As far as what they have in common, well, I like playing rushdown, preferably with decent speed and mixup. The last few years, I've shifted toward using females, usually those with some sort of tomboy or alt angle to them (except Tekken, where being normal is the alternative). I usually start with a character's design and then see if the gameplay feel works for me. I stay pretty loyal until that character changes or a new one catches my attention.

On average, I appear to lean towards rushdown, but I randomly main zoners and grapplers in a handful of games. I think Project M is a good example of how varied my mains tend to be, as I am almost equally skilled with a shoto, a slow hard hitter, and a melee-attack-based zoner with a teleport.

What exactly constitutes a "main" anyway?

As far as I care, a main is just any character you play/want to play the most. I'm terrible at DOA5; I haven't put much time in it. But, I can tell you whenever I do, I'll pick Mila.

The point of this is two fold. First, to see what other FG's the people here got into. Second, to get them to think about the trends and tendencies in their character selection.

I played a lot of fighting games but sadly didn't learn much from it besides muscle memory with the motions and whatnot. I'm much better at SG than I've ever been at any other game and that still isn't saying much.
As for tendencies, well, I always went for what I thought looked cooler or was more fun so picks are all over the place. However, when it comes to move sets, I favor characters with good pokes/footsies and the more deliberate types that hit harder. In fact, my original intention in SG was to run Val/Bella but me and rushdown is just not meant to be.
And yeah, I loved picking cheap ass boss characters. :P

Oh that's easy for me, I like to pick female or weird characters and by weird I mean I'm the type of guy to pick Arakune in Blazblue. I hate to pick people based on teirs like how MvC3 tournaments are dominated by like 4 people (don't quote me on this just making an example) based on specific set of skills they have over say Rocket Raccoon (who I love) I also tend to pick kawaii over sexy females.

Without rambling the better question is do people psychologically pick characters based on preferences in their own lives or past, I do
I pick female characters 1.Because coming up as a young boy in the 90's,games were filled with tons of males and cartoons didn't have to many female protagonists 2.My first friend was this young girl who helped shaped the person I became and 3. Females heavily influenced my life both good and bad. Shuma was the first character I ever used in any fighting game that's why I like weird characters. I might just write an article or post later on the psychology of our fighting game choices.

The only games I took any kind of seriously were Tekken 2/3, Soul Calibur II, and Skullgirls. So the other characters are generally who I played the most and likely would have main'd had I put anything more than casual time in. There are also huge gaps. I became more of a PC gamer and stopped playing FG entirely, so my list is likely smaller than Elky's (Jesus Christ man!).

So I don't think I have much of a type as far as rushdown/zone/etc. I generally go right for an aesthetic and try to make it work. That aesthetic is often monster/evil/undead though obviously there are huge exceptions. I am probably more attracted to stance characters (true stance characters like Lei/Ivy/Zafina, not Squig style stance characters). I also gravitate toward whatever is considered low tier. My strongest characters were probably Anna and Xiaoyu, but I didn't like their synergy too much so didn't often play them as a team. I never figured out a way for them to get a lot out of eachother's tagout moves.

Marvel 2: Jill/Morrigan/Doom. Sent and Cable sometimes swapped in.

As for why i pick characters... Usually I just watch high-level match videos and see a move/combo/setup, something that looks cool and I'll go try it out. I'll usually mess around with lots of characters in a game before settling on a main.
