2014 sales numbers for smash in the US are out.

  • Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U sold over 1.7 million physical and digital units and 1.3 million physical and digital units, respectively, in 2014.
  • Total sales of amiibo figures in 2014 are nearly twice the sales of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
  • Nintendo 3DS also had a strong December, including its largest month ever for first-party software sales. This was primarily fueled by Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, which has already surpassed 2 million combined physical and digital units sold in a little more than three months.

That's not how clones work. They couldn't just up and make a new moveset for Dark Pit, unless they were planning on adding him as a unique character from the start (which they weren't, he was originally just an alt costume).
 
But since Dark Pit was fleshed out as his own character in KI:U, it would have made sense for him to be fleshed out in Smash as well.

I would have expected Dark Pit to be a clone if anyone besides Sakurai was making Smash, but Sakurai LOVES his characters. It only seemed natural that Dark Pit would be more developed than this.

You realize this could only happen at the expense of another (non-clone) newcomer, right? Not even Sakurai is backwards enough to put in 2 full KI:U newcomers over other potential characters. It's barely big enough of a franchise to justify Palutena getting in let alone her AND clone pit.
 
Dark Pit has the same voice actor, so I guess makes sense that Pit and Dark Pit have the same moveset, too? And they say almost exactly the same quotes? I swear, I feel like they just took Pit's model, color swapped it, and gave it angry eyes-ohwaittheydidittothekirbyhats. I just think Dark Pit was added because of all of the KI:U stuff in this game. I think Yoshi or Wario could get a bit more love, in my opinion.

He was added because he was an alternate costume and the team ran out of time for making new characters so instead they upgraded Doc Lucy and Dark Pit into full characters. And I guess because he's more popular than Alph, who could have potentially been upgraded to character status over any of those 3.

You guys are aware that if this is Sakurai's last game, we'll get all the characters we could ever want and more in SSB 5 right?

I'll be happy once Dark Pit get's removed and replaced by the proper clone AKA Lucas.
 
Yeah, they already got the alt. moves for Ness, what more could you ask for? I heard that they allowed that in tournaments, actually, so you still got your Lucas in the form of Ness. You just can't use him online.

I see Ness, not Lucas.
That's saying Luigi is playable as Mario if you give him his moves as customs.

Well, it's kinda the best we got for a Lucas, sadly, but at least you can still play as him in Brawl, if you want. I think he's in Project M, too, so we got that. Custom moves are one of my favorite things in this game, actually. They really spice up your playstyle if you use them right. That's why Topspin Gordos are the best thing

My Wii broke, but my friend has gotten Brawl yesterday, so I'll be harassing him for all my Lucas needs.
 
I hope that whoever heads Smash 5 can throw Metroid a little more love, just so we can get
  • A new stage that isn't lava/acid
  • A new playable character that isn't Samus
  • A new music selection that isn't Metroid main theme/Theme of Samus/Theme of Ridley remixed to hell and back

You know what, the only thing I'd like to happen is for there to be more DLC besides Mewtwo. It would be pretty sweet if we did get a few more characters overtime, and maybe, if Nintendo played their cards right, another third party one. There's so much possibility of DLC for this game, it's a crime we're only getting one character.

Honestly it is a little disappointing,
like custom moves had the potential to be really cool ways to extend the representation of a series, like imagine if every character got what Mega Man got instead of two extra sets of Sakurai'd specials.

I could pull one for Samus off the top of my head
Neutral - Multi-hitting Wave Beam and Thoron-esque Plasma Beam
Side - Long hitstun ice missiles and Seeker Missiles with less tracking properties and speed but more range.
Down - Bombs not affected by gravity (as they are in the actual games) and Super Bombs with long startup times and defuseability
Up - Metroid Prime Screw Attack that goes forward and not up and Shinespark which hits once with little knockback but a long distance

and stuff like it, like Pikachu getting Thunder Wave or Mario getting his Ice Balls,
obviously there's only so much you can do and the custom moves turned out fine all things considered but it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity.

One problem with number 1. 8 Characters make the game crash on 3ds. I do agree with Wolf and Lucas, though. And I kinda do with Ice Climbers were back in. If anything, I'd say Kraid needs a spot in the Sunlight as a Metroid Rep, whose with me?
 
Kraid stands in line behind Ridley, Rundas, Sylux, Gandrayda, Ghor, Dark Samus, Anthony Higgs, Adam Malcovitch, the SA-X, Computer Adam Malcovitch, and Torizo.
In that order.
Probably.
