, keeping it running for roughly a month answering questions/interviews, making deals(with Mane6), getting the VA cast involved, setting up the numerous vital tier prizes, promoting, etc etc etc is an extremely taxing task for a small team like L0. Near the end of the campaign L0 was messages by an IGG person asking if they want an extension so they can surpass a million (so they can have a game to reach that plateau for publicity reasons) and L0 declined.

Reason was again the image thing and two it was a taxing endeavor and just want it to end it already. Not to mention that even after its over they still have to deal with the aftermath like shipping the thousands of physical tier prizes and they are still not done with that despite a year passing because of the amount of work involved. Yeah I doubt they are eager to launch another IGG campaign out of sheer passion again and would prefer some angel entrepreneur capitalist to invest in them instead. Which naturally isn't likely to happen if your familiar with the political situation associated to SG.

4. They might just want to move on to different projects besides Skullgirls. They don't even own the IP anymore so they don't see a nickel of return directly from sales outside of maybe physical merchandise sales.

Let's get back to the matter associated to Fukua or otherwise go to a different thread to pursue this topic further.

I hope so. I know it's a trivial thing but I personally find it a lot easier to accept her in those terms, so to speak.

If money really is the problem, i believe we could understand if they ask for say 200k for a fully fledged character unlike the previous 150k
They were already reluctant to make the first IGG drive and I'm fairly certain they are adamant about never doing it again.
If people want to get their philanthropy on and donate out of their own accord, I don't see Lab Zero rejecting it but I don't think they'd pull the IGG card again as, I imagine, they want to avoid the image of being the beggar holding the hat. Metaphorically speaking.
And as shoryusatsu999 pointed out, asking for money without having delivered what the first campaign funded wouldn't sit well with the general public.

They simply don't want to do another IGG. They would rather get hired to make another game, IIRC, and make funds that way.

I can not and do not speak for L0 or anyone else involved in SG. My statement may be incorrect.

This isn't a question but she totally needs some palettes based off old stupidly poorly made MUGEN recolor characters like Ghetto Warmachine or Green Latern Lucario.
Did you just say Ghetto Warmachine was poorly made?
You tryna make enemies? haaanh?

Loading art = character portrait art and Mike said he get her her own even if he has to draw it. No art is temporary.

Fake edit: other thread says Mike in IRC said its invisible because secret character feel. Not a fan but not my call.

Hmm. I think one of us is misunderstanding the other's post. What I mean is that Fukua's select square has been removed so that you can't see that there is a character there until you actually move the cursor on top of it. Maybe Mike wants to change the art for her portrait but I'm pretty sure that she will stay as a "hidden" character.

In the long run? Not likely, considering Fukua's addition to the roster would be an aesthetic bonus since her inclusion ensures that the roster will be symmetrical once the rest of the DLC is out.

Loading screen = black and white art with "LOADING". She'd have that.
Character select = probably gonna be a blank square forever, might get moved. If nothing else, would be in the middle on a row so that the whole thing is "even" and she isn't really all that hidden.

Have you thought about leaving it as a blank square but having the picture come up when you hover over it? Don't know if that is even possible.

I rather liked her initial placement location and that she was visible.

I like her being hidden. Easy to find, no secret code or anything. However a tribute to past secret clones, as well as squashing all those outsiders who would criticize her clone design if she were on the normal select screen like everyone else.

No one criticizes Shadow Lady, shadow charlie, etc. A lot of criticism for Decapre, Juni/Juli, E. Ryu/Oni etc.

I'd prefer aesthetic symmetry over hidden slots, unless the roster was "even" to begin with, like X-Men vs Street Fighter. Akuma was a hidden selectable character, but the rest of the roster was "even" without him. In this case, Fukua would make the roster "even", so hiding her wouldn't make much sense. If anything, she could be on the same row, opposite corner of Robo-Fortune, to kinda group the clones together.

Like this:

Squigly | Beowulf | Eliza
Fortune | Peacock | Painwheel
Filia | Random Select | Cerebella
Valentine | Parasoul | Double
Robo-Fortune | Big Band | Fukua

As an added bonus, you'd have the male characters aligned in the same column, as well as having both "Meatbag" and Robo Fortune in the same column as well.

What about this? If it is in the middle of a row, the select screen wouldn't look awkward plus she keeps the hidden character status.

One other idea that would keep the character select screen all filled in plus symmetrical is this. I posted this in Eliza thread.

"For character select screen...I think

Squiggly Big Band Eliza (Musical trio, 2 singers on either side of the band (instruments))
Valentine Peacock Double(Villains?)
Painwheel Beowulf Cerebella (Grapplers)
Filia Parasoul Fortune(Heroes?)

Fukua would be hidden selectable to the left of Filia. Robo Fortune would be hidden selectable to the right of Fortune. Don't know where random would go."

Random could be done through some input.

Thanks for the new toy to mess with, I really like her palettes.

Making "Random" an input would be the same as making Fukua a code character, as far as I can tell. Also why redo the select UI just to make clone characters hidden? I'd much rather go with either my idea, or Mike putting her at bottom center so she keeps her hidden status while still having an even roster.

Cause they're clones? One of the biggest arguments for those who voted 'No' to Fukua, was that she doesn't match up in quality to the rest of the cast, and being visible on the select screen would make LZ look lazy. As if they were padding out the small cast with clones. Hidden character=nice bonus. Visible character=lazy clone.

Fukua doesn't even have a different portrait art, having her visible looks bad. It will turn off new players, and let critics tee off.

Mike's idea works well and would probably be easiest to implement. My idea was taking into consideration Robo Fortune, though I'm not sure how much of a clone she will be.
