That the second the clock hit midnight on the day a certain food expired, it would spontaneously grow mold, get mushy, and do all the other stuff food does when it gets expired. I don't know how or why I thought this, I mean, I ate expired food (by accident!) too many times as a kid.

Isn't Squigly's sing super called "Squigly Battle Opera"? That should actually explain. I didn't think a lot.... And yeah, Eliza seems like the opera type too. But I don't think we have solid proof, other than opera as a common SG theme.
