I don't consider them weird at all. They've been doing them since around '93 (as has SNK) and fighting games as we know them got their start in '91.

Derek Bun won Third Strike. I don't think LuckyD entered. He was busy all day announcing brackets, getting stuff organized, and MKX was starting up at the same time as Third Strike. As far as I know, the only thing LuckyD entered was Ultra.
