The Net Neutrality / Internet Freedom Thread

I doubt that this will do anything, but I did sign it, so... good luck?
You could also call your representative to say 'hey, don't let the companies have nazi-esce control over the internet, k thanks"

Major suspense right now on how this will turn out

bump times 3? Or is the danger averted?

I don't like being political or politics, but you know what? THIS. MEANS. WAR!!

So, guess what? The good ol' US of A's government decided to say "Fuck u dipshitz" again, but this time, rather than using a law, they're doing it through shady back door dealings and a LOOPHOLE!

And now, thanks to this, net neutrality is DEAD.

... For now. Yes, that's right, we can SAVE it. I'm posting links to about... three different petitions, which you can sign to - hopefully - save net neutrality.

So, please, do your part and sign. And, if you have any - let me repeat that, ANY - petitions you've found on your own, or have any new info, please post it in the comments section.

Save Net Neutrality Now!

lol, petitions.

lol, petitions

Why the "lol"??

Why the "lol"??
Well... I've seen a lot of online petitions, but I've never actually seen one do anything. Especially with something like this where the people whose minds they're trying to change already know that a vast majority of people loathe what they're doing.
Petitions don't have any power, they're just a list of angry people. It's up to the people who start this bullshit whether they care about that list.

Thanks for sharing this video op.

God this pisses me off. I don't know what to do. This is already somewhat enacted via geo addressing... I can't get on netflix from Australia, though I should be able to and it was once possible.

If there are people out there that think that this wont adversely affect them ( or their wallets) they are delusional. Imagine having to pay a subscription fee just to access skullheart. Or srk. Or to or any website you like to go to.

I don't want this, the internet should be as free as possible for all people. Imagine them straight up blocking sites they don't want you to see... If it's republicans it could be porn sites cause "they are the devil"...

I'm so tired of other people sticking their nose in my business. And fuck this, I don't want to be charged for every site that I visit, nor do I want a "bandwidth tax" there are soooo many things that are straight up fucked that they can do with this.

Think of it this way:

The internet was and is a life and society changer. If net neutrality goes extinct, IT is a game changer. The things that we hold to be dear and things that we love will be taken away from us overnight. And other countries will of course follow suit. So... Everyone NOT in the us will be hurt even more. They will more than likely be blocked from all us sites, per tax or tariff. This is a way for the governments of the world to control what you see and hear even more than they already have. This isn't good for anyone outside of the governments themselves.... Pls pls pls sign these petitions and go to whatever sites you go to and simply make posts/threads about net neutrality being taken away.

Believe me when I say that people care, they just don't know yet.

... And now that I look at the first link.... This looks super dodgy. Like a bait and switch of some sort. Scare us into signing some petition that takes away even more rights from us while being set up to be a savior. I don't know about this. Something is really weird.

Well, what are we supposed to do, then? Any bright ideas?

RIP internet...

Well, what are we supposed to do, then? Any bright ideas?

I don't think theres crap we can do.
Call me a pessimist but i expect this to happen, in the not-so-distant future. I have no reason to believe USA will ever do the right thing in any situation, the country is so unbelievably corrupt, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

While I understand your pessimism, I don't want to see the Internet die, at least not if I can fight for it to live.

Call me naïve, but if we have to stage a revolt, then I say "do it". Maybe I am being naïve, or maybe just a too passionate anarchist, but even if this does jack shit, even if nothing works, I want to at least say "we tried".

You do know there's a pretty wide variety of protesting methods. Nearly all of which are better than a petition.

Well...
For right now we're at a ceasefire- nothing is happening immediately. And there's a chance that nothing super significant happens from this, since I'm sure a lot of companies are hesitant to piss off massive amounts of people. But the moment shit does start happening it won't be very hard to find a bunch of pissed people ready to do whatever it takes to get net neutrality back, and it'll be SOPA rallies all over again. And if a vast majority of people that own a computer and an internet connection can't stop this shit, then throw up the white flag, scream "George Orwell was right" and start researching methods of colonizing mars, because we're all fucked.

Easy, you know why delegalizing alcohol is impossible (other than the economy worth)? Because mafia and other illegal organizations would get a LOT of money as they would be the only people still selling it. They may try to destroy the internet but before long there will be alternatives that will crap on this.

... Some strange part of me thinks that would be fucking cool. Living on another planet, away from all the morons...

It's not a bait-and-switch, the loss of net neutrality is a BIG deal.

Thank you, Mike. Thank you so much...

I just signed it yesterday. Imagine trying to do research for an assignment at school with this mess or maybe trying to communicate with friends.

Exactly! This isn't a gamer only problem; everyone and their MOTHER is affected by this.

A more accurate way of saying it is that everyone who uses the internet in any way will be directly and negatively impacted by these changes, if they become permanent.

Thanks, Government.

Okay. Let me just be blatant about this. You all remember SOPA? You all remember how it was mentally retarded? You all remember how it was being written by old people who admitted to not even knowing how to operate a damn keyboard? Now, remember how joyous we were when it got dropped? Well, guess what?

IT'S FUCKING BACK!!

Petition #2: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/pe...-staydown-efforts-and-other-policies/dXMRvNh8

Not even gonna waste time talking about it. Just spread the word around. Write your name on the petition, and spread it to everyone you know and love and maybe even only know as an acquaintance. This needs to be stopped.

STOP SOPA 2014! FOR GREAT JUSTICE!

EDIT: Despite terrible wording, the first one reached its goal. Now we have this second one, which is much better worded, and has roughly the same goal. However, we have about two weeks to reach that goal for this one, so I vote we blow it the FUCK outta the water!

I'm not finding any sources confirming any new SOPA-esque legislation currently in motion, and the petition mentioned is extremely vague and uninformative.

Care to help a brother out here?

We've had like 5 of these threads, so I've merged them all into one.

Also, that petition just linked makes it seem like SOPA is some anti-fanart legislation without any other repurcussions - surely there are better ones out there.

Excellent point. Which is why I shall start searching.

I thought this thread died and everyone stopped caring, good to know I'm not the only one who still knows about this.

man ive been out on the loop. next thing you know they will be sending us tickets just for having fan art and they would be shutting down websites left and right. well if all else fails...

One of these days I'll be savvy enough with these kinds of forums to know how to post a gif. ... Also, to know how to quote people properly. That, too.

if we win this thing ill be flapping my arms around and dancing like this.

I doubt we will the FCC is losing traction, the media isn't covering this, and big money usually wins in the end... all in the name of the rich, and wealthy...

Wait, so if this law passes, does that mean no one can make fan made frames for the DLC characters anymore?

all i know is that if we dont win there is gonna be some big repercussions not only for us but for them as well. i would imagine people would protest or boycott if this passed. kinda like what Rosa Parks did for black people about bus rules. they started to carpool with others or walked and biked there way around. like for us we could just go back to gatherings in arcades like in the 90s just hang out there. i could see that happening.
