I don't like censorship. I liked the guest art and don't like that it was removed. I don't like devs kowtowing to vocal minorities that do not play the game when the game is already dying. It's dumb to remove fanservice from a game that literally wore it on it's sleeve and attracted many players to begin with. They made the big band beating scene a race thing when the whole reason he was beaten was for being a good cop rather than being black. They have now proven to have a track record of editing/removing art/frames from the game and I don't want to see the art of the game change any more. You don't care, and that's fine. It doesn't affect you and it seems like if it was all kept in, you would have continued to play. I DO care, and these changes have driven me (and others) away from the game, which negatively affects it overall. That's why I don't like it.

The censorship that offends me is the fact that it happened at all. And sure, they might have decided to go through with the changes internally on their own, but they're still changing things that I don't agree with that differ from the product I originally bought. It's their right to change the product they made, as is my right to stop using or endorsing their product to anyone I know because I am the consumer.
As for big band, police violence is horrible, yes. That's the whole point. He got beat to shreds and put in an iron lung, his whole story is grim and the art reflected that. Removing it makes it seem (to me) that it has become a race issue now rather than anything that had to do with his story. It also goes back to general censorship and my disagreement with it.
As for fanservice being what attracted players, the game's first tagline in the early trailers was literally "Hot 2d fighting." Most of the original characters were blatantly sexualized and had jiggle physics and revealing clothing as one of the first things you see. There was also the infamous Zone Filia porn flash that Tomar (the skullgirls announcer) was a voice in that endorsed the game at the very end. That flash had 300,000 views only 1 month (pic related) after it released, and you better believe there would have been people who went and bought the game after seeing that for the first time. All the changes might not affect the gameplay of the game, but not everyone plays this game for the gameplay. The artwork is handdrawn and lovely, and if that's one of the things I buy a game for, changing that would sour my opinion of it. At the end of the day, they changed something I don't agree with as a consumer, and that will directly result in me spending less money on it and negatively affecting the game overall.

Basically just heard about this new information and update to the game as I'm typing. I'll voice my opinion and leave it at that. I won't post again on this thread.

I think the censorship that is going on here has no justifiable reason to be executed for this game. No one, not even the people supporting the decision to remove all the aforementioned content, had a problem with any of these themes or story elements or artwork being included in the game for years on end up to yesterday. Taking away the artwork and concepts that helped build up the world/universe of Skullgirls is such an insult to the vision of the creators and the fans (including me) that enjoyed the gritty dark and contemplative setting that Skullgirls had for more than a decade.

I would like to take in good faith that the "developers know what they are doing", but if you have to make an announcement that you're censoring content, it shows you're not really interested in making a creative piece of media to begin with or even voicing a compelling perspective. This is something I honestly didn't think Hidden Variable and Future Club would do. I don't think even the former Lab Zero would have done this either. Effectively you've neutered any kind of creative depictions of depth or maturity and complexity in favor of taking another step at turning the game into "visual marketable comfort" for likely no benefit to yourselves either. I can't imagine there would be enough irreverent people that would appreciate this decision enough to make them buy the game.

I used to be a big fan of this game but even now with so much that has happened, I can see that there's a lot of creative incompetence that exists between the people that are tasked with administrating it from 2019 to now. I do hope for everyone's best interest that all of the developers that administrate/work on Skullgirls now find alternative careers besides video game development and artwork/animation, because your skills don't fit the bill for us consumers. Get new jobs and leave the game alone.

^Lmao person above us is dead wrong, rarely talked to anyone outside of this website about Skullgirls actively because the imagery and some of the themes of Skullgirls always made us uncomfortable the older we got. Hated the nazi imagery in college, hated it years after, hated it since last week, hated it yesterday, and I'm actively cheering it's fucking gone. I saw a kid dress up as an egret soldier with the armband for cosplay. A KID, looked like a toddler, but it's also been a few years since. I never want to see that possibility EVER AGAIN. And we are GLAD it's gone!! Glad!!!

It's not censorship if it's actively content that hurts innocent people! Sometimes shit needs to be shoveled out of a game because it's just actively harmful and that's it. Skullgirls is a game that's still actively updating with new characters. If it wants to be a game that stands in modern times, it needs to, idk, be up to modern day standards.

And, no offense, I don't know many people anymore willing to give Skullgirls a shot if it still had that garbage baked into it's game.

Like, what the actual hell, right? We remember it clearly. People actively made jokes back in the day that it was easier to switch to a porn tab than show your parents you were playing Skullgirls. This has been a problem! For a long time!

NOT TO MENTION, I know how fandoms work, you let something stick in, it becomes a thing that's just unchallengable. The idea nobody had problems with it isn't because nobody did, it's because everyone that did left. There's a really great quote that goes along the lines of "If you make a space for sheep and wolves, all you'll be left with is wolves."

If Skullgirls is still selling copies, then I don't wanna be in a space where shitty people feel comfortable with it's mistakes. I want them challenged. And if they can't take it, then good riddance. I don't really care if they update it cause they CAN do what they want. but there's no easy way to go back to Pre indvis, there's no "SG classic" and as someone who owns physical copies but cant play it without online, or on a non weird console like the vita I'm annoyed I have to take the changes. Its plain just rude to scoff at people who want to preserve stuff like guest art, npcs, etc.

They're removing guest art and I bet that the guest npc's will eventually go too.


Mvc2, melee, Mvc3, Third strike, DS, have these communities 20+ years old, you can play those games as released. You cant go back to a different version of SG in case you didn't like gameplay changes.

Though I think them locking the announce and updating right away is a slap to the community esp since they always pretend to be an open dev team. it feels like They know what they're doing is controversial and don't want to hear it.

In the early days SG was selling poorly to the point it needed a fundraising campaign, SG has been censored post fundraising and survived just fine I don't think people saw porn and thought "gee this game sure is cool!" 'cause at least when I bought it, that wasn't the case, I didn't even know the zone porn existed until later. I bought it 'cause it looked like a fun game. Eliza's story is virtually unchanged, Filia's ass is still there on every frame, she just doesn't have white panties anymore, Double is still some tentacle fetish, Bella's boobs are still all over the damn place as well as val. Nothing really changed, and yes I checked because I like to know what changed something I don't think a lot of people do. Anyway it's crazy how those 300k viewers don't play the game at all (the game is estimated sales are about a million apparently at least according to steamdb) and any core players that do still play the game don't seem to make a big fuss about it. All I see are like maybe 50 people complaining and the rest seem indifferent so good luck ig. I have to imagine a gacha game with like 10M downloads will still continue to fund both mobile and console without your help.

About Big Band, that one is above my scope I'm afraid but my stance is that his story is largely the same and the implications of how he became Big
Band are the same but hey if it's that big of a deal you can always watch various playthroughs on YouTube or play an old version of the game

Hah, oh man. We remember some discussions like these on this forum years back too.

Anywhoo, this honestly got us interested in getting the DLC fighter pass for the game. Didn't really know where, like, the direction the new team would take Skullgirls in. And as much as we like Annie, Umbrella, Marie... can't deny also felt a tiny bit uncomfy considering the game's problems with imagery around minors. But this direction makes us feel a bit more comfortable and safe with that moving forward. It's just one of our things that we care about a lot.
