Yeah it seems battle characters generally have same functionality in game world as normal. I managed to pickup a ringlet while in battle. I didn't find it hard to get up there at all.

I managed to smack it with the axe once but it seems to be pretty pixel perfect.

I feel ashamed I didn't get Clearest on first try. Mostly cause I forgot about that OTHER ability you get now from the boss...

Was it on stairs or uneven terrain? That's probably what caused it in my case.
