Couldn't find an already existing thread, so I made this one.

The first level of Doom 4's available to download as a free demo on Steam. I played it last night, and enjoyed it so much I jumped right back in on a harder difficulty. With just the weak starter energy pistol. Which I love. Nothing like moving around, taking careful aim, and turning a baddie's head into a spurting fountain of blood.

Also, the glory kills are awesome. I ripped a demon's leg off and shoved it, boot-first, through the demon's face. It was glorious.

I did have some trouble getting it to work, but that's a several-year-old laptop with out of date video drivers for you.

Oh surprised this didn't get any posts. Doom is great.

I haven't tried the new one yet, but in preparation I've been revisiting 1 and 2. I also played Brutal Doom for the first time, loving it.

Only thing I'm worried about with Doom 4 is that it seems to take the more modern approach of locking you in an enemy arena till you kill everything. Part of the joy of Doom 1 and 2, was that it was not only a reflex driven 3d shmup focused on dodging telegraphed enemy projectiles on reaction, but that it busted genres with dungeon-crawl esque maze exploration, secret finding, resource management, and a smidgen of horror.

Still though, I like the look of the combat in Doom 4, and the aesthetic is nice (could use some more blue from what I've seen but good enough). I also like what I've seen of the overall story and tone, and the in-jokes. I feel like they got the sense of "fun" from the old games perfectly (something especially and increasingly rare in modern aaa games), so I can forgive whatever minor misteps there might be. Doom 1 and 2 are masterpieces after all, so any kind of comparison to them is always going to be tough on the new guy.

Looking forward to playing Doom 4. Thinking I'll get the PS4 version, though the idea of the pc version eventually getting mods is interesting...

There is some of that- A computer alert even says, "Demonic presence at unsafe levels. Locking down facilities until demons are eliminated."- but there's also a lot of secrets, including very well hidden levers that unlock classic Doom 1 and 2 levels. Generally speaking, if you're in trouble you can run away, find pickups, and run back in.

Also, apparently the demo lets you play on Nightmare. It's pretty dang tough, you die really quickly. I really want to go through the whole game on a Nightmare- Pistol Only run. It's antithetical to the whole "weapon variety, blaze of glory" thing, but so satisfying.

Sounds nice. That element of strategy of being able to escape an encounter is nice.

I know there's a demo for PC version, so maybe I'll try that later once I get some work done.
