Does anyone know of any good shows/movies/comics/games that focus on portraying zombie characters in a more sympathetic/"human" light (particularly female ones)?

I personally don't know of much, except for an anime/manga called Sankarea where a teenage boy falls in love with a girl he resurrected. I'm not typically an anime fan, but I watched and enjoyed it! Apparently, there's also an anime called Corpse Princess about a zombie girl who hunts down murderers or something, but I haven't seen that one yet. Will probably be changing that soon.

Also, I recently stumbled upon this TV trailer:

Usually not into shows like this, but I gotta admit, I'm intrigued!

There's also Warm Bodies, where there are zombies, and they learn to be human again. It's a pretty good movie.

C-corpse bride
Oh yeah, I forgot that one! I've heard good things about it, but I'm ashamed to say I've not seen it yet.

Huh, I didn't know that they made a TV adaptation of iZombie. The comic is pretty good

You can never go wrong with that. It might be stretch, but Nightmare Before Christmas might count XD

Maybe...

Sallys more of a frankenstein than a Zombie. But you can also argue that Frankenstein is a zombie

I said ti was stretch, didn't I? But yeah, you could argue that. I won't, because I don't really care, but I thought it was worth throwing out there.

Hsien-Ko is a Jiangshi, which is a vampire/zombie thing...Though in-universe I beleive she's still considered human? Iunno. Darkstalkers is weird...

I'm quickly running out of ideas XD Mostly just good side characters are left off the top of my head...Didn't think the whole sympathetic zombie thing was so rare...

Thought this would be interesting to put out there: there's apparently a doll series that takes Disney public domain Princesses and reimagines them as zombies (through some kind of magic curse or whatever). It even has a webtoon!

Doesn't seem like something that would interest me, but I'll say it is a clever idea. I wonder if there are more "zombified" versions of established properties out there.

There is a...errm...interesting webcomic by the name of Grim Tales which has a fairly cute zombie girl character design.

Despite the occasionally semi-charming art, I can't recommend it, at all.

MAYBE worth a read for the "so bad its good" value. I Wish that Hello Kitty X Spawn cross over actually existed though.

For a real recommendation, Darkstalkers for Hsien-Ko and Midnight Bliss Zabel.

Yeah, the Grimm comic is basically taking a ton of old Cartoon Network shoes and shoving them togethor with great art, but a pretty poor storyline. My friend is a big fan of it...but I never found it too appealing.
EDIT: It also has some nick series and an anime here and there. Essentially it's a hodge podge of random shows from the guy's childhood mashed togethor. It's ok, but not up to quality elsewhere.

Might I suggest Shantae and the Pirate's Curse? The zombie girl isn't the main focus or anything, but she gets pretty good screen time and development over the course of the game (has the best subplot of the game, in my opinion). The game itself is also really good, so there's that too.

Oh yeah, Rotty Tops is great in all the Shantae games! In fact, play the games anyways! They're great platformers in general!

Now that I've said that...I'm surprised Wayforward hasn't teamed up with Skullgirls for anything, given their love of awesome female protags!

Oh yeah, that reminds me of a pretty funny zombie girl manga I read a little while back called Living Dead (interestingly enough, the zombie girl in this can also remove her head)
http://www.mangareader.net/living-dead

Seeing all this has got me wondering, though: why are all "friendly zombie" characters required to have stitches somewhere on their body, no matter how little sense it makes to have them? Is this really required to show that the character in question is a zombie, and not just someone with pale skin and missing limbs? Even characters who get turned into zombies by magic seem to have them! (Example, that zombie princess vid)

I've said before that Squigly's design predates her backstory, and I believe Alex just added the stitches to her lips due to this perplexing "all zombies MUST have stitches" rule. Since most of her body is already covered up, her face was the only place left to put them, but that created problems of why they're there, how she talks, etc. The excuses justifications Alex had come up with are how we got the backstory we're left with today... all thanks to a tired trope.

I think it's about time to put this "zombies with stitches" trend to rest (and hope it doesn't revive).

Strange, I had always thought that stitches are associated with Frankenstein's monster types and not zombies.

Character design is a tricky process, where you have to telegraph to the audience what the character is about. If you just gave a character purple/pale/green skin, that they're zombies might not be the first thing that occurs to the audience. Maybe their aliens, hermits, some sort of alternate race? On the other hand just being stitched doesn't tell the audience their undead any more than just skin color. The character designers have to look to multiple tropes assosiated with the undead, ragged/gothic clothes, pale/purple/green skin, stitches, eyes/limbs missing, bones sticking out, etc. in order to get the audience to immediately realize "that's a zombie!"

Strange, I had always thought that stitches are associated with Frankenstein's monster types and not zombies.

Well, The Monster is one of the most iconic undead characters out there. Even if he's kinda sorta a different kind of creature, people are naturally going to assosiate some of his characteristics with the supernatural/undead.

Well it's already been said that Hsien-Ko is a specific type of mythical undead creature that's not exactly a zombie.

Hsien-Ko, A.B.A.
I imagine you're pretty familiar with the L4D witch.
I used to be a huge Veronica Madaraki fan in my youth.

And, although it's already been said, there is no denying who the greatest zombies in gaming are:

Abner Cadaver is so cool. Was recently debating making him my avatar, but I'm pretty pleased with my sleazy Riccardo picture

p.s. Stay far FAR away from Grim Tales... it's
Awful.

Yeah, those guys definitely look more like Frankensteins than zombies. I mean, the one guy even has stitches across his forehead! Why would a zombie EVER have that?!

Also, I find it kinda amusing how the two guy zombies are gruff and scary-looking while the girl zombie is all anime.

Maybe he had the top of his head sliced off, died, and had it reattached for his funeral.
You don't know :D

I'm sorry I couldn't have been more useful!

Funny how we've collectively only come up with Warm Bodies and Corpse Bride, excluding Lockjaws' contributions.

Suddenly occurs to me that there's also a Jiangshi in Touhou now. Copious fan art there, can probably find some that's more typical zombie stuff.

Izombie.

Does Kiya from Medievil II count? I mean you can consider her a mummy, sorta, though she's really closer to a reanimated corpse.

I always like the zombie girl from vileville.
it's a shame the creator of the series is a shit
and there will never be anything more than just the pilot.

Here's a cool webcomic I found a while ago that revolves around the lives of intelligent zombies. The main protagonist isn't female, but the cast does include some zombie girls.

So cute! I would totally wear that tee!
I really need to catch up on this show. Fortunately it doesn't have that many episodes as of now.

I dunno, the show is so far apart from the iZombie comic, I couldn't get into it. Not to say the comic is flawless, but it is weird to see an adaptation that's so different from the source. The show isn't bad, just not what I expected.

I found a picture and had to bring it here. I got a clue who the jianshi with Squigly is in the pic I found on pixiv from a post earlier in this thread by LockjawSaga. I'm guessing it is Yoshika Miyako from something called the Touhou Project.

Looks great, but... where's Leviathan?

Okay, it looks like this topic's gone on for about a year and a half without mention of Ghoulia Yelps from Monster High--as someone whose avatar is of another character from that franchise, I feel compelled to bring her up.

I went through the topic, and while it seems the original poster has been banned, I should point out that she has no stitches or known missing body parts. (For the record, she is the "geek" character, though in typical fashion of this franchise, it's taken up to eleven to where she and Frankie are teen geniuses bordering on, or maybe actually are, mad scientists.)
