I'm gonna say that Ruby and Sapphire's relationship is too unique to really define as lovers or sisters or soulmates or what have you.
They aren't human and gem relationships have been described so far as similar in appearance but really different in principle, as far as I can tell. The only thing that I can really call Ruby and Sapphire is "Two halves of a whole" since they generally just seem more comfortable and happy as a single more powerful entity

Not sure gay/les/bi thing actually counts when the entire species has no gender.

BUt then that brings up the question of why all gems appear and refer to each other with female pronouns.
 
Instead of genderless I believe gems have only one gender, the female one.
I doubt they are genderless/sexless because otherwise Steven couldn't be made and, as you say, they wouldn't use she pronoun.

I have the same question as you count bleck. They all appear and sound female so I don't get why they are sexless/genderless. I think it'd be cool if all gems were female canonically. The romantic relationship of Ruby and Sapphire...I really want to know more about it as it presents so many questions about the gem race.
 
I dunno, ask Rebecca Sugar. She's the one who said they were Genderless during a reddit ask session. I can see if I can dig it from TV Tropes, but might take a bit to find the exact quote.
 
What if they're just whatever they feel like at the moment?

Like with Amethyst's wrestler transformation.
 
Meh, Asari are genderless and they all look female, that may just be their default look, breasts and hips don't automatically equal female, and the "she" thing is a failing of the English language, there is no gender neutral pronoun and I refuse to call someone "it".

Maybe they're this planet's version of "female", but galatically neutral?

Asari can have kids with any gender, but considering they're the ones always carrying the life, earthlings would consider them all female.
 
I think the official explanation was similar to what happened to Pearl. They can take any form they wish, and we already know they can shapeshift as well, so appearance must not mean much to them at all.

Except that Pearl keeps her knew clothes, Garnet keeps her shades and Amethyst knows how much fun it is to change appearances, so it must be more of a learned thing than an inherit "I don't care how I look" thing.
 
i honestly would just prefer if Gems just didn't have a standard romantic type of attraction
i mean
they are aliens, so it makes more sense to me if they had a nonstandard kind of pairing/relationship going on for them.
Like I said before, Ruby and Sapphire had a relationship that didn't feel romantic to me, due to how they become Garnet and generally prefer being Garnet over being Ruby and Sapphire individually.
like, you could call it a weird relationship metaphor, but I just find it more interesting for Gemkind to have this sort of weird "fusemates" kind of thing going on

Look, I didn't believe it at first because usually, same sex relationships aren't displayed on kid shows. It's like a barrier or something, it is apparent and you know it is there, but others say different.

I think people know, but don't want to admit it. We also don't want to wake up the "Vigiliant Citizens" or "Moral Guardians" to go up in arms.

I actually do think they went too far to get past the russian propaganda laws though. I mean two girls kissed, and then garnet sang a song about how she's "made of love." It's not really a "but maybe they were just good friends" situation. Kind of wondering if CN dropped support from Russia or something.

Nah disney definitely cares. They were going to add a gay couple to the episode "The Love God" but Disney stopped them. That's why Mabel's wearing a rainbow sweater in that episode.
