Time to start a new training diary!
I think the old one has long since served it's purpose by now and needs to be archived, so I've asked @Midiman to handle that.
Also, all videos will be linked, not embedded, for courtesy reasons. (If I can figure out how to get the forum to not automatically embed my YouTube links..)
Here's the stuff I have in mind to discuss currently. ESSAY TIME.
- What do I do with Parasoul? I'm not sure I'll ever play her correctly or if she's "right" for me. I'm about ready to push her to the backburner for a while, or good.
I don't think I've ever figured out how to play her properly and I can't seem to wrap my head around it even now..
My pressure falls flat and making people respect me with her seems impossible no matter how much I think I understand what I should be doing.
Sometimes I'm very successful with her but more often than not all of my decisions feel like wild guesses rather than really knowing what I'm doing.
I throw out jLP with no confidence. It's not like Val jMK where I feel understand the spacing and usage and am often correct in application.
As it stands, Val, Double, and Bella are characters I feel I know what I'm DOING with when I put buttons on the screen (or don't) or try to open people up.
Parasoul is not a character I feel that way about. Unfortunately, I do NOT like the three characters that I'm "good" with as a trio together..
Even if I like Para/Val/Bella and I think it works, I think Me/Para does not work unless I have some sort of epiphany. I hate this conclusion.
- Val, Double, and Bella in any order causes me to have synergy issues that I'm not a fan of living with because of what I want in my team.
I've become a huge fan of Val/Excellabella over Val/HLnL these days and I like the third character to utilize it. I don't personally feel Double/Excella even if sage does!
I also can't STAND Double/HBypass. I don't like the way it feels at all and I'm not changing from HBypass. Bella/HBypass is something I love as much as Val/Excella.
Also, I've found that I adore Double/LPinion and that Painwheel is a character I feel that I'm grasping very quickly. I also like Painwheel/Cilia Slide a LOT.
With Painwheel being a potential fourth character in the mix, I've come to a few decisions..
- I feel very comfortable with Val and Bella, but I want it to be a trio.
Is Big Band "right" for me? Because he feels SO right on the Val+Bella team. LExtend glues this team together so well.
Am I cut out for this type of character? I also SUCK at parries, but that can be fixed..
I'm not sure I apply his tools in neutral right at all! I used to hate him. I used to hate his combos. Now I don't!
He's pretty fun! I just need to see if he's "right" for me... To define that for you..
Can I consistently open people up, not get pushblocked out, and make them respect me? That's what makes a character "right" for me is understanding how to do that.
- I feel very comfortable with Double and Painwheel, even if my Painwheel is still fresh, but I also want this to be a trio.
Beowulf seems promising for the Double/Painwheel team. HChair does a LOT for me on this team. I think I've seen Krackatoa play this team too.
Is Beowulf "right" for me, though? He's fun but I don't know if I make the right decisions in neutral or know what tools to use.
And what about Painwheel? I'm still VERY new with her. She is very fun! I think I understand her tools too. I'm half confident I get this character!
I think if I practice Painwheel more, she is "right" for me. But I don't know enough about Beowulf yet..
Beowulf is in the top 2 potential new characters. I have to have 2 though, since I need TWO new characters..
- Should I take another look at Headless Fortune or Peacock even though they feel overwhelming to master or awkward to synergize with?
I think they're ideal for what I want in characters but they are unforgiving when it comes to picking them up and making mistakes.
They both excel in applying crazy setups using tools like SOID and the head and I love that!
But I often die way too quickly. I don't quite get zoning or puppeting at all and the uphill grind is terrible.
Peacock offers me Charged SOID or LBomb. Those are the two assists I like. One of them is very questionable.
Fortune doesn't offer me any assists that I'm a huge fan of, though.
I don't know how to feel about these characters.
- Should I take another look at Squigly? I feel I have the same issue with her that I do with Parasoul. It's about effective pressure and neutral decisions, for the record!
I often want to run her with Excellabella. I think the synergy is great but then I'm stuck with finding someone else who utilizes that assist again.
On top of that, I don't feel any Squigly assists these days. I'm terrible at utilizing both DnB and cHP, and even Chord or Sing.
I'm gonna say I don't feel this character as strongly as I wish I did. She's on the lower end of the list. But let's put her on the page, yeah?
- I don't dislike or like Eliza and I'm not sure if I have potential with her or not. I want to keep her in mind while sorting out the teams mentioned above. Kinda boring.
I still like Spiral just because of the chip damage. I love axe in theory but I suck at applying it. Not a fan of anything else except.. Throw. Favorite throw assist. Seriously.
I tend to get results with her but I don't think it's because I'm good with her, rather, I think people let me get away with murder for no good reason.
Lower end of the list.. but not as bad as Squigly?
- I like Robo Fortune but I don't know where she fits or if I should play her. I understand her zoning better than Peacock, at least IMO. Very fun character!
HBeam and sHP are both promising assists, too. I'm also tempted by Salvo because I don't mind setting it up and trying to utilize the cHK hitbox for weird setups.
Oh, I get pushblocked out though. Sadness. But not as sad as other characters, since I don't mind just hanging back and firing off beams!
Higher on the list? With Big Band and Beowulf sitting at the top, mind you.
- I don't find playing Fukua fun very often but sometimes she offers nice things to my team. But I can't do the sort of shenanigans I like to do with that character.
She offers one of the only multihit lockdowns I like, which is HDrill. That thing solves all of my pushblocking issues and often gets me weird confirms.
She's.. so bland.. I'm afraid I can't be crazy enough with her on offense and it stunts me. She doesn't feel "right" for me in THAT sense. Too.. simple?
... I like Robo/HDrill, for the record. And seeing SonicFox play it made me happy.
Below Robo and Eliza but not Squigly..
- I find playing Filia very fun but I'm not sure she offers anything special to my team or that I understand how to utilize her effectively.
She's pretty low on the list of characters I'm considering even if I dislike other characters more. I LIKE Filia. I can hit people with her when I'm up close.
Still.. I don't feel it. Filia/HBrass is the thing I would want to run, honestly. I want to get happy birthdays and make assists bleed.
Down at the bottom with Squigly.. above her though. But Below Fukua.
- We already mentioned Big Band but this is worth mentioning.
I started playing him again to try and make an HBrass team because I think that having a team with HBrass is something I should do.
An HBrass team has the potential to be a strong counterpick versus various other teams and let me run a TRAIN over people who call assists badly.
... but I ended up finding out how amazing LExtend is for Val/Bella and running with that instead.
Currently at the top of the list for potential characters alongside Beowulf.
- SonicFox got onto me for not killing and he was right. I got greedy and wanted to conserve meter because I felt overwhelmed and thought I'd need it for later.
I already know the answer to this, before and after doing it, so why did I do what I did? I constantly kill when I have the meter, tell others to do it, etc.
Then I fought him and I second guessed something I believe isn't second guessable.. And I lost for it!
I also got stressed by factors (Discord issues) outside the match and that wasn't good. Protip to self: if outside things are stress factors then DEAL WITH THEM, then go back to playing!
All in all, there's a shitload of stuff that sounds like 'ooh nooo character crisis still, gllt?' up there, but..
I don't feel like I'm actually having a character crisis from hell these days like I was for ages?
I'm so happy with Val/Bella/Double, even on separate teams, and am feeling complacent with understanding what I suck at in regards to Parasoul, that I'm not that STRESSED about any of this.
I don't MIND having a character or two I'm fresh with or don't know how to feel about yet because I have at least 1-2 characters on each team I'm SUPER comfortable with now!
And, again, I'm.. sorta past being stressed about not being able to play characters like Para successfully. I'm just playing BB, Beo, PW, etc. now and having a good time.. and more success.
Right now my actual ISSUE is NOT PLAYING ENOUGH MATCHES OFTEN ENOUGH WITH VERY STRONG PLAYERS and if I'm gonna keep yelling in my Dad's ear that I won't get mugged if I go to Combo Breaker then I need to back it up with actually getting good, so that if I can make it, I get out of pools at the least or make a strong showing even outside the tournament.
I also want to try my hand at commentary at some point.
Last tidbit, I should have backup duos for counterpick reasons. Bella and Double are my solo characters. Maybe even Val, if I feel cheeky!
I don't mind Val/Bella duo at ALL. Double/Painwheel duo is a bit fragile feeling for me, though, so I roll with Bella/Double instead.
If I can master either BB or Beo, or both, I will consider forming a duo from the above chars + one of them.. or both of them?
What counterpicks?
Squigly. Squigly/Copter.
I pick Val/HLnL vs this team. Always. A l w a y s. It's a promise.
So yeah, remind me to fight good players, record it (with permission), post it (with permission), and ASK FOR SPECIFIC CRITIQUE WITH MY ISSUES which will most likely be regarding pressure and optimal play in regards to the flow of resets and using tools in neutral situations or scrambles.
