The Consuming Shadow is the new game by Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw of Zero Punctuation fame, which puts you in the role of a woefully unprepared person on a quest to save the world from a nightmarish being beyond our comprehension, a task for which he brought one 9mm pistol, a single first aid kit, and a syringe full of Heroin. Needless to say, it probably won't go well. Thankfully, it doesn't really matter much, as pretty much the same thing is happening an infinite amount of multiverses, so if one universe goes shit, there's still always more.
The main gameplay of The Consuming Shadow involves the player going through towns across the English countryside corrupted by Shadow to learn about the three gods tainting this reality, their agenda, and the four-part banishment ritual to shove it out from our universe, with occasional pit stops at safe towns for ammo, supplies, lucky charms, and drugs of dubious legality, all with a hanging deadline of
The game is currently only available for purchase through the Humble store (Bundled with digital versions of Yahtzee's two books, MogWorld and Jam), but there is a Steam Greenlight campaign running, both of which can be found on the game's official website.
I've been following this games development since the alpha was released about a year ago, and I'm loving the game so far. I would recommend it if you're a fan of A) Tense Survival-Horror resource management, B) FTL style permadeath rougelikes, and/or C) Detective-ing up solutions with limited evidence.
