    Usually the problem is the propellant the spray uses. If the can says its foam-friendly you're probably good, but try it on a scrap piece first to be sure. I used to make a lot of Warhammer 40,000 terrain so I've run into this a fair bit. Foam board is good stuff.

    Just in case you're not aware, many spray paints will eat foam. The blade looks to be foamcore, so you'll want to seal the edges with some white glue. For the styrofoam ball mentioned in the link a mixture of water and white glue should work.

    Are you in-game when you try it? PS3 sticks won't work on the PS4 menus, but should be fine once you launch the game.

    Depending on exactly what your problem is, it may be something simple like the stick itself needing lubrication. The only other thing that comes to mind offhand is that one of the microswitches might be dying.
