Let's give this thread a try. There's gotta be some more Bionicle fans on here right? ......right? (I do know of at least two others.)

So, who's hyped for the reboot?

I would have started with a general LEGO thread just to see who bites, but ok.

Definitely hyped, and if I meet a certain person again, I'd like to give him one of the sets as a gift.

Once that Skull Spider body mask thingy is available on LDD, I'll see if I can make the Skullheart out of it with some flame pieces.

Bionicle was a big part of my childhood, so I was rather hype hearing about the reboot.

But then they released all the details, and now I'm anti-hype. Maybe the new direction will work out for the franchise, but I don't see it being the same Bionicle from the past.

Well, it is a reboot, so that's the point.

Wait, it's a reboot?
That's perfect.
I actually stopped collecting the majority of Bionicles after the Bohrok and Toa Nuva.
After that I head it got fucking extremely confusing.

I kept it straight, but I am not so big on the new Designs, especially with renaming the Masks. Really Turning Kopaka's Mask of X-Ray Vision into the Mask of Ice makes no sense with keeping a lot of the old design.

I'll wait before making any final judgement but...eh.

Fortunately, I have a friend who condensed a decade's worth of storyline in less than 2 minutes:

Well, in the original franchise, masks can be made with eyepieces on them regardless of mask power, like the Toa Metru Nuju's mask.

Course I don't expect it to follow the old version to a tee. That's ridiculous. My concern stems from the fact that it looks like they're stripping out all the elements that made Bionicle resonate with me, such as the simplifying of masks.

You think it got confusing after that, you won't believe how confusing it got in 2009. They basically revealed that the entire universe that they were in before was actually inside a robot.

Let's just say that rebooting the story is probably for the best.

I really hate the new designs but I guess the story reboot is ok.

Wish they had finished up the serials from BionicleStory though.

I don't remember when I read this, but Bob Thompson (original creative director) had stated the whole giant robot thing was planned from the beginning - you even see the symbol representing the robot in a few places during the Mata Nui Online Game from 2001.

I do think the story got really weak after 2004, but I feel like the last couple of comics did the best they could considering the circumstances.

Considering the circumstances, absolutely. It was still unfairly rushed out the door. If they had just given it to the end of 2010, and possibly actually made a figure line as well rather than the lazy, no-budget Bionicle Stars, it would have been a much stronger ending in my opinion.

I actually like the years after 2004. I feel like the "flashback" years fleshed out the lore of the story the most, not to mention bringing us very cool figures.

I didn't like the set designs too much...I think the Toa from 2005-2009 kinda sucked.

I remember a story treatment Greg Farshety wrote for a possible sequel to The Legend Reborn since it was originally intended to be a new trilogy of movies, seemed like it could have been really interesting and made it clear the story direction was meant to be quite different.

Well, the targeted demographic is young male kids and pre-teens. Needing to remember mask power, elemental power, weapons, personality, name, etc. seems like a lot.

Can confirm. The whole giant robot thing was initially planned. You can actually see more clues hinting to it than just the Mata Nui online game.
The reason the story got so week after about 2004 is because Bionicle was the victim of its own success. Lego wanted to milk the franchise for all it's worth, so a bunch of plot threads had to be made to keep the story going longer than it was initially supposed to.

Didn't stop kids like me from memorizing the shit out of that stuff back in the day. Also, the only thing that needed any sort of memorization was the masks, and maybe some names of locations, the wildlife and stuff. The characters and elements are designed so that there is no need for a cognitive load. I mean how hard is it to remember that the red guy with the flame sword is the champion of fire?
Plus, it wasn't like you had to remember everything. It was just a nice bonus that really helped out with the world-building.

I recall from Faber Files, one piece of concept art had a location called "Three Finger Island", but was obviously scrapped because it would have given everything away.

Anyways, I guess you're right, I'm probably thinking too much on the complexity on my part and underestimating the devotion of kids (I'm feeling old). I've been cataloging every single character, creature, object, location, event, etc. for so long that it's probably affected my standards.

But red guy with the flame sword? Are we talking about Tahu, Jaller, or Ackar?

A big one that no one noticed for the longest time was the initial Logo or something to that effect. The one where you have half the island and half the infected mask spliced together.

As for the red guy with the flame sword, Jaller never had a flame sword. He had a strobelight and a regular bland sword.
Also Tahu kind of lost that flame sword in his Phantoka iteration, and Ackar was released half a decade after said iconic flame sword stopped being used. I don't think there was a problem with kids getting the two confused.

I think there's also the meaning of the word "mata", which literally means "face".

Well, just being technical since Jaller Inika's sword was called "Energized Flame Sword" and Ackar's sword is literally called "Flame Sword". Guess I'm too much of a stickler for terminology.

And the mountain that meant nose. Though I don't remember the actual name.

But yeah, all the terminology has rotted away in my head so I couldn't really name the weapons anymore. But my point was more on the aesthetics of the weapon. Can't get the fire mold confused with the strobe light. Even then, if you were the type to memorize the weapon names, chances are you were OCD enough to know who had what at any given moment no matter how similar they were.

You just blew my mind. I still happen to own the enormous Mata Nui board game, and when you assemble all the pieces and form the entire map, it shows the mask faintly beneath the island.

I bet they probably intended to reveal the secret a long time before they did, but when Lego told them of Bionicle's cancellation, things had to really be rushed in 2008-10 to wrap up and reveal that part of the story. It's a shame they didn't have more time to leave a satisfying ending.

I discovered a interesting mod for Skyrim in develoment: http://www.moddb.com/mods/legend-of-the-toa http://tesbionicleproject.blogspot.ru/

Now only available toa race mod, but they will have a total mod conversion (Full Mata-nui Island + rahi + all villain of mata-nui) so ¿New good "fan-game"?.

P.S: More test videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/LegendOfTheToa/videos
I remember posting about this on 4chan, and from what I heard, the creator of the mod had some issues with some people that pretty much put the whole thing in limbo.

Speaking of which, I recall this video:

And the mountain that meant nose. Though I don't remember the actual name.

Ihu. To think that was the name of a Matoran makes me think he was a nosy guy or something (but probably not). I guess my OCD is showing.

Yeah I saw that mod and I didn't look too deep into it, but from what I can tell it appears to be vaporware at this point. Too bad, that would have been a good reason to finally buy Skyrim.

Real talk: Will there be good console/PC game tie-ins? The 2001 game (Legend of Mata Nui) got canned, the 2003 game ("The Game") was obviously incomplete, and the 2006 game (Heroes) was total autopilot and pretty bad in general.

The 2001 GBA game (Tales of the Tohunga) was good, the 2002 GBA game (Matoran Adventures) was ok but flawed (one sprite took up the entire screen), the 2003 GBA version of the console games was goddamn impossible, Maze of Shadows was ok, and the GBA/DS versions of Heroes were miles better than the console versions.

Maybe Mata nui Online? is a click and point game, but is very ok game: http://biomediaproject.com/bmp/games/

P.S:Legend of Mata Nui, What is this game?
