I have been following their streams for the least 3 months. I like the concept, and it stays interresting. Just wish i would understand anything. Maybe this could be something?
This looks pretty coooooooooooooooooooooool I agree that I wish I could understand any of it
I would love to have the division playoff thing happened and here is my proposal for what we could do.
I like these ideas. I actually hadn't considered making it a team thing, which like I got the idea from team sports so it probably should have at least occurred to me. This could be p cool tho. I agree with you that if one team has Sonic and Sage they would probably just shit all over everyone and that would be a real problem wrt watchability. Not sure how to get around that.
alright bitch this is how its gonna go down feel me first we mod blaise alright then the illuminati picks their finest warriors to face off winner is the best loser dies irl die in the game die in real life feel me each section of the illumintitty across the world shall fight who shall reign supreme you may wonder find out this sunday night as john cena defends his world title at the WWE suuuuppperrrslamm (pay-per-view) the illuminbugahtii shall control?
Yeah same

We get around it by having all other regions battle it out to win a round robin to get to PLAY team EC. Be way more hype that way.

I like the idea of having a league with teams. I always thought it would be kinda cool to have a Skullgirls podcast sort of thing but idk if there's enough to talk about to make a weekly sort of thing out of that. I can dream though...
If you do the league thing let's make the team size 6v6 and add airshots

From what I could see (can't read moon) it looks like a danisen or ranking system used in other fighters.

  • In that kind of system, you register with a character (or team in our case; 1-3 characters) and start with the lowest rank (1st dan, novice, w/e you want to call it).
  • You face people in the same or similar rank and gain or lose 1 point per match.
  • Once you reach a certain threshold, say +/-3 (could also vary; e.g. +7/-3), you rank up or down.
  • Depending on the system, once you reach a certain rank you can't go below it, but you also can only fight people at the same or higher rank to level.
  • The ranking requirement may also get stricter the higher you go (rank 1-3 = +/-3; 4-6 = +5/-3; 7-9 = +7/-3).
  • You may also allow people to re-register with different teams, leveling those up as well.
That's my limited understanding anyway.

Thank you a lot man for taking the time to translate. I wanna see this. Can we make this?
Also can we have this kind of stuff directly implemented into the next Skullgirls 2 online ranking system should it ever come to fruition @Mike_Z

O wow can't believe I missed that link.

I love running Danisen, i'd be more than down to do something like that as well. I could run the PS3 one and someone could work and stream the PC one.

First stage
Two Stage
Three Stage
Four Stage
Five Stage
Six Stage
Seven Stage
Eight Stage
Kudan
Judan
Strong Man
Veteran
Champion
Coach
Chisho
Tosho
KenKiyoshi
TakeKiyoshi

This is how it works in the Japan 3s scene First Stage going all the way down but we could definitely condense it

I never heard of this "Danisen" thing before you guys mentioned it. Nice to know what this is based on. Thanks guys! But yeah i really find this concept super interresting.

Sorry, long post incoming, and kind of unrelated to most recent posts.

You guys have some great ideas here, I'm not much in this community but I thought I could offer my input as to what could make this stream or one like it the best it could possibly be, and the most entertaining and useful to all members of the SG community, competitive, beginner, casual, and otherwise.
I think there is there is an empty gap with room for a big, dedicated Skullgirls stream, to be streamed and upheld probably by many people if it needs to be. I have no idea if what Mcpeanuts has planned is that stream, or if that stream will come soon, or if we'll see it at all, but there's a number of valuable ways in which this stream or a big stream like it could provide to the community, which I've been thinking about. Some of these thoughts are probably already on people's minds, I just want to get them out here.

1. To showcase competitive Skullgirls play, outside of big tourneys since there are so few. I am relatively new to the game, I started playing last year, and I can think of many competitive players who I have never seen play a match. This isn't a problem with a more mainstream game because a lot more big tournaments for those happen all the time. A big Skullgirls stream similar to WYL shows people what high-level skullgirls play looks like, and can show off many of the top players' skills, strategies and playstyles, not to mention just showing of some great damn matches.

2. To help educate players about the game. And I'm not talking about a tutorial/educational type stream, streams like Newbie Night and @dapurplesharpie's stream are suitable places for beginners and intermediate players to play and learn together. All I mean is that while showing off competitive play, the stream keeps a constant attitude of helping the viewer to understand. I see Street Fighter commentators do this all the time. During or in between matches, they will constantly drop tips and facts about game systems and tech when they see something in a match that needs explanation. That's just an idea, what I'm saying is if a big Skullgirls stream got started, I would want to see it be a place for everybody and have just as much value for new players as for pros.

3. To provide a sense of stability. Currently, Skullgirls streams trickle through the internet, tying some parts of the community together, gathering viewers here and there, but overall without rhyme or reason. Skullgirls should have some kind of a big stream which can be a regular, persistant event, and always have form and organization to it. I guess the best example is Team Spooky (although Spooky's budget is much higher than a SG strem would ever be), people not only entertaining to watch but very good at what they do. It should look and feel professional, be welcoming and accessible, and be strong in both content in presentation. I have no idea if this glorious master stream is possible, I'm speaking very idealistically here, but I think this kind of a stream would really put an impression on the rest of the FGC.

These are just my thoughts. I am not establishing rules, or demanding a stream like this from Mcpeanuts or anybody else, I simply wanted to offer some thoughts I've had since watching a WYL stream once.

TL;DR Skullgirls needs a Team Spooky.

@noaa and @Mwisk do just that with commentary in our weekly tournaments, since we have so many people that are relatively new to the game or fgs in general they'll usually explain and give tips, even directed to the people playing at the time. Also noa is always concerned about stream quality and does a great job maintaining and improving it.

noa is like the best <3

I will take your word for it, since the only word I know is "farofa"

Okay so I am no longer at work, so I can elaborate a bit. Sorry in advance if my points are all over the place, but this is a creative process, no?

I think regional division based stuff would be for the best. It allows for anyone that wants to participate to be able to, and be able to play others around the same skill level (with less lag) Things included should be

-S, A, and B leagues are what I would look at mainly, with S being the strongest players (subject to change)
-Have it region based (NE, MW, WC, Canada, Central America, South America, Europe, and Asia are all ideas. Others can refine this)
-Have seasons, where you rank rank up/down based on performance (Up to A, down to B, etc)

At the end of the season you can hold events with things like the top players from each region's leagues (B vs B, A vs A etc) fighting each other, or other stuff idk. If you do division based things like this, it will be way more flexible since (if it's popular enough) there should be enough matches to stream, and when people aren't available you can have them play their matches off stream at another time to continue the season. For people outside of NA, we can give responsible people the stream key so they can stream their region's matches when it is better for them. If you can't tell, I also think there should be a centralized account on twitch for streamed matches.

I also really like the way this Danisen thing sounds, but I don't like that there's no ranking down. At the end of the day, I really just want something that everyone can play in if they WANT to, that has different shades of competitiveness, and is a regular thing (weekly), allowing for big streamed events at the end of a season (monthly/quarterly)

@WarpedEcho Don't you get down ranked in Danisen if you points go below 0 in a rank your already in?
Like lets say for instance a Two Stage player with +9 points goes against Three Stage player with 0 points and wins, won't he be demoted to Two Stage at that point?

Edit: Oh wait so -points and +points are consistent in each rank.
Lets say Three Stage is +9 -4.
Does this mean you need 9 wins to rank up but 4 loses will rank you down?

@WarpedEcho @gluemchen

You go up and down with points with each win and loss. The +/- number you have is calculated by your wins minus your losses.

So in gluemchen's example, if you were Three Stage (+9 -4) and had a score of -2, you'll need 11 wins to rank up and 2 loses to rank down from that position.

If you never reached either threshold, you could have a W/L of 23/25 or whatever and still be -2 of the Three Stage.

Oh ok. I thought - and + points were treated seperatly.
This is how i thought it worked. Three Stage (+9 -4) lets say i had won 8 but lost 3(+8 -3) losing the next match would rank me down. Yeah.... that would be kinda too ruthless... maybe... lol.
Good to know. Thanks @Luweewu

Whoops it was explained nvm.

Bottom line, I'm figuring it out a little bit more and getting answers to some questions by some 3s friends of mine. I plan on organizing a danisen league for PSN fairly soon.

Anyone that would like to run for PC may do so as well.

I really want the regional 5v5 league thing to happen as well. That would be dope but this would require someone to host/run it on PC, I can get the ground work going though.

Alright started the Danisen leagues. The only problem is, its in the sense a "neverending" tournament you just do it on your own time so its not really optimal in terms of streaming...

SO YEAH THAT REGIONAL 5v5 thing could happen that'd be cool someone do it or I can.

I am all about having a bellaball or fugazi tourney. We need to diversify our minigames portfolio. Typing of the Skullgirls 2v2 would be great but that doesn't work online so rip I guess.

I'd like more streams dedicated to sharing information and helping people improve, but even when I did it I had trouble figuring out the best methods of doing so.

Did somebody say... MINIGAMES?

But yeah, for those of you unaware, I run a weekly event called Skullgirls Slapfest (which streams bi-weekly). The idea is to get beginner to intermediate-level players to play together in lobbies with voice chat, as an alternative to getting bodied in quickmatch and having no idea what they're doing wrong. The group alternates between casual play and minigames/tutorials/etc. If anyone has ideas for new-player-oriented stuff, I'd love to hear them.

This was basically my thought. As someone who always wanted to compete in something like WYL, it was extremely intimidating if you weren't already really good.
I also want to second the regional thingy people are talking about, because I'm not very good and my connection beyond the West Coast is garbage, so at the very least I'd have regular matches with some of this coast's best players instead of playing randoms online.

I'm probably gonna let this thread rock until at least the 25th, but given that it seems to be a two horse race right now between kumites and the division based league thing, people with strong objections to either of those formats might wanna say something now. Cause like as it stands right now I'm probably gonna be doing one of those two.

I think kenin mentioned earlier that we don't need a regular stream for kumites since people seem to do them on their own. Sort of true, but we definitely don't have kumites as a regular biweekly (or maybe triweekly, to use IsaVulpes's suggestion) thing. There seems to be a demand for them more often than they're currently happening.

Another thing I was thinking if it ends up being kumites: one of my own objections was that it might be hard to get someone to do a kumite every X amount of time. One idea I had was the challenger who has the best record against the uh, against the guy doing the kumite (man is there really not a single word that encapsulates that concept? w/e) is the person in the kumite for next time. I wouldn't obligate anyone to do that since it's such a big commitment in terms of time and salt, but that person would be the first person I asked, you know. The other problem is what if we get in a loop where every other week it's either SonicFox or Dekillsage and well I don't have as good a solution for that.

As far as the division thing goes, my concern there is can I get enough people, especially if we did some sort of team based format (which I would like to, it's cool and distinguishes it from other online events). I guess what I'm worried about is that Skullbats and now kenin's Danisen thing scratches that itch for a lot of people. I know there's some interest in watching a stream like this, but how many people would want to participate?

I think near the end of last year it felt like once a month was what we had for a pace (between I think Taluda/Yours/Negus's kumites), and I think that was nice. Kumites would be rarer but since they are more effort involved it gives it good time to rest for a while, so I think once a month is okay.

To me, I don't really care about the particular level of play in the kumite but I just enjoy the seeing the gimmick itself. Like, when's @"Sir" BALK MaNC kumite AKA Jorge's day out? Or like, a lot of people lately have been discussing Eliza, when's an Eliza Kumite like the Red Savarin/Guitalex Fukua kumite's before? I'd be more interested in seeing concepts played out like that than some rotation of player kumite's.

I remember that old stream that was the random Team vs Team that was just a weird mashed collection of players on both sides, and it was pretty entertaining despite seemingly having not much identity with it. I'm sure you could bring up something as a test and plenty of players would join.

So now that we have the danisen league can you use the rankings to make kumites? Like, "Man this guy is 7th dan but now let's put it to the test" or something.

Maybe when people start hitting higher ranks.

Edit: Also if possible could these ideas be put in a rotation? That way it doesn't get stale too fast I think the fact that WYL ran for so long and so frequently that it died faster than it should've. (Unless someone wrote this already I dunno reading forums is a lot of work.)

What if you did a little bit everything? Maybe a Kumite one time then the league for awhile? Then a team thing? Rotation which keeps it a bit more fresh, I suppose. Or maybe one person does a stream for each? I just seems like all these ideas can be used.

That's not a bad idea... I could do one of these ideas then when that's getting a bit stale I can do one of the others. I'd like to do both the league and the kumites if only because they both have some interest, but doing both at once would be spreading myself pretty thin.

What if matches in the danisen league for higher promotions were streamed? Kinda like some karate schools have family members watch their belt promotion tests. Would make being a higher ranking a little more high profile.
