those characters arent being removed, the art is being updated. thats not the same thing. plus, considering the areas got a new color palette, the art would need an update anyway so you dont have characters who were designed for a more muted color scheme to clash against the more vibrant one...

You say unecessary but the new female and new endings add more content to the game. None of the old content was removed in favor of the new stuff and without getting into spoilers, Alex is actually a good edition that actually fits and provides solid reasons to add in the new endings.
