Time to start a new training diary!

I think the old one has long since served it's purpose by now and needs to be archived, so I've asked @Midiman to handle that.
Also, all videos will be linked, not embedded, for courtesy reasons. (If I can figure out how to get the forum to not automatically embed my YouTube links..)

Here's the stuff I have in mind to discuss currently. ESSAY TIME.

- What do I do with Parasoul? I'm not sure I'll ever play her correctly or if she's "right" for me. I'm about ready to push her to the backburner for a while, or good.
I don't think I've ever figured out how to play her properly and I can't seem to wrap my head around it even now..
My pressure falls flat and making people respect me with her seems impossible no matter how much I think I understand what I should be doing.
Sometimes I'm very successful with her but more often than not all of my decisions feel like wild guesses rather than really knowing what I'm doing.
I throw out jLP with no confidence. It's not like Val jMK where I feel understand the spacing and usage and am often correct in application.
As it stands, Val, Double, and Bella are characters I feel I know what I'm DOING with when I put buttons on the screen (or don't) or try to open people up.
Parasoul is not a character I feel that way about. Unfortunately, I do NOT like the three characters that I'm "good" with as a trio together..
Even if I like Para/Val/Bella and I think it works, I think Me/Para does not work unless I have some sort of epiphany. I hate this conclusion.

- Val, Double, and Bella in any order causes me to have synergy issues that I'm not a fan of living with because of what I want in my team.
I've become a huge fan of Val/Excellabella over Val/HLnL these days and I like the third character to utilize it. I don't personally feel Double/Excella even if sage does!
I also can't STAND Double/HBypass. I don't like the way it feels at all and I'm not changing from HBypass. Bella/HBypass is something I love as much as Val/Excella.
Also, I've found that I adore Double/LPinion and that Painwheel is a character I feel that I'm grasping very quickly. I also like Painwheel/Cilia Slide a LOT.
With Painwheel being a potential fourth character in the mix, I've come to a few decisions..

- I feel very comfortable with Val and Bella, but I want it to be a trio.
Is Big Band "right" for me? Because he feels SO right on the Val+Bella team. LExtend glues this team together so well.
Am I cut out for this type of character? I also SUCK at parries, but that can be fixed..
I'm not sure I apply his tools in neutral right at all! I used to hate him. I used to hate his combos. Now I don't!
He's pretty fun! I just need to see if he's "right" for me... To define that for you..
Can I consistently open people up, not get pushblocked out, and make them respect me? That's what makes a character "right" for me is understanding how to do that.

- I feel very comfortable with Double and Painwheel, even if my Painwheel is still fresh, but I also want this to be a trio.
Beowulf seems promising for the Double/Painwheel team. HChair does a LOT for me on this team. I think I've seen Krackatoa play this team too.
Is Beowulf "right" for me, though? He's fun but I don't know if I make the right decisions in neutral or know what tools to use.
And what about Painwheel? I'm still VERY new with her. She is very fun! I think I understand her tools too. I'm half confident I get this character!
I think if I practice Painwheel more, she is "right" for me. But I don't know enough about Beowulf yet..
Beowulf is in the top 2 potential new characters. I have to have 2 though, since I need TWO new characters..

- Should I take another look at Headless Fortune or Peacock even though they feel overwhelming to master or awkward to synergize with?
I think they're ideal for what I want in characters but they are unforgiving when it comes to picking them up and making mistakes.
They both excel in applying crazy setups using tools like SOID and the head and I love that!
But I often die way too quickly. I don't quite get zoning or puppeting at all and the uphill grind is terrible.
Peacock offers me Charged SOID or LBomb. Those are the two assists I like. One of them is very questionable.
Fortune doesn't offer me any assists that I'm a huge fan of, though.
I don't know how to feel about these characters.

- Should I take another look at Squigly? I feel I have the same issue with her that I do with Parasoul. It's about effective pressure and neutral decisions, for the record!
I often want to run her with Excellabella. I think the synergy is great but then I'm stuck with finding someone else who utilizes that assist again.
On top of that, I don't feel any Squigly assists these days. I'm terrible at utilizing both DnB and cHP, and even Chord or Sing.
I'm gonna say I don't feel this character as strongly as I wish I did. She's on the lower end of the list. But let's put her on the page, yeah?

- I don't dislike or like Eliza and I'm not sure if I have potential with her or not. I want to keep her in mind while sorting out the teams mentioned above. Kinda boring.
I still like Spiral just because of the chip damage. I love axe in theory but I suck at applying it. Not a fan of anything else except.. Throw. Favorite throw assist. Seriously.
I tend to get results with her but I don't think it's because I'm good with her, rather, I think people let me get away with murder for no good reason.
Lower end of the list.. but not as bad as Squigly?

- I like Robo Fortune but I don't know where she fits or if I should play her. I understand her zoning better than Peacock, at least IMO. Very fun character!
HBeam and sHP are both promising assists, too. I'm also tempted by Salvo because I don't mind setting it up and trying to utilize the cHK hitbox for weird setups.
Oh, I get pushblocked out though. Sadness. But not as sad as other characters, since I don't mind just hanging back and firing off beams!
Higher on the list? With Big Band and Beowulf sitting at the top, mind you.

- I don't find playing Fukua fun very often but sometimes she offers nice things to my team. But I can't do the sort of shenanigans I like to do with that character.
She offers one of the only multihit lockdowns I like, which is HDrill. That thing solves all of my pushblocking issues and often gets me weird confirms.
She's.. so bland.. I'm afraid I can't be crazy enough with her on offense and it stunts me. She doesn't feel "right" for me in THAT sense. Too.. simple?
... I like Robo/HDrill, for the record. And seeing SonicFox play it made me happy.
Below Robo and Eliza but not Squigly..

- I find playing Filia very fun but I'm not sure she offers anything special to my team or that I understand how to utilize her effectively.
She's pretty low on the list of characters I'm considering even if I dislike other characters more. I LIKE Filia. I can hit people with her when I'm up close.
Still.. I don't feel it. Filia/HBrass is the thing I would want to run, honestly. I want to get happy birthdays and make assists bleed.
Down at the bottom with Squigly.. above her though. But Below Fukua.

- We already mentioned Big Band but this is worth mentioning.
I started playing him again to try and make an HBrass team because I think that having a team with HBrass is something I should do.
An HBrass team has the potential to be a strong counterpick versus various other teams and let me run a TRAIN over people who call assists badly.
... but I ended up finding out how amazing LExtend is for Val/Bella and running with that instead.
Currently at the top of the list for potential characters alongside Beowulf.

- SonicFox got onto me for not killing and he was right. I got greedy and wanted to conserve meter because I felt overwhelmed and thought I'd need it for later.
I already know the answer to this, before and after doing it, so why did I do what I did? I constantly kill when I have the meter, tell others to do it, etc.
Then I fought him and I second guessed something I believe isn't second guessable.. And I lost for it!
I also got stressed by factors (Discord issues) outside the match and that wasn't good. Protip to self: if outside things are stress factors then DEAL WITH THEM, then go back to playing!

All in all, there's a shitload of stuff that sounds like 'ooh nooo character crisis still, gllt?' up there, but..
I don't feel like I'm actually having a character crisis from hell these days like I was for ages?
I'm so happy with Val/Bella/Double, even on separate teams, and am feeling complacent with understanding what I suck at in regards to Parasoul, that I'm not that STRESSED about any of this.
I don't MIND having a character or two I'm fresh with or don't know how to feel about yet because I have at least 1-2 characters on each team I'm SUPER comfortable with now!
And, again, I'm.. sorta past being stressed about not being able to play characters like Para successfully. I'm just playing BB, Beo, PW, etc. now and having a good time.. and more success.

Right now my actual ISSUE is NOT PLAYING ENOUGH MATCHES OFTEN ENOUGH WITH VERY STRONG PLAYERS and if I'm gonna keep yelling in my Dad's ear that I won't get mugged if I go to Combo Breaker then I need to back it up with actually getting good, so that if I can make it, I get out of pools at the least or make a strong showing even outside the tournament.

I also want to try my hand at commentary at some point.

Last tidbit, I should have backup duos for counterpick reasons. Bella and Double are my solo characters. Maybe even Val, if I feel cheeky!
I don't mind Val/Bella duo at ALL. Double/Painwheel duo is a bit fragile feeling for me, though, so I roll with Bella/Double instead.
If I can master either BB or Beo, or both, I will consider forming a duo from the above chars + one of them.. or both of them?

What counterpicks?
Squigly. Squigly/Copter.
I pick Val/HLnL vs this team. Always. A l w a y s. It's a promise.

So yeah, remind me to fight good players, record it (with permission), post it (with permission), and ASK FOR SPECIFIC CRITIQUE WITH MY ISSUES which will most likely be regarding pressure and optimal play in regards to the flow of resets and using tools in neutral situations or scrambles.

If I can figure out how to get the forum to not automatically embed my YouTube links..
Write text, highlight text, click the link button, paste link to Youtube video into box, say OK.

Disagree. Learn to play your mains vs whatever you consider bad matchups, instead. In a 2/3 set you WILL end up doing that sometimes, it's better to be able to win those.

A) I thought I did that once and it circumvented my efforts and embedded me anyways, but I'll try again! Thanks!
B) Point taken! Thanks again.

Talked to Bonanze and decided it's time for a much longer break than the week-ish break I planned on. I'm burnt out!
Won't be playing or labbing for quite a while I think.. but I might try my hand at something else SG related during my break..?!

Inconvenient timing, but that's life! I have things I need to sort out. Sorry, that means no majors this year, y'know?

Played a set with Mike, with permission I may put up some footage later, until then, here's post-set discussion/tips! Thank you SO much @Mike_Z

12:38 AM - gllt: Feel like playing?
12:39 AM - Mike Z: ~10m
12:39 AM - gllt: alright!
1:13 AM - Mike Z is now Online.
1:14 AM - Mike Z: and by that I clearly meant, more like now

1:15 AM - gllt: Sure! I'll get the lobby ready
1:19 AM - gllt: good luck, have fun!

1:20 AM - Mike Z: it's oldddddd
1:33 AM - Mike Z is now Online.
1:33 AM - Mike Z: I thought you would be like....better....
1:33 AM - gllt: I'll take that as a compliment! I need to improve a lot, I know.
1:33 AM - gllt: So I'll take any advice (I at least see where I'm flubbing, FWIW)
1:33 AM - Mike Z: I'll give that at the end.
1:33 AM - Mike Z: Time to be mean now! :^)
1:34 AM - gllt: Awesome!
1:34 AM - gllt: https://steamcommunity-a.akamaihd.net/economy/emoticon/ggxxacsol
1:37 AM - Mike Z: You still suck. (^.^)
1:37 AM - gllt: https://steamcommunity-a.akamaihd.net/economy/emoticon/doge
1:38 AM - Mike Z: I was not kidding....
1:39 AM - gllt: I realize!
1:39 AM - gllt: I can still send you cute emotes
1:38 AM - Mike Z: True!
1:38 AM - Mike Z: ones I don't have ;_;
1:40 AM - Mike Z: Don't wait for it, it's not worth waiting for.
1:41 AM - gllt: Hmm, alright
1:41 AM - Mike Z: Addicting yes, but not worth waiting for.
1:46 AM - Mike Z: Hi!
1:46 AM - gllt: hi! i like that cancel
1:46 AM - Mike Z: Look at all that effort when you could have just done c.HP Super
1:47 AM - gllt: I'll take a look at what you mean when I review this later!
1:46 AM - Mike Z: I mean, you did that whole combo....why bother?
1:53 AM - Mike Z is now Online.
1:52 AM - Mike Z: :^(
1:53 AM - gllt: I had a bad idea half way through
1:53 AM - Mike Z: NO IDEAS
1:53 AM - gllt: More often than not, thats my problem
1:53 AM - Mike Z: BASIC SHIT
1:53 AM - gllt: YEAH
1:57 AM - Mike Z: Why would you do
1:57 AM - Mike Z: ANY
1:57 AM - Mike Z: of that?
1:58 AM - gllt: That's a really great question! I'll try and answer it at some point
1:57 AM - Mike Z: I mean without any other critiques you don't kill me!
1:58 AM - Mike Z: Like I can count on you to let me live at least once, if not twice.
1:58 AM - gllt: I'll make sure to pay more attention to my meter and when I can kill
1:58 AM - Mike Z: Good, that's first!
2:01 AM - gllt: I did it again with val, I noticed
2:01 AM - gllt: short combo into diamonds though
2:01 AM - gllt: whee
2:08 AM - Mike Z is now Online.
2:08 AM - Mike Z: That was really not good.
2:08 AM - gllt: It sure wasn't!
2:10 AM - Mike Z: see like
2:10 AM - Mike Z: that was 2 supers dead
2:10 AM - Mike Z: You do complicated things OFTEN, and you drop them nearly as often.
2:11 AM - Mike Z: I know you like that stuff, but if you are tryna win, leave it for videos.
2:11 AM - gllt: I didn't know how to kill there, honestly. I'll have to find out what to do from that situation (which I should already know since it's DP, whoops.)
2:11 AM - gllt: Mhmm, alright
2:11 AM - Mike Z: There?
2:11 AM - gllt: From DP
2:11 AM - gllt: I realized the route I chose was bad too from the minute I did it
2:11 AM - gllt: starting with jLK from shaking DP
2:11 AM - Mike Z: Seriously? That was no shake regular c.MK->s.HP j.MP HP HK OTG c.LK blah jump combo c.LP jump combo j.HP A Train SSJ
2:11 AM - Mike Z: Dynamo
2:11 AM - Mike Z: done
2:12 AM - gllt: Alright, noted
2:11 AM - Mike Z: here look
2:12 AM - Mike Z: bleh
2:12 AM - gllt: but yeah that route
2:12 AM - Mike Z: so the deal is
2:12 AM - Mike Z: BASICALLY IMPOSSIBLE to drop
2:13 AM - gllt: right, yeah thats easy peasy
2:12 AM - Mike Z: except for that first one :^P
2:13 AM - Mike Z: does 7.something
2:13 AM - Mike Z: and ends in Dynamo DHC for 9.7 or something
2:13 AM - gllt: i'll make sure I know what to do in that situation now then! it'll take some practice to get myself to do it but it's not hard to do so that's not an issue
2:13 AM - Mike Z: Complicated things are useful when you NEED them
2:13 AM - Mike Z: but you do them when you DON'T
2:13 AM - Mike Z: like also?
2:14 AM - gllt: Mmh yeah, I should go sort all of what I know into practical and not practical
2:14 AM - Mike Z: THAT
2:14 AM - Mike Z: is like 6.something
2:14 AM - Mike Z: if all you need is that, DON'T DO ANYTHING ELSE
2:14 AM - gllt: Right, the combo I tell most people picking him up to start with, haha. I admit, I don't really understand damage scaling so well when I'm in a match or what can kill when it can kill
2:14 AM - gllt: I need to figure that out
2:14 AM - Mike Z: not necessarily scaling but just
2:14 AM - Mike Z: this thing does X %
2:14 AM - Mike Z: like from here?
2:15 AM - gllt: Alright
2:15 AM - Mike Z: You don't even need to know at the beginning of the lifebar
2:15 AM - Mike Z: just go in training and look at 20% 30% 40% what kills
2:15 AM - gllt: Oh alright, that's a really good way of looking at it
2:15 AM - gllt: I can look in chunks of 10% easy
2:15 AM - gllt: Thanks!
2:15 AM - Mike Z: NP
2:15 AM - Mike Z: there's more later
2:15 AM - Mike Z: but I weep when I live :^|
2:18 AM - gllt: best drop.
2:17 AM - Mike Z: .......
2:17 AM - Mike Z: well
2:18 AM - gllt: yeah.
2:17 AM - Mike Z: it's
2:17 AM - Mike Z: a
2:17 AM - Mike Z: start
2:18 AM - gllt: its a
2:18 AM - gllt: train
2:18 AM - Mike Z: 10/10
2:18 AM - gllt: that didn't happen
2:18 AM - Mike Z: keep corner
2:20 AM - gllt: noted, i'll learn the timing
2:19 AM - Mike Z: There was no reason not to
2:19 AM - Mike Z: yeh
2:23 AM - Mike Z: You lost that.
2:23 AM - Mike Z: AGAIN
2:24 AM - gllt: I'm actually trying to think of exactly what, which makes me sad. I like being aware of what went wrong (I'm aware things went wrong)
2:24 AM - Mike Z: No reason to Kanchou.
2:24 AM - Mike Z: Dynamo Lv3
2:24 AM - gllt: ahh yeah
2:25 AM - Mike Z: better
2:26 AM - Mike Z: I'm gonna stop letting you hit me though :^P
2:26 AM - gllt: Good!
2:26 AM - gllt: I wanna work harder
2:26 AM - Mike Z: But you at least DHCd
2:27 AM - Mike Z: Oops?
2:27 AM - Mike Z: Yeah, oops. I dunno why that didn't combo.
2:28 AM - gllt: I was, for whatever reason, while deeply contemplating my death, still holding 1 instead of 3
2:27 AM - Mike Z: mashing 236PP you mean!
2:28 AM - Mike Z: GOOD
2:30 AM - Mike Z: missed it as OTG :^(
2:30 AM - gllt: such is life
2:32 AM - Mike Z: ?
2:33 AM - gllt: I get too antsy, I'm trying to work on that
2:33 AM - gllt: I do stupid shit when I get antsy
2:32 AM - Mike Z: random battle butt is the thing I did for 3 years to let other people win
2:33 AM - gllt: Very stupid shit
2:32 AM - Mike Z: :^P
2:33 AM - Mike Z: because PR
2:33 AM - gllt: I still remember playing fenster and you leaving the stream
2:33 AM - gllt: because I got panicky and did car
2:33 AM - gllt: from fullscreen
2:34 AM - Mike Z: Don't do stupid shit like that
2:35 AM - gllt: The things we discussed or something in particular just now
2:35 AM - Mike Z: If there's no reason for the other person to take a risk, there's no reason to do something that ONLY WORKS when you take a risk.
2:35 AM - gllt: (Both obviously)
2:35 AM - gllt: Right
2:35 AM - Mike Z: Something or other you did in that match after Cerebella died
2:35 AM - gllt: Okay
2:35 AM - Mike Z: also that starter is really neat, with Val
2:35 AM - gllt: Thanks! I'm not super confident in it yet but I'm practicing it
2:35 AM - gllt: It's useful for getting something off Brass midscreen
2:35 AM - Mike Z: fullscreen confirm with Brass is yeeahahhhh
2:37 AM - Mike Z: Oh right, that was another one
2:37 AM - gllt: yeah the pummel horse was dumb
2:37 AM - Mike Z: Cymbals -> A Train or Brass, instead of always trying to convert.
2:37 AM - gllt: oh alright
2:37 AM - Mike Z: that too, but I was ignoring that
2:38 AM - gllt: sliding KD every time I get cymbals
2:38 AM - gllt: yeah I get too greedy there from having done it before
2:37 AM - Mike Z: Guaranteed > semi-possible.
2:37 AM - Mike Z: Not sliding, just REAL DAMAGE.
2:40 AM - Mike Z: could have been SSJ
2:44 AM - gllt: thats a wild DHC
2:44 AM - Mike Z: It's usually a mistake
2:44 AM - Mike Z: untaunted SSJ works
2:44 AM - Mike Z: Lv3 works
2:44 AM - Mike Z: I just forget :^P
2:45 AM - gllt: Understandable!
2:44 AM - Mike Z: also, I'm pretty sure you'd add a bunch of damage to your Val combo if you used Brass earlier in it
2:45 AM - gllt: I would, I'm afraid of it falling into the 'I'll drop this and look like a fool' category
2:45 AM - gllt: So I haven't been doing it
2:45 AM - Mike Z: nah I mean
2:45 AM - Mike Z: like s.HP -> HK Bypass + Brass
2:46 AM - Mike Z: mistake
2:47 AM - gllt: they happen!
2:47 AM - gllt: I figured as much
2:50 AM - Mike Z: Good.
2:56 AM - Mike Z is now Online.
2:56 AM - Mike Z: Don't need to keep corner if I won't die
2:59 AM - gllt: critical mistakes were made
2:59 AM - Mike Z: ok, that's 30, one more
2:59 AM - gllt: alright!
3:01 AM - gllt: I suppose I could have tried parrying that SSJ
3:01 AM - Mike Z: OK so
3:01 AM - Mike Z: things
3:02 AM - gllt: Alright, here we go
3:01 AM - Mike Z: Numero Uno
3:01 AM - Mike Z: you upback when you don't know what to do
3:01 AM - Mike Z: or upforward, I dunno
3:02 AM - gllt: Yeah, I jump a lot
3:02 AM - Mike Z: either way, I basically never thought about it beyond "time to reset low now"
3:02 AM - gllt: For that reason exactly, I dunno what to do
3:02 AM - Mike Z: well yeah I know WHY
3:02 AM - Mike Z: but the deal is it's predictable
3:02 AM - gllt: Right
3:02 AM - Mike Z: so work on throwing in some not-that
3:02 AM - Mike Z: assume you're getting hit anyway, and pick another option why not
3:03 AM - gllt: Okay, even if I don't know what to do, choose to do something that isn't jump when I don't know what to do
3:02 AM - Mike Z: yes
3:03 AM - gllt: Yeah, understood
3:02 AM - Mike Z: when it occurs to you to do so
3:03 AM - Mike Z: You lost Val in probably over half of those games because I was like "ok small thing into low reset"
3:03 AM - Mike Z: and my low reset is 10.5
3:03 AM - Mike Z: easy too ;^)
3:04 AM - gllt: Yep, I noticed that, I either got to play her or I didn't
3:04 AM - gllt: If I had defense, at least I would've had more opportunities in neutral
3:03 AM - Mike Z: but it's not that you didn't, it's that you always didn't for the SAME REASON
3:04 AM - Mike Z: yeah
3:04 AM - Mike Z: ok secondly
3:04 AM - Mike Z: You generally don't mash super, which is good, but you do need to remember it's a tool you have.
3:05 AM - Mike Z: like
3:05 AM - gllt: Ohh yeah. Lovely how I went from mashing a lot to not really mashing to trying to time them and now every day I say WOW I SHOULD'VE JUST MASHED. I'll try to push it more when I'm aware it's a thing I can do, noted
3:05 AM - gllt: Yeah I saw some times I could just.. EKG or Dynamo
3:05 AM - Mike Z: not mash
3:05 AM - Mike Z: the way I explain it is
3:05 AM - Mike Z: from a grappler/gimmick player perspective
3:05 AM - Mike Z: you gotta put the fear of God into 'em
3:05 AM - Mike Z: there are times when it is okay to take a hit, in order to remind your opponent that you ARE WILLING TO DO THE STUPID THING
3:06 AM - gllt: Right, you were comfortable with knowing I was GOING to block
3:06 AM - Mike Z: Just so they have to consider you DOING the stupid thing at all times.
3:06 AM - Mike Z: yeah.
3:07 AM - gllt: Alright, I'll keep in mind to just go for a reversal sometimes instead of always trying to block. I did once but once is really disproportionate to the many attempts I had when it could have worked.
3:07 AM - Mike Z: I generally do really obvious kanchous early on because they let me do lows later which lets me do kanchous later.
3:07 AM - Mike Z: It's not about it working, though, is the thing.
3:07 AM - gllt: Right, just letting you know 'Yes, I will EKG'
3:07 AM - Mike Z: It's about doing it at all.
3:07 AM - Mike Z: yes
3:07 AM - Mike Z: like, you are Val. You have a REALLY GOOD reversal super
3:07 AM - Mike Z: and if you have 2 bars it's a full conversion
3:07 AM - Mike Z: you did that exactly one time.
3:08 AM - gllt: yeah, I get ekg > dynamo > fHP+Bypass
3:08 AM - gllt: something i really like about this order
3:08 AM - Mike Z: it's fine if you don't do it so that your opponent decides you're not gonna do it and then you can when you need to, but you just didn't do it period.
3:09 AM - gllt: Yeah, which means you can do a lot of things because you're not having to pick between baiting out my reversal and just doing the things
3:09 AM - gllt: Because I never gave you the idea that I would reversal
3:09 AM - gllt: It makes sense
3:09 AM - Mike Z: And then third is, put away your video brain and go learn some easy things that do decent damage, to do when you know they will kill.
3:10 AM - gllt: Part of me knows those things and part of me just autopilots into random stuff during matches instead of practical things. I'll go repractice practical stuff, including situational things like my combo off big band DP, and make sure to default to those things in matches until they're natural to me
3:10 AM - Mike Z: Damage scaling in SG and MvC2 is such that a basic combo into super does about as much as an optimized combo into super if you spend the same resources.
3:11 AM - gllt: Right
3:11 AM - gllt: I also tend to have good DHCs in terms of damage
3:11 AM - gllt: considering I'm either going into bella or band
3:11 AM - Mike Z: Yeah. actually #4 is, burn into your head how much damage DHC Lv3 does with Band
3:12 AM - gllt: I've never done the 10% increments of health thing before in training mode to get an idea visually of what those chunks of damage look like and what I can do
3:12 AM - gllt: I'll try to get an idea of how much stuff like cLK cMK cHP HBrass SSJ Dynamo etc does
3:12 AM - Mike Z: 5th is, you tend to poke with c.LK a few times in a row, which won't work much. But the point I want to make is, if you HIT with that first c.LK you won't get a combo because you aren't continuing.
3:13 AM - Mike Z: poke with strings, not single hits.
3:13 AM - gllt: Alright, can I ask when, if ever, its appropriate to poke with single hits, or is it just a flat 'no don't do that' sort of thing
3:14 AM - gllt: FWIW I only ever started doing that because I got pushblocked out a lot and it caught people, so I want to understand what I should do to resolve that situation if that's not it, but I can see how it just flubbed me getting a hit on you in our set
3:14 AM - gllt: (I realize black and white is not the matter of things like this)
3:14 AM - Mike Z: I mean the best answer to that is 'sometimes, to bait pushblocks' but in general like, it's a feel thing. You just do it a lot.
3:14 AM - gllt: Okay, tone it down a good bit, I can see that
3:14 AM - Mike Z: yeh
3:14 AM - Mike Z: there are things like Val c.LK->c.MK that's safe if pushblocked, same with CE c.LK->c.MP
3:14 AM - Mike Z: and those are confirmable
3:14 AM - Mike Z: like
3:15 AM - Mike Z: when I talk to Filia players it's about, if you are going to do c.LK IAD LK then you are NOT WAITING to confirm off the c.LK, if it hits oh well, you WANT to already be doing the next thing, because if you can confirm it was blocked then so can they.
3:15 AM - Mike Z: Same deal with this, if you are going to poke with a single hit vary it up some. c.LK throw, c.LK airthrow, c.LK Step, etc
3:16 AM - gllt: Alright, that makes sense too
3:16 AM - Mike Z: two more
3:16 AM - gllt: Okay!
3:16 AM - Mike Z: I look at my meter a lot, I rarely look at my lifebar. Your Val combos end with full thing that gives me ridiculous meter. That's not always a good idea. And don't wait for lv5 - if you practice it at neutral then use it as a tool, otherwise if you have the opportunity to super, SUPER.
3:17 AM - Mike Z: and don't do random syringe toss, there's no reason for that
3:17 AM - Mike Z: that's all one point :^P
3:17 AM - gllt: I'll look into combos that don't give the opponent as much meter with Val
3:17 AM - Mike Z: Basically, you take a lot of unnecessary risks.
3:17 AM - gllt: I can do that with frontloaded brass for sure
3:17 AM - Mike Z: Risks are fine, but there's no reason to throw away hard-earned vials
3:18 AM - gllt: Understood. I'll work on actually using my vials more in practical situations rather than tossing them in neutral where they aren't very effective in the cases that I'm doing it
3:18 AM - Mike Z: even like, s.LK->c.MK(1)->s.HP does only like 400 less than s.LK s.MP all 2nd all s.MK all s.HKx3
3:18 AM - Mike Z: oh and, go learn a carry - snap combo with val
3:19 AM - gllt: Yeah, I remember your post on meter scaling, I'll keep that in mind
3:19 AM - gllt: Alright, I can do that too
3:18 AM - Mike Z: a disparate-weights-and-sizes one
3:19 AM - gllt: Right, I'll check it on multiple combinations
3:19 AM - Mike Z: cuz you would have gotten at least 3-4 double snaps that you didn't get because CE dropped out
3:19 AM - Mike Z: that's an easy thing to fix
3:19 AM - Mike Z: the last thing, which is a combination of all the others, is that you're not very scary.
3:19 AM - gllt: I still cried when I got bella/band to the corner, did jLP jMK2 because its consistent, it hit them both, LBypass, oh wow bella has left the corner. I have to fix that.
3:19 AM - Mike Z: I didn't mind getting hit by you, because I just looked at as gaining some meter and not dying.
3:20 AM - gllt: That reminds me of what I told Osiris (who is quite a bit below me in terms of play still)
3:20 AM - gllt: I'm never scared to take risks because getting hit by his Fukua or Eliza just..
3:20 AM - gllt: isn't scary
3:20 AM - Mike Z: Must be nice, talking down to a god.
3:20 AM - gllt: Hahahaha
3:20 AM - gllt: He's a nervous God
3:21 AM - gllt: Alright, I need to be more effective when I get a hit
3:20 AM - Mike Z: but yeah, same deal. You do things that are a lot of hits, which translates to a LOT of meter for me, and at the end either drop or I don't die.
3:21 AM - Mike Z: plus, you barely ever reset early, so each time I got hit I could take a breath and look at gauges and like, wait for the next thing.
3:21 AM - gllt: Between poison and brass I shouldn't be letting you live or get so much meter with Val
3:21 AM - Mike Z: You wanna keep 'em on their TOES
3:22 AM - gllt: Hmm, alright. I do feel like I lost that. When I played Val/HLnL, it was a constant slew of early resets into death. I could do the same with Brass, at least enough to keep you from having time to think about the next thing coming
3:22 AM - Mike Z: well as a practical example
3:22 AM - Mike Z: I waited the ENTIRE SET for you to do Excella s.LP delayed c.MK
3:22 AM - Mike Z: with Val
3:22 AM - Mike Z: and it never happened
3:23 AM - gllt: I actually have never looked it any of that because I didn't know it was a thing. Offensive concepts still evade me because I'm new at learning all of this. I guess this is something SP does?
3:24 AM - gllt: I realize I have no idea how to use Excellabella outside combos, bar using it to catch my opponent trying to jump over brass at round start the other day.. I forget who it was though.
3:23 AM - Mike Z: No, it's something I do lots
3:24 AM - gllt: I mean it makes sense, looking at it
3:24 AM - Mike Z: I can show you, here
3:24 AM - gllt: lobby is still open or i can bust open a training one
3:24 AM - Mike Z: I'll have to do it with Filia cuz I don't play Val
3:25 AM - gllt: okay!
3:24 AM - Mike Z: but the concept is the same
3:26 AM - gllt: Right, I've done that from assists before
3:26 AM - Mike Z: I mean, I suck but you get the idea
3:26 AM - gllt: Yep!
3:26 AM - gllt: I can do that
3:26 AM - gllt: And so I will
3:26 AM - Mike Z: any time it looks like there is a giant hit, quickly resetting
3:26 AM - Mike Z: oh, a better example
3:26 AM - Mike Z: involves differnt chars
3:28 AM - Mike Z: eh
3:28 AM - Mike Z: I'm bad at this one :^P
3:28 AM - gllt: I see how its the same though
3:28 AM - Mike Z: you can also do it with Brass
3:28 AM - gllt: I did this with Val/HLnL a lot, i just need to apply it to brass now
3:28 AM - Mike Z: like Brass + H Bypass, s.LP, c.MK or throw
3:28 AM - Mike Z: yeah\
3:29 AM - gllt: val/hlnl was sHP HLnL HBypass then either jab > low/throw or jLP same side HP/crossup HP/whatever else
3:28 AM - Mike Z: anyway, yeah, that
3:28 AM - Mike Z: yeah
3:29 AM - gllt: alright! I'll learn that with my assists
3:29 AM - Mike Z: don't give the other person time to think
3:29 AM - Mike Z: also FFS if you're gonna play Band, do the s.HP resets
3:29 AM - gllt: I'll learn them!
3:29 AM - Mike Z: like
3:29 AM - Mike Z: that's ACTUALLy a 50/50
3:29 AM - Mike Z: so use it
3:30 AM - gllt: right, because of hitstop (if i understand what is happening)
3:30 AM - Mike Z: and j.MK
3:30 AM - gllt: does that work if I'm crouching
3:30 AM - gllt: the confirm with timpani
3:30 AM - Mike Z: yep
3:30 AM - gllt: Ok! Didn't know that one
3:30 AM - Mike Z: SUUUPER easy
3:30 AM - Mike Z: okay, maybe not with back jump on Parasoul
3:31 AM - Mike Z: but yeah
3:31 AM - gllt: ok!
3:31 AM - gllt: Thats very useful
3:31 AM - Mike Z: it's great
3:32 AM - Mike Z: like if you're gonna play Band, be serious with him
3:33 AM - gllt: I want to actually play Band rather than 'oh he's there for the assist'
3:33 AM - gllt: Mostly because I like him now
3:33 AM - Mike Z: well, that wraps it until those are no longer relevant pieces of advice :^)
3:33 AM - gllt: Ok!
3:34 AM - gllt: There's a question I'd like to ask. When I'm trying to focus on a character on my team that I'm less good with
3:34 AM - gllt: but that character in my anchor
3:34 AM - gllt: so, band!
3:34 AM - gllt: In casuals, just.. play my team, or, play a different order?
3:34 AM - gllt: in = is
3:34 AM - gllt: Good fingers
3:34 AM - Mike Z: if you want to improve with a character, play them solo, or start them
3:34 AM - Mike Z: OR
3:34 AM - Mike Z: tag them in when you're gonna die with someone else!
3:35 AM - gllt: Right, which Val and Bella can both do easy
3:34 AM - Mike Z: no
3:34 AM - Mike Z: I mean just TAG them in
3:34 AM - Mike Z: take the hits
3:35 AM - gllt: Oh, hm
3:35 AM - gllt: Alright
3:34 AM - Mike Z: that better simulates incoming
3:35 AM - gllt: Alright, I'll try all those things situationally then. I'll give tagging a shot when I'm playing my team proper and try him solo/out of order in casuals for practice
3:35 AM - Mike Z: but if you want to improve with Band, I would point him in the order you get with 2 DHCs
3:35 AM - Mike Z: So I guess BB VA CE
3:36 AM - gllt: Alright, I can do that
3:36 AM - Mike Z: oh god gllt
3:36 AM - Mike Z: you have Bypass and Band
3:36 AM - gllt: Yeah!
3:36 AM - Mike Z: you REALLY
3:36 AM - Mike Z: REALLY
3:36 AM - Mike Z: REALLY REALLY
3:36 AM - Mike Z: need to remember that either alpha counters or random supers get you a full combo
3:37 AM - gllt: In what situation exactly? I was with you until the full combos, can big band pick up off post SSJ with HBypass? I couldn't figure out a way to make that work
3:37 AM - Mike Z: srsly?
3:37 AM - gllt: All I know is calling her there for extra damage before another SSJ
3:37 AM - gllt: Yeah seriously, I'm not sure how that works. I know how to pick up off HStep from fullscreen
3:37 AM - Mike Z: start a training lobby
3:37 AM - gllt: Alright
3:37 AM - Mike Z: well um
3:37 AM - Mike Z: if you know how to pick off HStep then you know how to pick off SSJ
3:37 AM - Mike Z: ::gives you a look::
3:38 AM - gllt: Not so?
3:38 AM - gllt: HStep knocks them forward, otg MBrass+HBypass > things
3:38 AM - gllt: SSJ you do otg HStep+HBypass > ????
3:38 AM - Mike Z: I'm pretty sure you can
3:38 AM - Mike Z: one sec
3:38 AM - gllt: np
3:39 AM - Mike Z: oh right
3:39 AM - gllt: yeeah, sadness, still, that hbypass adds a nice little like
3:40 AM - gllt: chunk of damage between the SSJs
3:40 AM - Mike Z: I'm PRETTY sure you can get something THERE
3:40 AM - gllt: I'll look into it anyways, I see what might be possible
3:41 AM - Mike Z: it helps if you tech
3:42 AM - gllt: you do it so hbypass hits otg in this case
3:42 AM - gllt: or rather
3:42 AM - gllt: mbrass does
3:42 AM - gllt: and hbypass picks up off it
3:42 AM - Mike Z: wow
3:42 AM - gllt: i did h
3:42 AM - gllt: im a king
3:42 AM - Mike Z: yeah but that's not this
3:42 AM - gllt: ok!
3:42 AM - Mike Z: oh also GO LEARN
3:43 AM - gllt: right, i can do that
3:42 AM - Mike Z: cuz that's like whoa
3:43 AM - Mike Z: ok
3:43 AM - gllt: was that MBrass or L
3:43 AM - Mike Z: H
3:43 AM - gllt: ok!
3:43 AM - Mike Z: wow that really suckas
3:44 AM - Mike Z: hmph
3:44 AM - Mike Z: I give.
3:44 AM - Mike Z: bypass is terrible :^P
3:45 AM - gllt: I'll still look, you tried things I didn't think of
3:45 AM - gllt: It's greaterrible!
3:45 AM - gllt: Terrigreat
3:44 AM - Mike Z: It seems like M Brass SHOULD hit there
3:45 AM - gllt: Maybe something else can be done
3:45 AM - Mike Z: oh well
3:45 AM - Mike Z: it's way bedtime for me
3:45 AM - gllt: Thanks for trying! (And everything else)
3:45 AM - Mike Z: sure
3:45 AM - gllt: Ok! Rest well and have a good day tomorrow
3:45 AM - Mike Z: You just gotta have that WIN mindset
3:46 AM - gllt: i'm gonna throw all this in my training diary unless you say NO then I won't (i might do it anyways)
3:46 AM - gllt: Win mindset it is
3:45 AM - Mike Z: sure, you can
3:46 AM - gllt: Or windex mindset, for cleaner thoughts
3:46 AM - Mike Z: and remember, if you don't remember anything else
3:46 AM - gllt: Midiman just said 'big butts' into my ears via his mic
3:46 AM - Mike Z: BASIC
3:46 AM - Mike Z: COMBOS
3:46 AM - gllt: and left
3:46 AM - gllt: okay! basic/practical
3:46 AM - gllt: Time to practice a lot of things
3:46 AM - Mike Z: keep in mind the oppoenent metergain
3:46 AM - Mike Z: I mean yes, Band j.MK loops do like....800-1200 more damage than other stuff
3:47 AM - Mike Z: but they also give you an ENTIRE BAR
3:47 AM - gllt: But they give the opponent ridiculous meter
3:47 AM - gllt: Yeah
3:47 AM - Mike Z: also, the gimmick player's handbook first page:
3:47 AM - gllt: Especially considering that with big band I also have assisted combos that frontload damage so that I don't have to do those
3:47 AM - Mike Z: if there's something you screw up a lot, turn it into an intentional reset/setup, that looks like a screwup
3:47 AM - Mike Z: those are the BEST setups
3:48 AM - gllt: Yeah I noticed you're a fan of those. I think I know of some with Val
3:48 AM - gllt: I'll pay attention to where those points are
3:49 AM - Mike Z: alrighty
3:49 AM - Mike Z: ggs
3:49 AM - Mike Z: thank you for playing me
3:49 AM - gllt: ggs, thanks for playing!
3:49 AM - gllt: https://steamcommunity-a.akamaihd.net/economy/emoticon/root https://steamcommunity-a.akamaihd.net/economy/emoticon/terminal
3:49 AM - gllt: you should consider investing in terrible steam emotes
3:49 AM - gllt: and sleeping tight
3:49 AM - Mike Z: I'll consider one of those things

I'll come back and make a concise list of points rather than relying on the chat log. Right now I need a break!
