Ms. Fortune Cerebella
I finally settled on Fortune/Filia as my initial team, so I can finally start getting my feet wet. To do: 1) Reduce the frequency of input mistakes 2) Get some simple combos more or less down 3) Experiment with assists and work them in 4) Figure out safe ways to switch characters.

Entry 1
I took some Fortune combos out of stickies to start practicing; Filia I'm trying to work out one or two of my own, since the ones I found require better air control than I can manage right now.

Filia: LP, LP → LK → MP → cMK → cHP → qcb K+K → assist (Fiber Upper) → cMP → jHP
For some reason it does more damage if I skip the first string of basics and start with the Gregor Samson. Thought the combo might be dropping, but that's not it; doesn't seem to be partially missing with Gregor either. I don't understand.

Filia (opponent cornered): MP → cMK → assist (Fiber Upper, during cMK) → HP (connecting simultaneously) → jMP → jHP
Maybe Fenrir Drive or another assist after jMP?

In addition to DHC, nom provides an opening to switch characters. Grabs and Filia's HP look like they might as well, but I didn't have a sparring partner tonight. The launch from Gregor Samson is almost certainly long enough. Fortune's launch looks dangerous.

I've assigned P+P to one of my macro buttons. This should make dashing a lot easier, but I feel like I'm picking up a bad habit. Would make adding a third character more difficult.

Finally finished the last three tutorials. Woo, achievement.

Did some more training last night. Found out through chat that my combo was dealing less damage because combos suffer from diminishing returns. The person who explained this also urged me not to cut the jabs because they're better for landing the first hit then MP. LKs do more than LPs, so maybe start with those. I also figured out that I need to time my cMP on the wall bounce instead of just mashing, otherwise Fiber Upper misses. I think I can squeeze a bit more damage out of that section, even if it's just another loose hit or two.

Getting better at the Fortune combo, and I've set the dummy to block after first hit while I'm practicing both. My timing on MK → HP → qcf HP is the problem spot.

A friend unexpectedly dropped by the other night so I was able to test the safety of grabs and Filia's HP. He wasn't able to punish the swap after either. Forgot to try the Fortune launchers.

Playing in an online beginner tournament tonight, hopefully I can at least manage a respectable showing.

Got rolled in the tournament. I hit arcade mode for awhile after that to get more field practice. I switched from my old PS2 controller to a newer 360 controller about half way through and my problem with diagonals not registering went away; I guess the PS2 pad is just too worn out for fighters.

My Filia play is miles ahead of my Fortune play. I can manage a short ground combo into either hairball → slide or Gregor Samson, while with Fortune I struggle to string two hits together. Head on/Head off really messes with the timing of MP → MK, which is in both of the combos I've been trying to master. I'll do some more work on her before I cut her, but I'm also looking into other characters for my starting lineup. Fortune and Filia's playstyles also feel similar enough to be a bit redundant.

I did some experimenting with Bella, who seems really good on paper, but I'm finding her hard to combo with as well. I gather that she's good against my worst matchup (Big Band) and has one of the better assists in the game (Bellacopter), but the jury is very much out. Incidentally I could keep the Madoka pallette theme with her.

Fukua is definitely out. I tried to finish up all the stories last night and kept dropping combos/wasting meters trying to use hairball/Gregor Samson because of muscle memory.

I'll give Val another look and maybe Double. Big Band's trumpet play looks fun, but he may be too drastically different than what I'm used to for a main.

More training mode with Cere, followed by some arcade with Cere/Filia and Filia/Fortune. Felt like I was just button mashing, even with Filia. Head off seemed pretty effective against Big Band, but that may not hold true against human opponents. Assisting Fortune with Hairball was fun, but got Filia hit a few times. Need to stop using jMK as a lead in with both Fortune and Filia; it's terrible for that.

Unlocked Happy Birthday with a Gregor Samson.
