Monster Hunter

You just don't listen Sano.
One. Guess. For. Each. Person.
Whatever, the time limit is up anyway.

The answer is, I'm a Gunner. I prefer Light-Medium Bowguns for mobility but I'll occasionally use Heavy Bowguns.
Yes the soon to be legendary Zen is not so predictable. Allow me to explain, Bowguns are the only weapons that can properly harness the destructive power of Fire. Flaming S, Crag S, Clust S, Wyvern Fire, it's all way too irresistible. Fire and explosions are just my thing, and I like to get up close and personal with them so I don't miss.

well, there was only like, 3 other guys besides you and me on this thread, so we were bound to run out of guesses sometime. Sorry for bothering you though.

and sweet. So we got some heavy hitters, a long range hunter, and I've been using dual blades, we got a pretty good hunting team if we wanted to go online.

I mainly use dual blades because I like being able to combo unto things and demonizing is so fun!

Monster Hunter is a game best played with friends, and a party with a Gunner for support has a distinct advantage. Feels good to know that I'm a rare and valued Hunter, if only I didn't cause so much chaos in the field...

Anyway if I decide to get the game then I guess I'd be up for some online play.

But... But... (Butt...) Crag, Clust, and WyvernFire don't do Fire damage. But they are a ton of fun (especially using Crag at point-blank range).

Also, Medium? I'm pretty sure that that was only an experiment in the original Tri and is never coming back.

I would be a Gunner if I weren't too cheap to buy ammo and coatings. I will just sit there with Normal Level One Shots all day though, he-he.

unfortunately all I have at the moment is freedom unite on my vita. ;u; its still a great game though.

and I'm scared about being on a team since dual blades have to be up close and personal with the target. So scared of,being in the crossfire...

Crag, Clust, and WyvernFire don't do Fire damage.
That's news to me.
Whatever, it still looks like fire.

That fucking sucks, Medium Guns had the perfect combination of mobility and firepower.
Can I still mix and match Stocks, Frames, and Barrels?

You would hate me then, I tend to cause a lot of collateral damage with Clust S.
Enjoy trying to hack away at a wyvern's legs while it's raining explosions.

you could always wait till we get the target down and go to town once we do. I also like to use shock traps so there's also that.

Oh, I was saying it jokingly, I thought that everybody knew that. They're still incredibly effective on every monster, since they're not Fire and therefor the monster doesn't have to be weak to Fire to make it worth it. So, they've got all the visual appeal of Fire, but not the negatives. It's a win-win.

And no, no combining, they found out really quickly that that made it incredibly easy to get a way too over-powered Bowgun.

Clust friendly fire won't actually damage the teammate, just knock them back or flinch them. I'm pretty sure it knocks back in an invincible state (I don't recall entirely, I know that Crag does though).

well, if there's no damage, I'll be fine with that. I'll just try to keep the target between me and Zen then.

The only friendly fire that can actually do damage is from Barrel Bombs.

I like to set random bombs during some hunts though, so... There is that.

well, seems like its hard to barrel bomb someone unexpectedly. I still think a trap works better than a bomb.

Sleep bombing is love, sleep bombing is life.

So, what are everybody's main classes?

We've got Dual Blades with an interest in Lances.
A Medium Gunner - who could go to either Light or Heavy (or possibly even Bows).
A Hammer and Longsword user.
A Great Sword swordsman.

Am I missing anything from anybody?

Also fun to note is that the build I used in Tri (was only barely G-rank or whatever HR the equivalent was in that game, so didn't have a lot of really high level gear) was mainly used for traps. A really good solo build with Hammer or LS/SA with Paralyze since it made setting up bombs and traps super easy. Not sure how well the build would work against the stronger G-rank monsters in a group session though.

I could pop the disk in and check what I was equipped with but it's just too sad. I might cry.

I'd just like to ask everyone's opinion on this.
Is Monster Hunter better as a fixed console or portable console game?

I honestly feel like it works just as well on both. The primary issue with portable MH being that the controls are trash.

I think that Monster Hunter is a lot like Pokémon or Animal Crossing. It's one of those very personal games that feels better to carry around with you. Yeah the controls suffer on the portable versions but that didn't change the fact I put way more hours in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite than I did in Monster Hunter Tri.
I'm hoping that the Circle Pad Pro can remedy some of those control problems.

The way I played Tri was on my desk in my bedroom on a 17" CRT. Very up-close and personal, and very comfy, kind of like an MMO on PC. I can't imagine trying to play a marathon session on a 50-inch LCD like twenty feet away from my face. I think the kind of environment you play the game in does have an effect on how long you want to play it. The advantage to portable games is you can pretty much play anywhere you want.

I think it's because of the type of game that Monster Hunter is. It's all completely mission based, so there was never any incentive for me to play for long periods of time. I think the longest amount of time I've ever played the game in one sitting was 5 hours at most.

Monster Hunter is the type of game that I play in short increments throughout the day, and making it portable facilitates that style of play. On a 3DS I can easily do a quest here or there when I feel like it. During breakfast, during a break at work, after a hard workout, before I go to bed, etc.

I can't do that on a fixed console, and it just doesn't feel natural to me.

I think a Monster Hunter on Vita would be perfect.

you can use the touch screen for item management or to activate some kind of targeting mechanism, and it could even have Vita TV integration.

It feels more natural to solo in small sessions at your own discretion, but when you get online with friends and you have a specific set of gear you want to grind drops for, you can really get lost in the game. I'm sure MH4U is going to have great online multiplayer but I'd honestly rather play multiplayer MH on a larger screen and with a keyboard. The games really open up in multiplayer, too.

A MH on Vita WOULD be perfect but there's a lot of competition on the system in-between Freedom Wars, God Eater 2, Toukiden, and some others that I'm probably forgetting about.

You do have a point there, I distinctly remember playing more multiplayer on Tri than on Unite. Of course the PSP had terrible mutiplayer and the Wii was just getting used to it.
I think that single player is better portable, but multiplayer is better fixed. Some kind of cross-play function between the 3DS and the Wii U might actually make me want the latter.

It doesn't matter though, I don't have the cash for that.

competition would mean nothing to monster hunter.

because it's monster hunter. no clone can simply just take it's place.

Well if not competing for an audience, at least competing for the players' time.

We need to all get together and do some mh3u online.

Before we do that I hneed to know something about all of you. Are you all playing the Wii U or 3DS version?
I only have a 3DS. I don't even have the game yet so your answers may actually influence whether I'll buy it or not.

I'm only playing freedom unite on my vita, but I've set the controls to where the right stick controls the camera and it works wonders.

EDIT:

I also played the 3DS demo. the controls felt alright. not amazing, but they worked.

I have both the 3ds and WiiU versions.

Forgot to most my mains:

Gunlance - Will use on harder missions.
Hunting Horn- I use this most of the time now.

Currently learning S&S and LBG

I'm only on 3DS. No WiiU in the foreseeable future, though I'd like one. I'll be getting MH4. Not sure if MH3U would be worth it for me at this point but I'm strongly leaning towards it anyway.

I only have the Wii U version.

About whether or not the game is best on a home system or a portable system, Capcom mainly wants to put the series on portable systems, so that's where we'll be seeing it mostly. The primary reason we even got 3 Ultimate on the Wii U was because they hadn't figured out online play on the 3DS yet.

Also, sorry for the double-posting, I had just woken up and didn't realize that I was the last one to comment on here.

Hunters unite! From the lowliest of Lynian's to the fiercest of Elder Dragons, it's time to talk about Monster Hunter!

I fucking love Monster Hunter.
Isn't Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate coming out soon?

Holy shit that's even sooner than thought.
Should I buy a Circle Pad Pro for this?

why not buy the NEW 3DS with a built-in circle pad? :PUN:

I'm pretty sure MH4U is compatible with the CPP, my experience with the demo for 3U without the CPP was manageable but there were plenty of situations in which it would have been a lot nicer.

If you don't value portability it'll probably the better way to play the game.

I haven't properly played a MH since they shut down the servers for Tri on the Wii. I can't wait for 4U and I neglected to pick up 3U because by the time I got a 3DS I knew 4 was going to be localized, and it has online. I hope I can pick up a Wii U at some point, hopefully people will still be playing 3U online (or the servers will still be up) in a year or two.

February 13th indeed. I pre-ordered the MH4U New 3DS edition, so I'm pretty stoked to play the game on day 1. I've been playing the demo a bit and so far I'm liking a lot about what's new to the series.

I played MH3U both on Wii U and 3DS fairly extensively and never felt a need to purchase a Circle Pad Pro. I don't ever use any of the lock-on functionality either. You can customize the bottom screen of the game pretty heavily, and one of the nifty little features is that you can place a virtual d-pad on the bottom touch screen for camera movement. You can even resize it, scale it, and place it wherever you like to make camera movement more comfortable. A Circle Pad Pro would be very nice, but I definitely never felt the need for it in my 600+ hours of MH3U.

I am, however, purchasing the New 3DS and I'm very much looking forward to the addition of the c-stick. Some people prefer having a physical stick over a virtual d-pad enough to warrant the purchase of a Circle Pad Pro, so it's up to you as to whether or not you really want it.
